YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN PARENT AMBASSADORS UPDATE

Yorkville Christian School Parent Ambassadors are a group of parents who have hearts to serve the school, teachers and staff with their time, resources and/or talents, and engage others by telling their family’s personal journey at YCHS to help grow enrollment. This vital group knows the importance of parent involvement at YCHS by lending an extra set of hands to our dedicated staff who give abundantly of their own time, funds and other resources.

Parent Ambassadors compliment the mission of Yorkville Christian School – Energize, Educate and Impact the World!

Although our Parent Ambassador calendar has not been terribly full since October, we ARE beginning to ramp up for the summer and fall activities. If you would like to join us at our upcoming meeting (Tuesday, May 2 at BOTH 3pm and 6pm), we would love to have you.

Current items on the agenda include:

• help in passing out or hanging flyers at local businesses in each family’s area to promote our new middle school for next year – YCHS will be adding 7th and 8th grades to the 2023-24 school year

• engage families within your sphere of influence to promote YCHS and receive at $250 referral

discount when the families you’ve contacted register their students

• continue to share YCHS and YCHS Athletics on your social media

Upcoming dates:

• canvas your local businesses for gift cards and/or donations for our Trivia Night – to be done all

summer long with final donations to be turned in on September 15

• assistance with VBS (Vacation Bible School) – June 19-23 from 9am to 12pm

• walkers to represent YCHS in the July 4th parade in Yorkville – passing out handouts and small

items for the little children

• volunteers to work the tent handing our flyers at Yorkville Hometown Days – specifically Saturday, September 2

• grab a group of friends from work or church and register at our 3rd Annual Trivia Night – September 23, 6-9pm

• volunteers needed to work our 2nd Annual Grandparents Day – October 12

• host a trunk at our 2nd Annual Trunk-or-Treat (invite others from church groups, athletic clubs,

businesses too) – October 21, 1-4pm

• spread the word about our Open House – October 22, 1-4pm

To be a part of this servant group, aside from attending just a few meetings per year, parents are asked to participate in at least two of these:

• help promote the school in person, through flyers and social media, but most importantly,

personal invitation (*all Parent Ambassadors are asked to help with this)

• volunteer time or resources at various events throughout the year

• help acquire gift cards or prizes for certain events

Again, parents aren’t asked to do it all, just to be aware of what’s in your toolbox and help in those ways.

Please contact Mrs. Janine McDavitt (Parent Ambassador Coordinator) by emailing her at

janinemcdavitt@yorkvillechristian.com to sign up to receive Parent Ambassador communications or assist with any of these events.

Yorkville Christian FFA Banquet

On April 18th, 2023 the Yorkville Christian FFA had its annual FFA Banquet. The Yorkville Christian FFA put on a silent auction that brought in money to be able to send three kids to represent our chapter at the Illinois FFA Leadership Camp in July. Students interested in attending FFA Camp went through an application process. Halana Cejka, Mikayla Highland, & Emma Schleining will be attending this summer’s camp! Yorkville Christian FFA members received their Greenhand degrees. Yorkville Christian FFA rewarded the students in each grade level who participated the most this year. The Yorkville Christian FFA ended with recognizing the senior FFA members. These students were Audrey Breen, Kennedy Cargola, Cole Wheeler, Brant Tunnell, Chance Ness, & Jeremy Loomis. CLASSROOM CORNER

Physical Science

Students in Physical Science class, under the direction of Mr. Fred Versluys, recently discovered trends in chemical reactions in Physical Science using micropipet techniques.

Intro to Agriculture

Students in Introduction to Agriculture made container gardens in celebration of Easter as part of their unit on garden planning.  Recycled materials and individual creativity were used to design and create the “empty tomb” and the “stone rolled away” representing HOPE!  Students are making plans for large container gardens full of perennial herbs and pollinator habitats to be planted on our campus in the coming weeks.  Another great hands-on project in Intro to Ag under the direction of Mrs. Stewart!

English I

English 1 students, led by English teacher, Ms. Taglia, recently read the Odyssey in groups.  The class switched between the epic and the graphic novel to deepen understanding of the content and become familiar with multiple styles of writing.

Toy and Game Design

On Wednesday, April 12, Mr. McDavitt’s Toy and Game Design class ventured out on a field trip to Stern Pinball in Elk Grove Village, the largest pinball manufacturer in the world.  The Yorkville Christian students were met by Mr. Ernst, who showed the students around the pinball factory and explained all the various assembly line stations of a pinball machine, including how the board for the machine is pressed; how the bumpers are installed; and how the larger toys in a pinball machine work.  Another part of the tour included showing our students how the mother board in the pinball machines have changed over the years.  Our students were also able to visit the warehouse and packing and shipping areas in the factory to see how that part of the operation worked.  Finally, the students had the opportunity to visit “Pinball Alley” and play some of their favorite pinball machines.  The trip was an amazing opportunity for our students to get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of toy design in the real world.  Thank you to Mr. McDavitt for organizing the field trip, and Mrs. Bulson for chaperoning the trip.

Geometry

Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry classes recently participated in a “shape walk” to discover all the 2D shapes the students had been studying in their recent unit.  Students walked around the outside of the campus and identified several shapes in various real-life settings.  It was a great way to recognize mathematics all around us in God’s creation.

Biology

Biology students, in Mrs. Schnyder’s class, recently participated in a “Survivor Science” game with challenge questions on the Excretory System.  The students played a series of “Survivor” review games to support their learning of each of the body systems.  Each student even received a “Survivor Buff,” and the class was broken up into teams.  The students had a great time with the games, and it was an excellent form of review for the students.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

The Introduction to Drawing and Painting class, under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt, recently started the painting portion of the course.  The students started by working on color mixing and painting shapes.

Animal Science

Animal Science students, under the direction of Mrs. Wiesbrook, recently completed a study of the Poultry Industry, covering topics such as chick embryology, feeding and managing chicks, and studying chicken production.  During this unit, students incubated chicken eggs!  Fertilized eggs take about 21 days to hatch.  Students noticed signs of hatching on day 20, and day 21 the hatching took place.

Sports Management

The Sports Management class, taught by Mr. Sovern, recently completed a project where students had to pick a sports facility, and research several different aspects of the facility.  The students could pick any sports facility in the United States, and had to provide information including the type of facility (single or multipurpose); crowd management; security; personnel; and a yearly or monthly calendar of usage.  After compiling all their research, each student gave a presentation to the class.  The students did an excellent job with the research and class presentations!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN TO OFFER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FALL OF 2023

After years of prayer and discussion, the Yorkville Christian School Board in December approved the start of a 7th and 8th grade middle school at Yorkville Christian.  The middle school will start in the Fall of 2023.  The 7th grade class will be capped at 25 students, and the 8th grade class will be capped at 25 students.   Yorkville Christian Middle School will offer sports — girls volleyball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, soccer, and track for now.  The tuition will be $8500 a year per student, and because of the limited enrollment spots, we will not be offering tuition assistance for the middle school; however, there will be a multiple student discount of $2000, if a family has two students in the middle school or a student in the middle school and another in the high school.  The middle school students will be offered a full variety of classes including electives, and will have a special wing of the building, but will be switching classes, participating in chapel, and eating lunch in the school cafeteria, and participating in PE classes in our Canyon gymnasium. We will have a special staff of teachers we will be hiring to teach the middle school students.

Here are the two steps to enroll:

1)  Complete the enrollment application which can be done using this link:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/enrollment/

2)  Families will need to make a $600 tuition down payment, which will be subtracted from the overall tuition cost of $8500 (or $8250 with the early discount).  The payment can be made securely using this link or a check can be dropped off at the school office (checks payable to Yorkville Christian High School).  Here is the link for tuition down payment:

PLEASE share this exciting news and information with any families you know who might be interested, as we are definitely capping each class at 25 total students, so spots will fill up quickly.
