MEET OUR NEW MUSTANG STAFF MEMBERS

Mr. Jordan Maroney

English Teacher

Hello! I am Jordan Maroney, and I am very excited to teach at YCS. I was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, where I attended Columbia International University for a few years before moving to the area with my wife. I recently graduated from Aurora University with a degree in Secondary Education. I have discovered a passion for educating, teaching, and mentoring young people through God’s guidance and opening my heart.

When I am not teaching, I love to engage in my hobbies and interests, which include college football, playing sports, and spending time with my family. I enjoy attending games, cheering on my favorite teams (University of South Carolina)) and staying active. Spending time with my family is also very important to me, and I treasure every moment I get to spend with my wife and precious baby girl.

I am humbled by how the Lord has led my life up to this point and how he has blessed me in various ways. I am so thankful for the opportunity to share his grace and love with the students I encounter daily.

MISSION ADVANCEMENT

Calendar Flips to December

December brings a variety of emotions from happy to frustration and everything in between to all age

groups. Further, before the month ends, many last-minute decisions are made and last minute gifts

purchased.

Personally, for our family, December translates to family and friend gatherings, awesome worship

services, donations to our favorite non-profit organizations, Christmas music/carols, and …. the dreaded

last minute planning, rushing, and shopping.

Last Minute Decisions

Our family has the opportunity to take time to review the mission of the non-profits that we support to

insure each is staying true to its mission as well as to its Christian commitment. After the review, we

prayerfully make the decision as to where our support will be given for the year. Obviously, Yorkville

Christian remains at the top of our donation list. Why?

Simply, Yorkville Christian is faithful to its mission of energizing, educating, and impacting students’

lives to make a difference in God’s world. It is a mission that is so important in our current world’s

climate. Therefore, as your family makes those last-minute decisions of what non-profits should be

supported, I encourage you to support Yorkville Christian Annual Fund.

How can you support? A check mailed to or dropped off at Yorkville Christian is one way. A second way

is to visit our website at yorkvillechristian.com, click on donate and follow the directions. Remember a

gift of any size is appreciated.

Last Minute Gifts

Last minute gifts are where I welcome any and all suggestions as I scramble to the “deadline.”

Therefore, I offer the following for you to consider as you debate, struggle, and rush for that last minute

gift.

As part of Yorkville Christian’s 10th anniversary celebration, a “Legacy Brick” program is being offered…

bricks will be installed at the main entrance and remain year after year.

Consider a gift of a legacy brick in honor of your family, your student, a friend, or your grandchild. For

more information, visit our website at https://yorkvillechristian.com/donation/ and complete the form.

Or, feel free to contact Janine McDavitt at 630-200-1305 or janinemcdavitt@yorkvillechristian.com.

In our busy lives, taking a few minutes for last minute decision and last-minute gifts, provides a quiet

time to focus on the true meaning of Christmas without being engulfed in the world’s view of Christmas.

Peace and Blessings,

Connie Brott

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS FINE ARTS SHADOW DAY

On Thursday, December 7, Yorkville Christian hosted a Fine Arts Shadow Day.  Shadow guests were treated to a very exciting day.  The day started with the shadows attending a drawing session led by Yorkville Christian art teacher, Mr. John McDavitt.  The shadow guests learned about shading and light and drew some cartoon characters to practice these concepts.  The shadows attended a regular class with their hosts, and then they were treated to a special music lesson under the direction of Mrs. Christy Motley, Yorkville Christian’s music teacher.  The shadow guests learned how to play the hand bells as well as the keyboard.  Shadow students attended chapel and were treated to a catered lunch, where they were able to have a question-and-answer session with the Yorkville Christian fine arts teachers.  Students also were able to learn about all the fine arts classes and clubs that are offered at Yorkville Christian.

Following lunch, shadow guests attended two more art classes – a Drawing and Painting Class with Mr. McDavitt, as well as an Adobe class, where they were able to use the new computers in the computer lab.  Another highlight of the afternoon was attending Mr. Vester’s class where students participated in a podcast.  Each shadow guest in attendance received a “goodie bag” and were able to ask questions of our Director of Enrollment, Mr. Tim Schnyders, regarding Yorkville Christian.  It was a great day, and we are so thankful these students and families were led by the Lord to visit Yorkville Christian and learn more about our school.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS AGRICULTURE SHADOW DAY

Yorkville Christian High School hosted an Ag Shadow Day on Thursday, December 14.  The day consisted of several different exciting activities for the shadow guests.  The shadow guests visited an “Intro to Agriculture” class; an “Animal Science” class; and a “Food Science” class.  Mrs. Wiesbrook and Mrs. Stewart, the Yorkville Christian Agriculture teachers presented a variety of lesson activities including everything from “How to Make Ice Cream” to “Christmas Ag Facts.”  The shadow guests had a great time with these activities.  Shadows also had the opportunity to attend some regular classes with their hosts, as well as our weekly chapel.  Another highlight of the day was a catered lunch, where shadow guests listened to presentations by FFA officers, as well as members of the Rodeo Club.  There was also a question-and-answer session with the agriculture teachers.  Each shadow guest also received a “goodie bag.”

We thank all of the shadow guests who joined us for the day, and a special thanks to Mrs. Wiesbrook and Mrs. Stewart for all of their efforts in planning the day’s activities.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Toy and Game Design

Toy and Game Design students recently completed a “Team Happy Meal” project.  Each team picked a license and designed a line of Happy Meal toys, created a visual presentation to communicate their toys’ features and prepared their oral presentations to “pitch” their concepts to the client.  Mr. John McDavitt, the Toy and Game Design class instructor, was very happy with the final products and presentations.

Food Science

Students in Mrs. Wiesbrook’s Food Science class recently created “Pumpkin Pie in a Bag” in
class. Students created their own miniature pumpkin pie in a bag and then transferred their mixture to a
cup and added homemade whip cream to top off the dessert. The final products were delicious!

Biology

Biology students, under the direction of Mrs. Laura Schnyders, completed a “Gummy Bear Bonds
Lab” as part of their “Chemistry in Biology” unit. Students gained an understanding of atoms, elements,
molecules, and compounds as well as the types of bonds that can form between atoms.

Drawing and Painting/ Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop/Toy and Game Design

Designer and Business Owner, Emilie Procsal, of Scarlet Cardinal Studios, visited Yorkville Christian to speak about her career to our
three visual arts classes. Emilie is a fine arts major who transitioned to product development (Wilton Ind,
Itzy Ritzy) and now provides photography and video solutions to the real estate industry. Emilie shared
valuable first-hand experiences with each class about her journey from student to professional to business
owner. It was a privilege to have her speak to our students!

Biology

Biology students in Mrs. Schnyder’s class completed a Frixion Lab as part of their “Chemistry in
Biology” unit.  Students used hair dryers as a heat source to cause a chemical reaction in the Frixion ink.
The heat broke bonds that allow it to be visible – causing it to disappear!  Students then used keyboard
spray as a cold source to cause the components in the Frixion ink to bond again – and the ink reappeared.
Understanding chemical reactions and the making and breaking of bonds will prepare students to
understand the biological processes they will be studying in our next unit:  The cell.

Honors Geometry

Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Honors Geometry class worked on a partner project for their
unit. This extension project involved creating similar triangles and comparing their relationships of
corresponding sides and congruent angles. Students tested the angle at which they must roll a basketball
into the wall in order to create the correct angle to knock over a paper cup. They recorded their findings
and presented their data for their final project.

Drawing and Painting

Drawing and Painting students completed their Grid Drawing Projects. This project
incorporated all the skills the students learned during the semester including values (lights and darks), line,
form, and accuracy. The students did an amazing job!

Media Writing and Production

Students in Mr. Vester’s Media Writing and Production class recently
completed ten-minute newscasts covering six different beats – sports, weather, entertainment, food, crime,
and miscellaneous. The students did a great job putting the podcasts together. It was a great learning
experience for the students.

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

GIRLS BASKETBALL BEGINS THE 2023-24 SEASON

The Yorkville Christian varsity girls’ basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 season the week of November 13-18 with a Thanksgiving tournament at Wheaton Academy.  The girls faced three much larger schools, and even though they did not come out with a win, they battled throughout the tournament.  Coach Schutt believes playing the opening games against much bigger schools will be a great help to the girls down the road, as they get into tournament time.

WRESTLING STARTS THE NEW SEASON WITH STYLE

On Tuesday, November 21, the Yorkville Christian wrestling team started their season with a home meet against Oakwood (Fithian) and Woodstock.  The Mustangs lost the match with Oakwood by a score of 45-28, but defeated Woodstock by a score of 54-18.  The following day, the Mustangs traveled to Batavia to battle Batavia and Morton (Berwyn Cicero).  The Mustangs won both matches defeating Batavia by a score of 46-24, and Morton by a score of 72-12.  The team was led by Aiden Larsen, Ty Edwards, Robby Nelson, and Tyler Gleason, who all went 4-0 in their matches.  Ryan Alaimo, Tristan Gleason and Jackson Allen all went 3-1 to contribute to the wins.

The JV wrestlers also did a great job with Daniel Nelson going 5-0; Jackson Witt going 4-1; Henry Fox going 4-1; and Kenny Fox and Eddie Poe also competed well for the team.  Great job, Mustangs!  The varsity team wrestled at the DeRousse Individual tourney on November 25, and the JV team wrestled at the Rockford East Invitational on November 24.  The varsity placed 5th out of 24 teams at the Ted DeRousse tourney in Antioch.  Individual medalists were Aiden Larsen and Ty Edwards, both champions at their weights.  Robby Nelson took 2nd place.  Garrett Tunnel placed 5th, and Hayden Wheeler placed 6th.  All Mustang wrestlers had at least one win and several had multiple wins.  Other competitors for the Mustangs included Eli Foster, Tristan Gleason, Xander Oliver, Ty Lombardo, Isaac Gray, Tyler Gleason, and Jackson Allen.

BOYS BASKETBALL WINS THEIR HOME OPENER

The boys’ basketball program played their home opener on Tuesday, November 28, against Universal.  The varsity won by a score of 78-48.  The team was led by Jayden Riley’s 29 points and Zach Marini’s 25.  The JV team also defeated Universal in what was their first game of the year.  The JV team was led with balanced scoring from Graham Razum, Austin Vugteveen, and Joey Benig.  Great job, Mustangs!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN SOCCER PLAYER EARNS AWARD

WRESTLING TEAM CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling team had a home meet on Friday, December 1, against Peotone High School and Ottawa Marquette.  The Mustangs were very dominant throughout defeating Peotone by a score of 66-12, and defeating Ottawa Marquette by a score of 50-14. Aiden Larsen moved his overall record to 10-0 on the season, while Ty Edwards improved to 11-0.  Robby Nelson moved his overall record to 8-1, and Garrett Tunnell notched his 9th win against only two losses.  It was a great team effort for the Mustangs and Coach Vester!  Great job.

BOYS BASKETBALL NOTCHES ANOTHER WIN AT HOME

The Yorkville Christian basketball program hosted Lombard College Prep on Saturday, December 2.  The JV started the night off right with a win against the visitors.  The varsity team had little trouble defeating the guests, winning by a score of 98-68.  The Mustangs had five players in double digits including Jayden Riley, Trey Alford, Jordan Purvis, Noah Aguado, and Zach Marini.  Brady Sovern contributed another near triple double with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists to help the Mustangs.  Great job, team!

BOYS BASKETBALL HITS THE CENTURY MARK AGAINST IFS

On Tuesday, December 5, the Yorkville Christian Mustangs hosted IFS for a basketball matchup.  The JV and varsity teams had a very successful night, as both teams recorded decisive wins over IFS.  The varsity won by a score of 100-24.  The varsity team was led by Jordan Purvis with 21 points and 6 rebounds.  Brady Sovern shot lights out going 5-6 from the three-point line and finishing with 20 points.  Jayden Riley distributed 12 assists, and Zach Marini added 18 points to the winning effort.  Trey Alford (14 points and 7 assists), and Sam Painter (13 points) also contributed to the win.  Great job, Mustangs!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN SERVES AT OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

On Wednesday, December 6, the entire student body and staff of Yorkville Christian School served at Operation Christmas Child.  The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world.  The organization fills shoeboxes with gifts for children around the world.  Since 1993, more than 209 million children in more than 170 countries have received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox filled with toys, school supplies, and hygiene items.  It was a great reminder to our students and staff during this Christmas season of the importance of being the hands and feet of Jesus in the world today.

Our seventh graders did not meet the minimum age requirement for Operation Christmas Child, so they spent the day doing various projects around Yorkville Christian.  They accomplished a great deal, and we are very appreciative of their efforts!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS’ BASKETBALL WINS TOURNAMENT

On Saturday, December 9, the Yorkville Christian Middle School boys’ basketball team participated in the
Wheaton Academy Shootout. The team started out strong with a 50-35 victory over the LAC Clippers.
The second game of the shootout was a battle with the Lincoln-Way Wildcats, a team out of the New
Lenox area. The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats by a score of 59-44 to secure the Shootout
Championship. All 12 players on the Yorkville Christian team played and contributed to the
championship. The team MVP was Giovanni Sanderlin, who scored 29 points, hauled in 11 rebounds,
dished out four assists, and had six steals and two blocks in the two games. Isaac Echols contributed 30
points on the day, including six three pointers. Jayden Alford added 20 points and also made four three
pointers on the day. Sean Drynan contributed 12 points and 16 rebounds in the two victories.
The two victories on the day pushed the team’s record to an overall mark of 7-3 on the season. Great

Our November  School Newsletter

MEET OUR NEW MUSTANG STAFF MEMBERS!

Mrs. Sherry Wolfe

Middle School Teacher

I received my degree from Wheaton College with a major in Elementary Education and endorsements in Language Arts and Social Studies.  Part of my schooling was done at Central Bible College where I took several Bible classes.  I started teaching at Calvary Christian School in 1991 as the fifth-grade teacher.  After a year and a half, I had a new role of first-time mother.  I stepped away from classroom teaching for about a decade.  I returned to teaching part-time again at Calvary Christian School this time helping in P.E.  After a few years, I helped with individual math, 6th grade reading, resource teacher, and librarian.  Right before the pandemic, I was substituting in Oswego. Then, we moved to Kentucky for two and a half years.  The Lord led me to Yorkville Christian this past summer to join the team in the Jr. High teaching language arts and Bible.

I grew up in a Christian home, and have desired to be a teacher since the third grade.  I have been interested in teaching upper elementary and middle school since college.  I volunteered at church in the Jr. High group and have loved being in relationship with kids these ages.  My husband, Todd, and I married in 1990.  We have six children ages 30-13 and two granddaughters ages four and two.  Most of my kids have been involved in basketball like their dad.  Basketball has been a great way to learn not only the sport, but character developing qualities.  My passions are supporting my kids, reading, making cards, and knitting.  I hope to learn golf in the future.

I have already been so blessed to be a part of Yorkville Christian.  I have been so welcomed into this family and have enjoyed getting to know more of the families the more time I have spent here.  I am excited to see how students use what they learn to grow and impact those the Lord puts in their paths.  I am excited to come alongside families to encourage and bless them while I myself am also blessed.

MISSION ADVANCEMENT

I Am Watching You

Our Pastor recently had a sermon with this title. He proceeded to share the history of a country

song with the title, “I Am Watching You,” by Rodney Atkins. Simply, when Rodney and his 4-year old son were in a near car accident, his son’s response was a four letter word. Rodney asked his son where he had learned that word. His son replied, “I’ve been watching you; ain’t that cool.” Yes, we can grin, but…………As parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, we need at all times to be cognizant of who is “learning” from us. This holiday season as family gathers, it just might be a great time to have your children/grandchildren share what each as learned by “watching you.” Mostly, I would believe they have gleaned great manners, respect, ethics, fun, love, etc., from your words and actions. And, should they share a “negative” learning, it is a great time to correct that wrong.

Without sitting at your family gatherings, I can confidently say you are presenting a character and spiritual building venue for your family as you entrust your students to Yorkville Christian School to be educated, energized, and empowered to impact God’s world. Priorities are seen that education and spiritual growth are important. We certainly can attest to that given our current world’s “standards.”

As the yearend approaches, you have an additional time for your family to say, “I’ve been watching you” as you support the school with not only your time and talents, but also with your treasures. Our annual fund has a goal of $250,000; any dollar amount donation is appreciated.

However, if every family, grandparent, and friend gave $100, our goal would be easily reached.

Annual fund is used to help provide tuition assistance as well as provide ongoing building updates.

Yorkville Christian School Board, Administration, and staff are energized each day as they have the opportunity to “light the fire” in your students’ lives. So, thank you for sharing your students with us…we are family.

Thank you for your gifts; thank you for your prayers.

Blessed Holiday Season.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN CELEBRATES HOMECOMING WEEK

Yorkville Christian High School and Middle School celebrated Homecoming Week the week of November 6-11.  The week consisted of several different exciting activities for students and staff.  Here is a breakdown of each of the days and the events during the week.

Monday, November 6

Monday was “Class Colors Day.” Each class was assigned a class color, and prizes were awarded for the class who participated by wearing the most class colors.  The colors for each class were as follows:

7th Grade – Orange

8th Grade – Black

9th Grade – White

10th Grade – Green

11th Grade – Pink

12th Grade — Blue

There was excellent participation from all classes.

Monday also consisted of hallway decorations.  Each class was assigned a section of the school hallways to decorate with the Homecoming theme “Enchanted.”  Each class used their own supplies to decorate the hallways.  The students did a great job!

The highlight of the week was all the students participating in a special ministry called Operation Christmas Child.  Throughout the Homecoming Week, students were asked to bring shoeboxes filled with various toys and gifts for underprivileged youth around the world.  It was so great to be able to tie a special cause like this into Homecoming Week!

Tuesday, November 7

Tuesday was “Bring Anything But A Backpack Day!”  Students showed some incredible creativity with this day!

Tuesday’s afternoon competition was “Hungry Hippo.”  The students really enjoyed this challenge!

Wednesday, November 8

8th graders – 80’s

9th graders – 50’s

10th graders – 60’s

11th graders – 70’s

The Thursday afternoon challenge was a Powder Puff football game.   The freshmen and Juniors played against the sophomores and seniors.  It was an exciting game that went right down to the wire, but the freshmen and junior team pulled it out 7-0!

Friday, November 10

Friday was School Colors Day and the last day of competitions between the classes.  The participation for School Colors was amazing, and the competition for the day was a Faculty/Student volleyball game.  It was a hard-fought contest with the faculty winning game one, and the students winning the second game.

After a week of competition, the senior class was the inaugural winner of the “Spirit Cup!”  Congratulations seniors!

The Homecoming Week concluded with a Homecoming Dance on Saturday, November 11.  Over 100 students attended the dance, and the night was a huge success.  Thank you to all the staff members and volunteers who made the Homecoming Week such a memorable experience.

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL TRUNK-OR-TREAT EVENT

On Saturday, October 21, Yorkville Christian hosted the 2nd Annual Trunk-or-Treat event at the school.  The weather was just beautiful, and the people came out in masses to enjoy the festivities.  Somewhere between 2,500-3,000 people attended the event, which featured a large petting zoo; a pumpkin patch; a touch-a-truck area; food trucks, great giveaways including free custard from Culvers of Yorkville, and so much more.  It was so great to see such a great crowd attend this wonderful community event.  Thank you to all those who supported the event by hosting a trunk.  We had just under 130 trunks attend the event.  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the day possible, and special thanks to Mrs. Michelle Stewart and Mrs. Blair Wiesbrook and the Yorkville Christian FFA for all of their efforts with the petting zoo and pumpkin patch.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL TEAM COMPLETES SEASON

On Thursday, October 27, the Yorkville Christian middle school volleyball team completed its season with a home match against Bethany Lutheran School.  The season ended with a victory in the final set for the Mustangs.  The season was a great experience for the girls, as many of them never played organized volleyball before, so there was a great deal of growth and improvement.  Thank you so Mrs. Jenni Creek for coaching the girls throughout the season.  We look forward to seeing these girls continue to compete for Yorkville Christian in the years to come.  Great job, ladies!

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS SERVE AT FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

On Tuesday, October 31, the Yorkville Christian middle school students served at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora.  Students spend the day working in teams to pack food items in boxes for hungry children around the world.  Our middle school students spent the morning at Feed My Starving Children and during that time, they packed 83 boxes and 17, 928 meals.  In order to thank the students for their hard work, the group stopped at Portillo’s for lunch on the way back to school.  Great job, Mustangs!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN WRESTLER SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT

Congratulations to Yorkville Christian senior wrestler, Ty Edwards, for signing his letter of intent on Wednesday, November 8, to continue his academic and athletic career at Gardner-Webb University next year. Ty marks the ninth Yorkville Christian wrestler under Coach Mike Vester to wrestle at the college level. Congratulations Ty! May God continue to bless Ty’s path!

CLASSROOM CORNER

Geometry – Geometry students recently used their knowledge of transversals, angle relationships, and parallel lines to create their own GEOTOWN.  This project was completed in Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry class.  Great job everyone!

Health – To complete their study of the circulatory system, Health students dissect pig hearts to improve their understanding of blood flow into and out of the heart.  Students identified the four chambers, valves, arteries, veins, and other structures necessary for heart function.

Biology – Biology students collaborate to come up with solutions to real-life dilemmas in maintaining biodiversity in Yellowstone National Park.  Students have learned how important biodiversity is to the health of our ecosystems and are also aware of the constant struggle between preserving and using our resources.  The pros and cons to possible solutions concerning wildland fires, lake trout, and wolf recovery were analyzed and shared.

Here is an update from some of the exciting things taking place in Mr. Vester’s classes.

LIFE SKILLS

We recently did a hands-on unit in Auto Maintenance and Emergency Planning…how to change a tire, detect worn tire tread, bad brakes or steering, how and when to check fluids, etc… We worked through a unit on meal planning and shopping for the best prices on a budget in order to “Feed Yourself for a Week.” Students were blown away how much things cost and quickly grew a newfound appreciation for always being able to go to the cupboard or refrigerator at home to find food there for them. We are now embarking on another area of personal finance…specifically investment planning. Here they will learn about stocks, mutual funds, Roth IRA, 401K, tax-favored programs, and much more while doing a hands-on practicum in Investopedia.com investments where they have to research, purchase, and track stocks they find to be “sound investments.”

INTRO TO BUSINESS

This dual credit college course has really tested the students and they have answered back with creativity and clear thinking. Students have worked to create their own business concepts, wrote a lengthy business plan, created organizational structure addendums, quality and satisfaction surveys for internal and external customers, and are about to embark on the elements of human resource and personnel management that will include all elements of staffing, employee development, communication, conflict resolution, and navigating virtual employment and cultural differences across the globe.

MEDIA WRITING and PRODUCTION

Having spent a majority of the first quarter of the semester learning the art of writing for news, writing copy for commercials, and researching and writing short scripts for podcasts or news programs, students have now started recording and editing the audio for their programs. They are now working on an 8–10-minute length podcast script where they will serve as host and will moderate the discussion of an issue they were assigned. Their classmates will become studio guests and will give their opinions throughout the show. The host will ensure they stay on task, ask questions, and will guide listeners to commercial breaks and program IDs. Each student will serve as writer and host of their podcast in this same format.

Government – Students in Mr. Bieterman’s Government class recently wrote letters to veterans to thank them for their service.  The students had a choice to write to a relative or family friend who was a veteran, or they could write to a local veteran, as Mr. Bieterman visited the local American Legion Post and shared the thank you notes with veterans at that location.  It was great to see our student thank the veterans for the freedoms they have fought and continue to defend on their behalf.

Our October School Newsletter

MEET OUR NEW MUSTANG STAFF MEMBERS!

Mr. Javier Garcia

Social Studies

Hello parents and students, my name is Javier Garcia and I have the privilege to be teaching at YCHS for the upcoming school year! I am native from Plainfield, Illinois and graduated from Eureka College with a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science. I enjoy going on runs and bike rides through forest preserves to be exposed to nature’s beauty. I am looking forward to taking on new leadership roles within the school to ensure students feel educated, happy, and safe while in school. As well as taking on roles within athletics and extracurricular activities. I am the head Soccer coach and one of the teacher sponsors of National Honors Society. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Mr. Sean Bieterman

Social Studies

Hi Mustang Families,

My name is Sean Bieterman, and I am very excited to be joining the Mustang family as a teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.  I am entering my 21st year in education and am thrilled to be working in a Christian school.  Before coming to Yorkville Christian, I previously worked at Driscoll Catholic, Lincoln-Way Central, and Aurora Central Catholic.  I served in various roles at these schools as a classroom instructor and school administrator.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am excited to be co-sponsoring the business club at Yorkville Christian.  18 months ago, I became the business owner of T’s Academy, a baseball/softball/strength and conditioning company in Lombard, IL.  I hope to share my business experiences with our students.  I am also entering my 2nd year as the head baseball coach at Yorkville Christian, as well as my 22nd year overall as a head baseball coach.  We are excited about continuing to develop this program and build it into the finest in the state of Illinois.

I live in Villa Park, IL with my wife Maggie, our son Casey and our dog Buddy.  My wife is in her 20th year as a first-grade teacher in Elmwood Park and Casey is now a sophomore here at Yorkville Christian. In our free time we do like to travel and spend time together as a family. We are looking forward to our new future together at Yorkville Christian and will continue to enjoy being part of God’s Plan.

Mr. Bieterman

MISSION ADVANCEMENT

And….What exactly is family?

This past spring, I attended a full week cooking class with 11 strangers. At the orientation on

Sunday evening, the owner of Tuscan Women Cook ended her presentation; tapped her head,

and said “when you see this, it indicates “family time, pay attention” Hmmm…….ok, family,

really? Well, by Monday evening and after cooking all day and sharing responsibilities, the 14

of us had actually become friendly enough to be a family. Who knew? Why do I share this?

As Board, staff, parents, grandparents, friends, and students, we are a member of the Yorkville

Christian “family.” It simply means that:

  • as administration and staff, we are caring for your students each and every day as they

walk through our doors

  • as parents, you are supporting our staff by volunteering with your time and attending

your student’s functions

  • as grandparents and friends, you are offering up your prayers on behalf of our students

and staff (and, of course, attending functions)

All of the above make us a vital part of the Yorkville Christian Mustang Community.

Another “family” visual often used by Christian schools is a three-legged stool….home, church,

and school. The three units are tightly knitted together through your students. Each unit

supports the other. Home (parents, grandparents, and friends) supports with time, talents, and

finances; church supports with prayers, participation in our chapels, and finances; school

supports by caring and praying for students as well as providing a Christian environment for

learning.

It is a time to be proud of being a “family” member at Yorkville Christian. As the world around

us, both near and far, exists in ongoing turmoil, be assured the Yorkville Christian “family” is a

safe environment which remains strong and secure in God’s love and mercy.

Happy and blessed fall.

T.R.I.P. – Tuition Reduction Incentive Program

Use RaiseRight.com to buy gift cards, in which a percentage of your purchase gets applied to your tuition account!
It costs nothing to join!

How It Works
Participating retailers sell gift cards (physical or digital) to RaiseRight.com, offering a percentage back to our non-profit which gets passed on to you!

You pay face value for the gift card. The hundreds of retailers decide on the percentage they give back, and MANY of them offer bonuses throughout the year.

You can buy physical gift cards, mailed right to your home, OR e-gift cards (digital) that you can use right from the app! Many retailers offer a reloading option on their physical gift cards.

The amount you earn from using RaiseRight is applied to your tuition account every two months. Even if you have a zero balance in your tuition account, you can keep earning for the following year, even through the summer months!

How Do I Get Started
On your computer, go to RaiseRight.com to get started, and click on the blue “Sign Up” button. Enter our enrollment code LAFE762772884, then click on “Join a Program”. Follow the prompts to create your account.
**Be sure to type in your child’s first AND last name in the “Who are you earning for?” section. Once your account is created, start exploring and make purchases!

To make your life easier, RaiseRight offers an app, found in both iOS and Android platforms. (Look for RaiseRight Fundraising app with a blue/red heart logo.) Once downloaded, log in to your account that you’ve already created and start shopping!

Both the app on your smartphone and your account on your computer offer a wallet option. Once your purchases are made, they’ll be placed in your wallet waiting to be used.

Review each retailer’s offerings carefully, as all options and offerings are not the same.

In the payment section during your first purchase, select from paying with a debit card, for a nominal fee, or with a credit card, for a bit larger fee. You’ll be asked if you want your payment form saved.
(Paying YCS directly and having it delivered to the school is not an option at this time.)

Parent Ambassador Program

Serving and Promoting Yorkville Christian School

Yorkville Christian School has a Parent Ambassador group which serves the school through various avenues of time, talents and resources.

What are Parent Ambassadors?

  • parents that help promote the school to prospective YCS families
  • parents that promote various YCS events throughout the year in their hometowns by word of mouth, through email, through flyers and/or by reposting events to personal social media pages
  • parents that volunteer their time or resources at YCS events
  • parents that canvass their local businesses requesting and collecting gift cards, merchandise, etc. for prizes to hand out during our popular Trivia Night and other events throughout the year
  • parents that attend a few Parent Ambassador meetings per year

To be a Parent Ambassador, you don’t have to do everything on the list above! If you are able to help with some things, that’s great. If you are able to help with many things, that’s awesome. If you can help with all of them, terrific! Just please consider how you can help.

Some examples of serving as a Parent Ambassador include, but are not limited to:

  • handing out flyers to your neighbors or church friends for Open House
  • collecting prizes for our upcoming events like Trivia Night
  • volunteering on Grandparent’s Day or the Trunk or Treat event
  • you, your family or a friend own a business and might be willing to donate or lend talents/trades to help with a project

Please simply consider what tools you have in your toolbox.

Parent involvement is a MUST at any school and this group is a vital part of YCS! There are many moving parts in making a successful school year, and Parents, you are one of those moving parts whether you donate items, talents or your time.

What a blessing it is that we can assist Mrs. Stewart, Mr. Sovern, Mr. Versluys, Mr. Schnyders and the rest of the YCS staff by helping to create an impactful and enjoyable school year, not just for the students but for the entire YCS family!

The Parent Ambassador group is led by Mrs. Janine McDavitt, a fellow parent since 2020, and can be reached at janinemcdavitt@yorkvillechristian.com

To be added the Parent Ambassador group or if you have questions, please contact Mrs. Janine McDavitt.

Yorkville Christian Hosts Grandparents Day

On Thursday, October 12, Yorkville Christian School had the honor of hosting Grandparents Day.  Nearly 130 grandparents joined us for this special event.  The day started off with a continental breakfast, and a presentation by Mrs. Connie Brott, a member of our Mission Advancement team.  Following the breakfast and opening presentation, grandparents, students, and staff attended chapel and listened to some great praise music from the Yorkville Christian Praise Team, as well as a fantastic message from Rev. Gerry Erffmeyer, a Yorkville Christian grandparent and current Chaplain at Park Place in Elmhurst.

After chapel, grandparents accompanied their grandchildren to their classes and visited two classes.  It was great to see the grandparents interact in the classes, and share many of their life experiences with the students and staff.  It was truly a blessing to have them as guests in the various classes.

The day concluded with a wonderful lunch and a few gifts for our guests.  Thank you so much to our Parent Ambassador volunteers, who helped in so many ways to make the day successful.  Also, a special thanks goes out to Mrs. Janine McDavitt and Mrs. Connie Brott, for their work in planning the day.  Grandparents Day is truly one of the favorite days on the calendar for Yorkville Christian.  We want to thank all the grandparents who joined us, and we cannot wait until next year.

FFA Rodeo Concessions & FFA Work Days

Before every weekend of rodeos, the Yorkville Christian FFA  has a workday for FFA members to clean up our concession stand. During the work day, we restocked all of our drinks, chips and candy and prepared the food that we are going to sell. We also wiped down all of the tables and wrote the menu board with pricing. At the end of every workday, we get to eat pizza and hang out for some time.

The Yorkville Christian FFA sells concessions at every monthly rodeo held at Mustang Arena and during those we have FFA members as well as some parents helping in the concession stand! FFA members can sign up for these rodeos at the start of the month, and the time is split up into different shifts. We usually have one person handling the money, and the rest are preparing different food and drinks, and making sure everything stays stocked. These rodeos are a great experience for the FFA members to bond and learn to work together. We are looking forward to seeing all our FFA students continue to  step up to help with our rodeos! Thank you to our adult volunteers, Mrs. Garbelman & Mrs. Reinke for helping with the concessions!

CLASSROOM CORNER

GEOMETRY

Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry classes created their own hand made protractors.  Students used the geometric tool to draw and measure all types of acute and obtuse angles.  It was a great practical lesson for the students, and they really enjoyed the activities.

Honors Chemistry

Honors Chemistry students, under the direction of Mrs. Painter, recently completed a lab to help practice the safe use of lab materials, testing precision, and the ability to follow directions and practice measuring techniques, while using a metric system.  This lab took place in our new science room!  We are very excited to have Mrs. Painter on staff this year, as well as our beautiful new science lab!

Bible Electives Class

The Bible Elective class, under the direction of Mrs. Liz Sovern, recently completed a project designed to gain understanding of the book of Daniel. Students analyzed chapters 1-6 of Daniel and then worked in groups to create a visual of what they learned and which lessons they would carry with them for life.

Introduction to Food Services

Students in Mrs. Wiesbrook’s Introduction to Food Services class recently learned several valuable lessons while creating salsa.  The students started by learning about various types of tomatoes, and discussed why the Roma Tomato is an excellent choice for things like salsa, because of its paste type texture.  The students learned about various vegetables that go into the making of salsa, and then also learned proper knife cutting techniques, including such methods as dicing and chopping.  After learning the proper techniques as well as the types of vegetables involved in the recipe, the students created their own salsa.  The final products looked and tasted amazing!

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop Class

Students under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt worked on a vector illustration project using tools they learned over the first few weeks of class.  This Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop class is a new class offering this year, and is taught in our new, state-of-the-art computer lab.  Students are very excited about this new elective opportunity.

Music

The middle school music class, taught by Mrs. Christy Motley, recently learned how to play tone chimes, as the students learned about the various elements of music.

Intro to Drawing and Painting

Mr. McDavitt’s Introduction to Drawing and Painting class recently completed a shading shapes project, where students had to put their shading and drawing techniques to use.  The students did an amazing job!

Anatomy and Physiology

Mrs. Painter’s Anatomy and Physiology class recently completed a lesson where students painted the bones of the cranium and the face to learn the various bones that exist in these areas.  It was a great visual for the students to help them learn the various bones.

Biology

Students in Biology class, as part of their Ecology unit, collaborated to identify the variety of terrestrial biomes found in North America.  Biology is taught by Mrs. Schnyders.  Great job class!

Mustangs in the Community

SENIOR PARENTS DECORATE SENIORS’ PARKING SPOTS

On Wednesday, September 13, the parents of Yorkville Christian High School seniors joined together at the school from 6-9 pm and decorated the parking spots of their sons or daughters.  The senior class was away at the Senior Fall Retreat, so the timing was perfect, as the senior returned the next day to see their parking spots decorated.  It was a special way for the parents to leave an encouraging message to the seniors and to trust God as they finish their last year at Yorkville Christian before pursuing God’s plan for each of them after high school.  Thank you to all the parents who attended the event.  It was a great success!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN SUPPORTS YORKVILLE CHAMBER GOLF OUTING

Once again, Yorkville Christian was actively involved in the Yorkville Chamber of Commerce Golf outing.  The event was held on Thursday, September 14, at the Blackberry Oaks Golf Club.  Mrs. Janine McDavitt, Yorkville Christian’s Director of Mission Advancement, volunteered at the event, and Yorkville Christian provided a gift basket to help support the silent auction at the outing.  It was a beautiful day with an excellent turnout, so it was a fantastic networking opportunity for Yorkville Christian.

SUMMER HAPPENINGS AT YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN

It was a busy summer at Yorkville Christian School.   It seemed like every day some activity was taking place.  Here is a recap of all the great things God did at our school this summer!

COACH ROC AND MICAH FUNDAMENTALS BASKETBALL CAMP

During the month of June, Yorkville Christian hosted the “Coach Roc and Micah Fundamentals Basketball Camp.”  35 players attended the camp, which was led by former Yorkville Christian All-State guard, Micah Schnyders, and Coach Roc, who has spent many years training top college and professional players.  The camp was a great opportunity for young players to improve their basketball game in the summer, but also a great way for many families to visit Yorkville Christian and see the school for the first time in many instances.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN TEACHER WINS AWARD

On Tuesday, June 6, Yorkville Christian teacher, Mrs. Blair Wiesbrook, was honored at the Kendall County “Tribute to Heroes” dinner.  The event honors Kendall County individuals who give selflessly to their community.  Mrs. Wiesbrook oversees the FFA program at Yorkville Christian and does a tremendous job teaching the agriculture classes at Yorkville Christian.  She also helps lead the Student Leadership program, as well as many other activities including Vacation Bible School.  Congratulations Mrs. Wiesbrook, and thank you for all your contributions to Yorkville Christian!

MUSTANG BASKETBALL CAMP

The Mustang Basketball Camp ran the week of June 12-15 for boys and girls in grades K-9.  There was a great turnout this year for Mustang Camp with over 70 in attendance.  The camp stressed the fundamentals of the game, and gave the players an opportunity to participate in some live games as well.  It was also an excellent opportunity to show some families Yorkville Christian for the first time.  The camp was run by our head basketball coach, Coach Sovern, along with his current basketball players.  Thank you to the many families who registered their children for the camp, and to the campers who participated.  It was a great week!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN STUDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Congratulations to Yorkville Christian High School junior, Ellie Stewart, who was named Illinois High School Rodeo Association “All Around Cowgirl” in June.  Ellie competed in six events at the state finals:  breakaway, goats, pole bending, barrels, team roping, and Queen contest.  Ellie was top four in multiple performances and multiple events, allowing her to win the award.  Congratulations Ellie!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Yorkville Christian hosted Vacation Bible School during the week of June 19-23.  The theme for the week was “Babylon Daniel’s Courage in Captivity.”  A little over 40 boys and girls participated in the week-long adventure.  The boys and girls enjoyed daily singing, Bible lessons, crafts, snacks, and other very exciting activities.  The guests also had the opportunity to hear from Daniel himself (thank you to Mr. McDavitt for playing the role of David).  Thank you to the volunteers who helped run the VBS from parents to current students and Yorkville Christian staff.  A special thanks to Mrs. Blair Wiesbrook and Mrs. Stewart for coordinating and planning the Vacation Bible School.  It was a great week of fun and learning more about the Bible.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN PARTICIPATES IN FOURTH OF JULY PARADE

Yorkville Christian School participated in the Yorkville Fourth of July Parade on Tuesday, July 4.  It was a beautiful weather day, and a large contingent of current families and students, alumni, staff, and friends marched in the parade to represent Yorkville Christian.  Once again, Yorkville Christian decorated a float for the parade, and distributed several informational flyers about the school, t-shirts, mini balls, and candy to those in attendance.  It was a great event, and an excellent opportunity for Yorkville Christian to further connect with the community.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS MUSTANG VOLLEYBALL CAMP

Yorkville Christian volleyball coach, Alyssa Ferchen, held a Mustang volleyball camp from July 5-7.  The camp focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game to girls entering grades K-8.  Current Mustang volleyball players helped run the camp and provided instruction to the younger players.  The camp was a great success, and Coach Ferchen looks forward to running more camps in the future.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PROGRAM HOSTS TEAM BOWLING PARTY

On Wednesday, July 12, the girls’ basketball program hosted a bowling party at Pinz in Yorkville for all the girls’ basketball players and their families.  35 people attended the event, which included two games of bowling and pizza and pop.  It was a great way for all the basketball families to get to know each other, and an opportunity for the girls’ team to bond together.

HUSTLE CAMP IS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Yorkville Christian hosted its annual Hustle Camp the week of July 17-21.  Coach Sovern welcomed nearly 150 boys and girls to The Canyon for this exciting camp.  Each day stressed the fundamentals of the game; a daily contest; and competitive games.  It was great to have such a great turnout, and the campers worked really hard all week.  A great deal of improvement was seen throughout the week.  Special thanks to Coach Sovern and Coach Brian Johnson for organizing the camp, and to the many current and former Mustangs who helped with the camp.  We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS “CREATIVE BY NATURE ART CAMP”

Yorkville Christian hosted an art camp this summer for students in grades K-12.  The “Creative by Nature” camp was designed and taught by Mrs. Amy Mattes.  This was the first time Yorkville Christian hosted an art camp, and it was a big success.  The students who attended the camp had a great time and completed some wonderful projects. The camp concluded with an Art Show that 15 people attended. Special thanks to Mrs. Mattes for running the camp, and we are very excited to host the camp in the years to come.

JASON OTTER BASKETBALL CAMP INVADES THE CANYON

During the week of July 24-28, the Jason Otter Basketball Camp took place in The Canyon at Yorkville Christian.  Jason Otter Basketball Camp is a national camp that travels throughout the country all summer hosting basketball camps at various locations.  The camp is a very intense camp with the average camp day going from 8 am until 5 pm.  This is the third year Yorkville Christian has hosted the Otter Camp, and we are very honored to hold it on our campus.

MUSTANG WRESTLING CAMP HAS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SUMMER CAMP

Coach Mike Vester and the Yorkville Christian wrestling program hosted a wrestling camp from July 27-29.  The camp was well attended as 30 wrestlers participated.  The Mustang wrestling staff, alums, current members of the Yorkville Christian team, and two University of Illinois starters, Lucas Byrd and Joe Roberts, served as clinicians.  It was a great three days of growth for the campers in attendance, with a great deal of mat time and one on one instruction.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS SOFTBALL CAMP

The Yorkville Christian High School softball team hosted a softball camp the week of July 31-August 3 at Bridge Field in Yorkville.  This was the first time Yorkville Christian ever hosted a softball camp, and the event was a huge success.  30 girls ranging in ages from grades 1-8 participated in the camp.  Coach Stoneberg and her staff taught the fundamentals of the game to the campers including hitting, fielding, baserunning, and sliding.  The weather was perfect all week, and the campers learned a great deal and had a great time.

HOOPS 4 HUNGER BASKETBALL CAMP DRAWS HUNDREDS FOR A GREAT CAUSE

On Saturday, August 5, Yorkville Christian alum, Micah Schnyders, ran his 3rd Annual Hoops 4 Hunger Basketball Camp at Yorkville Christian.  The camp is designed to collect food items for local food pantries.  This year the camp supported an organization called “All God’s People.”  This organization is led by Mrs. Doreen DeBoer, and it serves the homeless in Chicago and other neighboring areas.  The camp was a huge success, as over 200 campers attended, and the campers were able to completely fill the All God’s People box truck with food and clothing items.  Mrs. DeBoer commented that they have brought their truck to hundreds of events, but never before has a group filled it in one day, so it was so great to see God at work through this camp!  The camp also featured former UCLA legend, Coach Larry Farmer, who spoke to the campers about always believing in their dreams and following the old church hymn – Anything is Possible with God!  A special thanks to Coach Farmer for his great speech, as well as to all the coaches and volunteers, who helped make the camp such a great success!  Thank you to Micah Schnyders for giving back to the Yorkville Christian community.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN ART TEACHER HOSTS AIRBRUSH CAMP

Yorkville Christian School Art Teacher, Mr. John McDavitt, hosted an “Airbrush Camp” at Yorkville Christian School the week of August 8-10.  This was the first time a camp like this was hosted at Yorkville Christian, and the camp was a huge success.  The campers spent Day 1 of camp learning many of the airbrush basics and creating some temporary tattoos.  The second day was spent covering more of the basics and also lettering ball caps.  The final day of the camp focused on classic airbrush t-shirts, where each camper had the opportunity to airbrush their own t-shirt design.  The campers loved the camp, and we thank Mr. McDavitt for hosting the camp.  There will definitely be more camps like this in the future, so keep an eye out at our Events tab on our website.

MEET OUR NEW MUSTANG STAFF MEMBERS!

Meet Mrs. Beth Omar

English Teacher

Hello, my name is Beth Omar, and I am thrilled to be joining the staff at Yorkville Christian as an English teacher this year. This is my first year as a Mustang but I’ve been teaching for a long time. I started in 2004 in St. Charles and taught most recently in Oswego. My husband, sons and I enjoy finding adventure and traveling, especially to Disney Parks. I am a musician, like my teens. Our house is always loud with at least one instrument of some kind!

I am a graduate of Oswego High School and North Central College in Naperville. I am a church organist at Cross Lutheran in Yorkville. I started playing services when I was 13 but I still pray for Him to be in my hands before every single service! I enjoy volunteering with my son’s high school band program where I serve on the Booster Board as a VP of Operations and a junior high program liaison. In my spare time (ha!) I enjoy scrapbooking and crafting.

I have spent my entire teaching career in elementary schools. I never planned to teach high school English. Of course, we know that our plans are dwarfed by those of God. While I don’t yet understand why God brought me here, I’m so excited to do good work to honor Him here. How awesome that He trusts me in this way to step outside of my elementary comfort zone with His almighty help!

Meet Mrs. Sarah Painter

Science Teacher

Hello Mustang Families!  My name is Sarah Painter and I am so excited to have joined the Mustang teaching team.  I graduated from Moody Bible Institute and have taught middle school science for eleven years.  I love making science more understandable to students and helping them see the incredible world God designed for them to enjoy.  Teaching in a Christian setting is an incredible privilege and I look forward to what God is going to be doing in the student’s lives this year.

My husband Dan and I have been married for 22 years and enjoy ministering together at our church, Grace Pointe.  Together we enjoy spending time with our 4 sons and going to all of their different events.  Will is a freshman at Aurora University, Sam and Eli both attend YCS, and our youngest, Titus, is a 6th grader at Calvary Christian School.

In my spare time I enjoy walking, reading, crocheting, and hanging out with my family and friends.    I also love volunteering at our church’s youth group where I help to lead the high school girls group.  Seeing these girls get passionate about their walk with the Lord and applying it to their lives brings me so much joy and my prayer as I facilitate the new girls’ bible study at YCS that the same thing will happen.

With a little bit of planning ahead, you can use this program for almost everything you buy from fuel to clothing to groceries to travel to entertainment to your morning coffee drink, and much more! By taking a little bit of time to organize, you can earn A LOT of money towards your family’s tuition.

MISSION ADVANCEMENT

Greetings Mustang families,

We are underway in our 10th year of operation at Yorkville Christian School. We are celebrating a significant milestone! We’ve grown so much since 2014. As leaders in our community, John and Michelle Stewart, our founders, have always had a heart to help develop youth to become strong leaders for future generations. In 2014, Yorkville Christian School opened its doors in a temporary facility. Four years later in 2018, through God’s guidance and blessings, a new school facility was built ready to energize, educate, and impact students to carry out God’s plan for their lives in His Kingdom. And now, 10 years later in 2024, we have added 7th/8th grades, a computer lab, more classes in each department, more clubs and expanded our athletic programming too! And more is planned…

Yorkville Christian School doesn’t exist just to give families an option to public school or offer a partnership with homeschooling families, though many parents have told us how appreciative they are to have an alternative education option. YCS is about equipping our students with a biblical worldview prepared to enter the world as adults to be productive and caring individuals. Our mission is to energize, educate and impact the world.

ENERGIZE – We have been growing in more ways than just enrollment. By adding amazing, supportive staff, along with additional sports, clubs and more resources, our students will get energized to meet the world after graduation ready to make a difference.

EDUCATE – We have been continually moving forward in advancing our curriculum to competitive levels with the addition of honors, AP, and dual credit courses. All subjects are taught with a biblical worldview so students are equipped to defend their faith in a growing world in which faith plays no part.

IMPACT THE WORLD – Young people always have a way of impacting the world. Through their time here at YCS, our students are ready to implement what they’ve learned and will be well-prepared to live their lives for Christ, spreading His light wherever they go.

Through support from our founders, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends like you, Yorkville Christian School can continue its mission of providing Christ-centered learning to future leaders. Support is essential to keep us growing and thriving! We keep our tuition modest in order to allow for more students to be able to experience growth in their education and their faith at YCS. But the actual costs are higher, as we provide tuition assistance to help families ensure that their students can attend, and we must account for the yearly increases for basic functioning of the building and technology. And this is where our Annual Fund plays a role.

Soon we will begin rolling out our 4th Annual Fund with a target amount of $250,000. Please watch your mail for materials from YCS with information on how you can play a role in

continued growth of the school not just for your children, but for those who will come after.

Your participation is vital to the school, no matter the amount you are able to contribute. Imagine what could happen if every family participated. Our school’s enrollment could grow exponentially!

We also have opportunities for those wishing to go ABOVE AND BEYOND our Annual Fund. New this year are Legacy Bricks (find more information under our “Donate” tab), as well as our Sponsor Banner program for those of you with businesses or friends with businesses (contact Mrs. McDavitt for more information). We also welcome information about employers with a matching gift program, or even those of you with businesses or business connections who would like to discuss major giving opportunities.

Please continue to keep YCS in prayer this year; that God will bless us in ways that we can’t even imagine, all the while, holding true to His Truth and His Light.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”  2 Corinthians 9:7

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN FOOTBALL COOP PLAYS A GAME IN AN NFL STADIUM!

Did you know that Yorkville Christian is part of a coop football program called the Illinois Crusaders? It is a 11-man tackle football program that plays a full slate of games. Several Yorkville Christian students have participated over the past few years. Yorkville Christian alum, Chase Davis, is continuing his football career at Concordia in Wisconsin after playing for the Crusaders, and now his younger brother and current Yorkville Christian student, Brody Davis, is the team’s quarterback. You don’t think this is an excellent football option for a small private school? Well, on Saturday, August 26, the team played a game against the Cincinnati Landmarks at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL Indianapolis Colts!  The game was a tremendous experience for our students, and showed again, the great football experience that is available to Yorkville Christian students who are interested in playing football.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT

On Thursday, August 31, Yorkville Christian hosted a Back to School Night for all Yorkville Christian families.  Nearly 190 students were represented at the event.   Families had an opportunity to pick up student schedules, locker assignments, Chromebook, purchase spirit wear, and meet the teachers and staff.  It was a great night to help kick off the start of the school year on September 5.  We are so thankful to God for the families He has led to Yorkville Christian, and we are so excited to see how God directs us throughout the school year.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN STARTS NEW SCHOOL YEAR WITH CONVOCATION SERVICE

On Tuesday, September 5, Yorkville Christian welcomed back students to the start of the 2023-2024 school year.  It was so great to not only welcome back returning students, but also so many new faces to Yorkville Christian.  We started the school year with a Convocation Service in the chapel.  Yorkville Christian principal, Mr. Fred Versluys, welcomed the students and shared how excited the faculty and staff was to have them all as members of the Mustang family.  Yorkville Christian alum, Mr. Noah Lewis, gave a brief message to the students emphasizing that they were not at Yorkville Christian by accident, but God had a specific plan to lead their families to Yorkville Christian.  The service ended with a time of praise and worship.  It was so great to start our school year by giving praise to God for his continued faithfulness to Yorkville Christian.  This year, Yorkville Christian celebrates its 10th year of existence, and we want to focus all year on God’s faithfulness to our mission.

SOCCER PICKS UP ANOTHER WIN!

On Tuesday, September 5, the Yorkville Christian soccer team played Parkview Academy.  The Mustangs came out aggressively right from the start and quickly gained a lead on Parkview in route to a 8-1 victory!  The Mustangs were led by Dakota Bulson, who recorded the hat trick with three goals; Danielle Bulson, who scored two goals; and Austin Vugteveen, Angelo Colosimo, and Dillon Bulson each tallied a goal as well.  The eight goals scored was a school record for the Mustangs.  It was a total team effort in the win.  Great job Mustangs!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS “SENIOR SUNRISE BREAKFAST”

Yorkville Christian started the new school year by celebrating our seniors with a “Senior Sunrise Breakfast” on Thursday, September 7.  The event was for all Yorkville Christian seniors and their parents, and the morning consisted of a delicious buffet style breakfast; a motivational guest speaker; some mixer activities; a prayer and dedication time for the seniors and families; and a viewing of the sunrise along with some photos.  It was a great way to start the new year and honor our seniors, as they begin their final year at Yorkville Christian.

SOCCER TEAM KEEPS ROLLING!

The Yorkville Christian High School soccer team recorded another win on Friday, September 8, with a 3-1 win over IFS.   The Mustangs were paced by Dakota Bulson with two goals and a goal from Henry Fox! The Mustangs also received an excellent effort from Jess Seaton in goal. It was another great team win! The team moved to 3-3 on the season with the win. Great job Mustangs and Coach Garcia!

VOLLEYBALL TEAM PLACES 5TH AT SANDWICH INVITE

On Saturday, September 9, the Yorkville Christian volleyball team participated in the Sandwich Invite at Sandwich High School.  The team played very well throughout the day, and finished the tourney with a 3-2 record and a fifth-place finish.  The Mustangs defeated Flanagan High School, Elgin Academy, and Sandwich High School along the way.  Great job girls!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN SENIOR NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM

Yorkville Christian senior volleyball player, Sofia Loffredi, was named to the Sandwich Invitational All-Tournament Team on Saturday, September 9.  Sofia helped lead the team to a 5th place finish at the Invite.  Congratulations Sofia!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN SENIORS ENJOY FALL RETREAT

On Tuesday, September 12, the Yorkville Christian senior class departed Yorkville Christian for a Fall Retreat at Expeditions Unlimited in Baraboo, Wisconsin.  We thank the Lord for safe travels, as the group arrived around 2 pm, and did not waste any time getting started with fun activities.  The first day consisted of games with the camp counselors; a group session on Biblical servant leadership; a Ninja Warriors obstacle course; and a campfire with delicious smores!

Most of day two was spent with the seniors navigating the “high ropes course.”  It was a great deal of fun for the students, and was an excellent team building activity.

During the afternoon and evening, the seniors enjoyed some canoeing and paddle boarding on the lake, as well as a time of ax throwing and archery.  The seniors had a great time with all of these activities!  There was also another time of worship in the evening.

Mission Advancement News

The End….Are You Sure?

Big sighs are shared amongst students and faculty as a successful school year ends at Yorkville Christian School.  Memories are now archived in our minds.  “Freedom” is experienced by all – seniors have completed graduation requirements; other students are looking forward to family vacations, summer sports, and/or summer jobs; teachers can relax.  The END is here.

Are you sure?  Though a school year has ended, it is not “the end.”  Summer is a time for Yorkville Christian School administrators and Board to review curriculum, building needs, staffing needs, and financial needs to prepare for the fall term.

Are you sure?  Though you have faithfully prayed, volunteered, and financially supported Yorkville Christian during the year, it is not “the end.”  Your response of support during the summer months is just as crucial as during the school year…you have been and are an important partner in the summer planning that takes place.

Are you sure?  Additionally, your prayers for our staff and students are not “the end,” as even during the summer they are a blessing.  Pray for rest and peace for all.

I recently read the following which, though embarrassed to admit, mirrors my reaction on a busy day, is a reminder how important prayer is for each of us no matter where we are, what time it is, who it is for:

“Holding five items, you scan the store’s crowded checkout lanes and strategically plot your choices.  An express lane opens!  You triumphantly out-maneuver several shoppers and become the second one in line.  Only then you notice the brimming cart ahead of you – the thrill of victory becomes the agony of defeat.  Although tempted to count aloud the woman’s items, you ponder the options…”  What if … she is a single mom, rushing to purchase needed groceries before picking up students?  What if … you prayed for her instead of grumbling?  What if … you prayed for the tired looking cashier, or the upset people behind you, or those who cannot afford to buy even five items?”                   LWML Mission Moments

Your prayers are not “the end,” but, in fact, are the ongoing beginning for each of us, for each day, for each school year.  There would never be enough words to thank you for continuing your partnership with us…your prayers as well as your volunteering and dollar gifts provide the strength for administration and Board to forge ahead and provide an educational environment where students are energized, educated, and prepared to impact the world as His servants.

Have a blessed summer as we continue our prayers for all of our partners….parents, grandparents, and friends….as well as for our students.

Intro to Agriculture Students take Field Trip

At the start of May, the Intro to Agriculture students got to take a highly-anticipated trip to Fair Oaks Farms in Fair Oaks, Indiana. The students learned about the dairy and pig farms through various interactive experiences. First, they went on a tour to the cow barn. A newborn calf was laying with its mother in the birthing barn. Then, they headed to lunch where they sampled delicious snacks made from milk products at the farm. After lunch, they visited the pig barn and witnessed some of the pigs being born! Ice cream followed, and then a visit to the interactive crop experience. The crop experience was full of all sorts of fun, crop-themed games and activities! Some even dressed up as corn cobs and danced around! Then after buying Fair Oaks merchandise from the gift shop, they headed home. A quick side trip to a gas station for a snack break was fun. Students were being silly while they hung out for a few minutes. Every student loved different aspects of the trip and had a great time learning about agriculture and bonding with their peers.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Health Class

The Yorkville Christian High School Health class, under the instruction of Mrs. Schnyders, participated in the “A.C.T. Now” presentation led by Mr. Randy Roberts from the Bristol-Kendall Fire Department.  The lesson gave students a better understanding of the facts on cardiac arrest and what they should do in response, including hands-on CPR experience.  A special thanks to Mr. Roberts for his time, and to Mrs. Schnyders for coordinating this experience for our students

Toy and Game Design

Mr. McDavitt’s Toy and Game Design class recently designed their own games, as a class project.  Students had to prep their game boards, design game instructions, package the game, and test their games by having classmates play the game.  It was a fun and creative way to show the students all that goes into toy and game design.

Life Skills

Mr. Vester’s Life Skills class completed a section on tools and the proper usage for each tool.  The class was introduced to 50 various tools, and learned how each one is used and which jobs each tool is most beneficial to use to complete that particular job(s).  It was a great unit for the students, and the knowledge attained is definitely something they can use for the rest of their lives.

Toy and Game Design

Toy and Game Design students recently presented their “Happy Meal Toy” concepts at a “corporate meeting.”  The students designed and illustrated their toy lines, prepared concept boards, wrote their team presentations and did an excellent job presenting!  As an absolute perfect follow up to this lesson, the very next day, a professional board game designer, Mr. Bob Kamp, came to speak to the students about his work.  Mr. Kamp has designed such board games as Choice Words, Blank Slate, and Ferret Out.  Mr. Kamp’s board game, Blank Slate, has sold over 1,000,000 units and is going to be featured as a new game show on the Game Show Network for 65 episodes, and will be hosted by Mario Lopez.  Mr. Kamp spoke to our students about every step involved with creating your own board game. He covered things like developing a prototype; visiting trade shows to test the product out; meeting with toy production companies to sell the product; how royalties work; and much more. Our students have been working in class on developing their own board games, so this guest could not have been more perfect! Mr. Kamp answered several questions from the students and even played a few rounds of Blank Slate with the students and gave a copy of his Blank Slate game to the winner. We are so grateful for Mr. Kamp for coming out and sharing his real-life experiences with our students.

Intro to Agriculture

Mrs. Stewart’s Intro to Agriculture class visited Fair Oak Farm in Indiana on Wednesday, May 3. The students were able to experience the Dairy and Pig Adventure, where they learned about how modern dairy and pig farms operate.  This was an excellent opportunity for the students to see first-hand the ideas they had been studying in class.  Special thanks to Introduction to Ag teacher, Mrs. Stewart, for coordinating the trip for our students.

SENIOR STUDENTS PRESENT “SENIOR EXIT INTERVIEWS”

All students in the senior class and staff members spent the afternoons of May 9-11 together completing senior exit interviews.  The objective of these interviews was to have every senior present to a panel of staff members explaining how he or she had grown as a scholar, influencer, and disciple of God during his or her time at Yorkville Christian.  Each senior was required to prepare a slideshow presentation and visual aid to help show growth in these areas, and share their personal experiences, as he or she reflected on his or her time at Yorkville Christian High School.  The presentations were amazing, and it was so apparent to see how God is at work in the lives of our students during their time at Yorkville Christian.  It was also great to hear the many stories of the impact teachers have had on the lives of these students during their time at Yorkville Christian, not only in the classroom, but just as importantly, outside the classroom.  Students shared several stories of teachers going above and beyond in the classroom with them, but also many stories were shared about the impact of being on a sports team, part of a club, or serving on mission days had on their spiritual growth.  The three-day exercise was an incredibly rewarding one, not only for the students, but the staff as well.  The students did an wonderful job, and it was very easy to see that they are prepared for the next phase of their lives, and are excited to carry out God’s plans for their futures.

Physical Science

Physical Science students, under the direction of Mr. Versluys, recently completed a lab to discover the boiling point of various solutions.  They also investigated if adding salt changes the boiling point?  The students really enjoyed the hands-on learning experience.

Health Class

Health students dissected cow eyes as part of their eye health unit.  Students learned about the structures and functions of the parts of the eye, disorders that can impact eyesight, and healthy habits for healthy eyes.  Students in the class, taught by Mrs. Schnyders, really enjoyed getting a close up look at how the eye works.

Biblical Studies

Mrs. Sovern’s Biblical Studies classes recently had a guest speaker who shared his faith walk and how the Lord has worked through him the past few years of his life.  The guest speaker was Christian Sovern (Yorkville Christian Class of 2020), and he shared how God had been at work in his life over the past few years and how the experiences he went through helped grow his faith.  The presentation was an excellent resource to students, as they prepared their faith reflections as a culminating project for the class.

Biology

Mrs. Schnyders recently had her Biology students dissect pigs following the completion of their Body Systems unit.  Students identified the organs from each of the systems and got a real life visual of how the various organs are connected.  The students really enjoyed the lab!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN TO OFFER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FALL OF 2023

After years of prayer and discussion, the Yorkville Christian School Board in December approved the start of a 7th and 8th grade middle school at Yorkville Christian.  The middle school will start in the Fall of 2023.  The 7th grade class will be capped at 25 students, and the 8th grade class will be capped at 25 students.   Yorkville Christian Middle School will offer sports — girls volleyball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, soccer, and track for now.  The tuition will be $8500 a year per student, and because of the limited enrollment spots, we will not be offering tuition assistance for the middle school; however, there will be a multiple student discount of $2000, if a family has two students in the middle school or a student in the middle school and another in the high school.  The middle school students will be offered a full variety of classes including electives, and will have a special wing of the building, but will be switching classes, participating in chapel, and eating lunch in the school cafeteria, and participating in PE classes in our Canyon gymnasium. We will have a special staff of teachers we will be hiring to teach the middle school students.

Here are the two steps to enroll:

1)  Complete the enrollment application which can be done using this link:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/enrollment/

2)  Families will need to make a $600 tuition down payment, which will be subtracted from the overall tuition cost of $8500 (or $8250 with the early discount).  The payment can be made securely using this link or a check can be dropped off at the school office (checks payable to Yorkville Christian High School).  Here is the link for tuition down payment:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/product/enrollment-fees/

PLEASE share this exciting news and information with any families you know who might be interested, as we are definitely capping each class at 25 total students, so spots will fill up quickly.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN PARENT AMBASSADORS UPDATE

Yorkville Christian School Parent Ambassadors are a group of parents who have hearts to serve the school, teachers and staff with their time, resources and/or talents, and engage others by telling their family’s personal journey at YCHS to help grow enrollment. This vital group knows the importance of parent involvement at YCHS by lending an extra set of hands to our dedicated staff who give abundantly of their own time, funds and other resources.

Parent Ambassadors compliment the mission of Yorkville Christian School – Energize, Educate and Impact the World!

Although our Parent Ambassador calendar has not been terribly full since October, we ARE beginning to ramp up for the summer and fall activities. If you would like to join us at our upcoming meeting (Tuesday, May 2 at BOTH 3pm and 6pm), we would love to have you.

Current items on the agenda include:

• help in passing out or hanging flyers at local businesses in each family’s area to promote our new middle school for next year – YCHS will be adding 7th and 8th grades to the 2023-24 school year

• engage families within your sphere of influence to promote YCHS and receive at $250 referral

discount when the families you’ve contacted register their students

• continue to share YCHS and YCHS Athletics on your social media

Upcoming dates:

• canvas your local businesses for gift cards and/or donations for our Trivia Night – to be done all

summer long with final donations to be turned in on September 15

• assistance with VBS (Vacation Bible School) – June 19-23 from 9am to 12pm

• walkers to represent YCHS in the July 4th parade in Yorkville – passing out handouts and small

items for the little children

• volunteers to work the tent handing our flyers at Yorkville Hometown Days – specifically Saturday, September 2

• grab a group of friends from work or church and register at our 3rd Annual Trivia Night – September 23, 6-9pm

• volunteers needed to work our 2nd Annual Grandparents Day – October 12

• host a trunk at our 2nd Annual Trunk-or-Treat (invite others from church groups, athletic clubs,

businesses too) – October 21, 1-4pm

• spread the word about our Open House – October 22, 1-4pm

To be a part of this servant group, aside from attending just a few meetings per year, parents are asked to participate in at least two of these:

• help promote the school in person, through flyers and social media, but most importantly,

personal invitation (*all Parent Ambassadors are asked to help with this)

• volunteer time or resources at various events throughout the year

• help acquire gift cards or prizes for certain events

Again, parents aren’t asked to do it all, just to be aware of what’s in your toolbox and help in those ways.

Please contact Mrs. Janine McDavitt (Parent Ambassador Coordinator) by emailing her at

janinemcdavitt@yorkvillechristian.com to sign up to receive Parent Ambassador communications or assist with any of these events.

Physical Science

Students in Physical Science class, under the direction of Mr. Fred Versluys, recently discovered trends in chemical reactions in Physical Science using micropipet techniques.

Intro to Agriculture

Students in Introduction to Agriculture made container gardens in celebration of Easter as part of their unit on garden planning.  Recycled materials and individual creativity were used to design and create the “empty tomb” and the “stone rolled away” representing HOPE!  Students are making plans for large container gardens full of perennial herbs and pollinator habitats to be planted on our campus in the coming weeks.  Another great hands-on project in Intro to Ag under the direction of Mrs. Stewart!

English I

English 1 students, led by English teacher, Ms. Taglia, recently read the Odyssey in groups.  The class switched between the epic and the graphic novel to deepen understanding of the content and become familiar with multiple styles of writing.

Toy and Game Design

On Wednesday, April 12, Mr. McDavitt’s Toy and Game Design class ventured out on a field trip to Stern Pinball in Elk Grove Village, the largest pinball manufacturer in the world.  The Yorkville Christian students were met by Mr. Ernst, who showed the students around the pinball factory and explained all the various assembly line stations of a pinball machine, including how the board for the machine is pressed; how the bumpers are installed; and how the larger toys in a pinball machine work.  Another part of the tour included showing our students how the mother board in the pinball machines have changed over the years.  Our students were also able to visit the warehouse and packing and shipping areas in the factory to see how that part of the operation worked.  Finally, the students had the opportunity to visit “Pinball Alley” and play some of their favorite pinball machines.  The trip was an amazing opportunity for our students to get a behind-the-scenes look at the world of toy design in the real world.  Thank you to Mr. McDavitt for organizing the field trip, and Mrs. Bulson for chaperoning the trip.

Geometry

Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry classes recently participated in a “shape walk” to discover all the 2D shapes the students had been studying in their recent unit.  Students walked around the outside of the campus and identified several shapes in various real-life settings.  It was a great way to recognize mathematics all around us in God’s creation.

Biology

Biology students, in Mrs. Schnyder’s class, recently participated in a “Survivor Science” game with challenge questions on the Excretory System.  The students played a series of “Survivor” review games to support their learning of each of the body systems.  Each student even received a “Survivor Buff,” and the class was broken up into teams.  The students had a great time with the games, and it was an excellent form of review for the students.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

The Introduction to Drawing and Painting class, under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt, recently started the painting portion of the course.  The students started by working on color mixing and painting shapes.

Animal Science

Animal Science students, under the direction of Mrs. Wiesbrook, recently completed a study of the Poultry Industry, covering topics such as chick embryology, feeding and managing chicks, and studying chicken production.  During this unit, students incubated chicken eggs!  Fertilized eggs take about 21 days to hatch.  Students noticed signs of hatching on day 20, and day 21 the hatching took place.

Sports Management

The Sports Management class, taught by Mr. Sovern, recently completed a project where students had to pick a sports facility, and research several different aspects of the facility.  The students could pick any sports facility in the United States, and had to provide information including the type of facility (single or multipurpose); crowd management; security; personnel; and a yearly or monthly calendar of usage.  After compiling all their research, each student gave a presentation to the class.  The students did an excellent job with the research and class presentations!

Biology

Biology students recently completed Skeletal and Muscle Exhibition Stations as part of their human body systems unit.  The activity expanded their knowledge on these two systems.  The stations also tied the body system to the previous unit of cellular respiration through stations like “The Wall Sit” which demonstrated muscle fatigue as a result of anaerobic respiration.  Great job students and Mrs. Schnyders for the great work!

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students in Introduction to Drawing and Painting class recently worked on shading and anatomy of the face, with an emphasis on the eyes.

Toy and Game Design

Students in Mr. McDavitt’s Toy Design class developed toy concepts for their Happy Meal Toy presentations.  Each team was assigned a specific licensing property.  For example, one team had Toy Story, and another team had The Incredibles.  Using those licensing properties, each team had to create a toy that could be used in a Happy Meal.  It was a great project that really allowed students to use their creative talents.

Media Production

Students in Mr. Vester’s Media Production class conducted interviews with various Canyon sponsors who support Yorkville Christian.  The students asked a variety of questions and put together articles for some of the banner program sponsors.  Students also have been creating five-minute original content podcasts covering a variety of topics such as the NCAA basketball tournament, NBA trade deadline, and gaming trends.  The students have done wonderful work in both areas.

Screenwriting

Students in Mr. Vester’s Screenwriting Class have been making huge waves toward writing feature film length scripts. The first part of the semester of Screenwriting is all about learning film structure, character development, scene conflict writing, story maps, etc…and then students start writing dialogue. At almost the midpoint of the semester, students have as many as 40 pages of script written. A feature film is usually about 120 pages. Great accomplishments!  Great job Mustangs!

Math classes celebrate Pi Day

On March 14, the math classes at Yorkville Christian celebrated Pi Day.  Students brought in a large variety of pies to not only celebrate Pi (3.14) Day, but also Albert Einstein’s birthday.  The students really enjoyed the activities, as well as the sweet treats.  Thank you to Mrs. Tickel for arranging the day.

Indian Valley Vocational Center (IVVC) Visit

On Friday, March 17, thirty students from Yorkville Christian High School visited Indian Valley Vocational Center to observe several of the more popular programs Indian Valley offers for high school students.  With Yorkville Christian’s new partnership with Indian Valley, our students can now take a variety of classes at IVVC including such areas as welding, electrician training, law enforcement, and early childhood development and education, just to name a few of the many offerings.  Our Yorkville Christian students were able to attend for a half day and listen to many presentations about the various offerings to help them decide which classes they may want to register for next year.  This partnership is a valuable asset for our students, and one Yorkville Christian is very excited about for the future!

Introduction to Drawing and Painting – Students in Mr. McDavitt’s Introduction to Drawing and Painting class recently completed a Grid Drawing project for which students used a reference photo with a grid laid over the image.  Students prepared a drawing page with a larger grid corresponding to the reference.  Then the students copied each square from the photo to their drawing page.  The students produced some incredible products!

Biology

Biology students recently completed a “The Senses” lab which included tests on balance, distribution of touch receptors in the skin, deciphering of odors with mystery smells, a blind spot test, and more.  Students collected their data and researched related questions to support their mastery of this unit.  Thank you Mrs. Schnyders for a great lesson.

Health

Health students recently dissected pig hearts to complete their unit on the circulatory system.  Students identified the four chambers as well as the arteries, veins, and valves.  This hands-on experience enhanced student understanding of the heart’s structure, function, and the flow of blood to, through, and from the heart.  Thank you to Mrs. Schnyders for providing this experience for our students.

The second part of the enrollment process is the tuition down payment.  Once the tuition down payment is made, your student is officially enrolled for the 2023-2024 school year.  Tuition at Yorkville Christian High School is $9500 ($9250 with the early enrollment discount), which includes ALL costs.  The tuition down payment is $600, which is deducted from your total tuition amount.  The tuition down payment can be made using this secure link:

Once you complete the enrollment application, you are welcome to apply for tuition assistance.  All you have to do to apply for tuition assistance is email your last two tax returns to the following email address accounting@yorkvillechristian.com.  Your records will be reviewed by a small, confidential committee, and you should receive an answer on whether or not you qualify for assistance and how much you qualify for within 48 hours.

ALUMNI NEWS

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN ALUM STUDIES ABROAD IN AUSTRALIA

Hello Mustangs! I am Millie Stewart, YCHS Class of 2020. Currently, I am attending

Iowa State University, majoring in Agricultural Business. Over spring break, I was able

to participate in a study abroad trip to Australia. This was an amazing experience to see

agriculture on the other side of the world! This opportunity was presented to me last fall

by Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and after receiving my

acceptance to the program I began preparations for the trip.

The focus of the trip was agricultural production, business, and trade in Australia. It

included a 3-credit class which prepared us for our travels. All travelers prepared a pre-

trip presentation, which helped us to learn about the different agricultural industries of

Australia. We travelled with 26 students and 3 professors, all of various agricultural

studies at Iowa State. Once surviving our 17-hour flight to Sydney, we hit the ground

running, experiencing as much as we could in our short 10 days in Australia.

We travelled almost 1500 miles by bus during our trip to be able to see as many

agricultural sectors of the country as possible. A few of the highlights were the Sydney

Fish Market, which auctions off around $800,000 of fresh fish each day; a potato farm

with its own potato chip factory and variety of purple potatoes; a huge rice farm; a clover

seed company that is implementing the use of biosolids in their program; the Wagga

Wagga Agricultural Institute, a college with all sorts of agriculture; siphon-irrigated corn,

many sheep farms, and, of course, I cannot forget the wild kangaroo! We also spent

time visiting tourist stops, including the 3 Sisters Mountain lookout, touring the Sydney

Opera House, Bondi Beach, the 12 Apostles National Park, and attending an Australian

Football Game, which is a very interesting sport.

Having the chance to gain a global perspective on agriculture was a great benefit of my

study abroad trip. Even though we only traveled to Australia, we were able to see the

impacts of trade from many different countries on the eastern side of the world. I even

was able to learn a little about private education in Australia and that it is a popular

choice! I recommend taking the chance to study abroad to any perspective college

student who has the opportunity, it was a trip I will remember for a lifetime.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN ALUM HELPS LEAD COLLEGE PROGRAM TO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND ELITE 8 OF NCAA MARCH MADNESS TOURNAMENT

Former Yorkville Christian All-State basketball player, Micah Schnyders, recently helped lead the Wheaton College Thunder basketball team to its first CCIW Conference Championship in 15 years, and a trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  The Thunder finished the conference with a very impressive 14-2 record, and the team advanced to the Elite 8 of the March Madness tournament before losing to Christopher Newport (Virginia) by a score of 76-70 in the game to advance to the Final 4.  It was a great season, as the team finished with a school record 25 wins and only 5 losses.  Great job, Micah!

CALAMITY JANE’S

Welcome to our Mustang Minute! This week’s featured Canyon sponsor is Calamity Jane’s in Sugar Grove. This year is Calamity Janes’ 13th year in business. The business officially opened to the public on January 1, 2011, and since then, owner Jane Alabastro says that they have been thriving.

“Calamity Janes is like one big family,” she said in our interview. Jane has been in the business for nearly 40 years. Her favorite part of working at Calamity Jane’s is the people. She loves helping people and entertaining them. Jane says, “When people go out, they go out for a reason. They want to be entertained. Calamity Janes is a great place to go for that. We like to help people have fun.” She also said it is family friendly. All ages are welcome. They have coloring pages for kids, karaoke two days a week, and a band on Saturdays.

Some of Calamity Jane’s most popular and favorite meals are their breakfast, pot roast shooter, tater tots, tacos, and their awesome fish fry.

Jane says that Calamity Jane’s is a Canyon sponsor because they love the feeling of it being a family here at YCHS. Everyone is so kind. She says it is a wonderful school that was much needed in this area, and she is happy it is here.

Calamity Janes is located on Rt. 47 in Sugar Grove and is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 am to 1 am, Friday from 11 am to 2 am, Saturday from 8:30 am to 2 am, and Sundays 8:30 am to 1 am. They are closed on Mondays. Calamity Janes is busiest on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday mornings.

PRINT SOURCE GRAPHICS

Hi! Welcome to the Mustang Minute. Today we get the pleasure of talking to one of our Canyon sponsors, Jason Lambert. Jason is the owner of Print Source Graphics, located in Yorkville, IL. Print Source Graphics is celebrating their 5th year in business. Currently there are three employees alongside several vendors who serve and support the Print Source Graphic team. They are best known in the local area for their decals, signs, and other wide format printing. However, their niche by volume would be custom roll label manufacturing. Print Source Graphics is primarily a B2B operation. They work with all sizes of business with many customers being small businesses. They also do some work with individuals as well.

Their service is second to none. They are a full-service printing company that can serve as a “One Stop Shop” for client’s printing needs. Jason says, “we strive to understand the customer and their business so that we can offer them the most effective solutions and advice.” They also store clients’ logos and other requirements so that every project is printed to their specification promoting excellence in brand identity for the customers they serve.

Jason has been working in the industry for over 23 years. He has held positions including Graphic Designer, Customer Service, Regional Sales, VP of Sales, VP of Manufacturing, CEO, President and Owner. He says that over the past 23 years technology has been the biggest change in their industry. The advancements have made print more cost effective while also expanding capabilities. One of the reasons Jason has always enjoyed this industry is because of the ongoing changes and opportunities to learn about new ideas, technology, equipment, and techniques. “It makes the job fun and exciting!”

STIFEL INVESTMENTS

Hello and welcome to the Mustang Minute! Today, we focus our attention on Stifel Investments, a strong supporter of Yorkville Christian High School and a sponsor of the YCHS Canyon! We had the opportunity to hear from Senior Vice President of Investments, John Pethokoukis who gave us some insight on the company, himself, and what it takes to thrive in the financial industry.

Stifel Investments was founded in 1890, and now has 400 offices in 48 states with its headquarters located in St Louis, MO. Stifel is one of the nation’s largest (seventh largest in terms of financial advisors) full-service wealth management and investment banking firms. John personally focuses on high-net-worth individuals and started doing this in 1986 and has been with Stifel since August of 2019.

John says that Stifel is a very client and advisor friendly firm. He says, “the financial markets are constantly changing which provides both excitement and challenges in working as a financial advisor. Being a financial advisor requires following events closely in the political and business world as those are interrelated and oftentimes affect each other.” He recommends that students interested in a career as a financial advisor take classes in economics, finance, accounting, and political science.

John said the company believes in the mission and direction of Yorkville Christian High School. We appreciate the support that they have given us and continue to show as we push our mission forward.

HEARTLAND BANK

Welcome to another Mustang Minute! In this edition, we turn our attention to Heartland Bank. Heartland is a full-service community bank that offers a wide range of deposit, lending and investment options tailored to meet the needs of our customers. With 69 full-service branches, 2 drive-thru only locations and an additional Community Reinvestment Mortgage office located in Chicago, Heartland is very accessible to its customers. We were able to talk to Jennifer Vandermeir, Assistant Vice President, Retail Manager working out of the Newark branch who shed a little light on Heartland’s mission and its support of the Yorkville Christian mission.

“May 2023 will mark my 15th year with Heartland Bank,” Jennifer said. “I’ve worked at many of our locations including: Newark, Millbrook, Shorewood, Plainfield Caton Farm, Elwood, Huntley and Schaumburg. Being a part of our team is rewarding! I personally enjoy working independently with retail staff in furthering their individual paths of development here at the bank. Each one of us is an important part of the team.  We each have different strengths and we combine all of those to assist our customers.”

Heartland’s mission statement is Create VALUE for the customer, earn a PROFIT for the Bank, and have FUN doing it! Jennifer explained, “we try to set ourselves apart from other financial institutions through providing A+ Customer Experience with each customer interaction.”

Heartland has been a tremendous supporter of Yorkville Christian High School. We asked Jennifer how that relationship came to be and how it’s grown. “I am charged with actively seeking out new opportunities for business growth and development through community involvement. With YCHS playing such a large part in supporting youth in our area, we started looking for ways we could offer our support to the school. Tim Schnyders and I virtually met in 2020 through an introduction from a mutual acquaintance and our relationship really took off from there.  Yorkville Christian has been so kind to allow Heartland Bank the opportunity to partner on many of their events over the years including Trivia Night, Hoops for Hunger, Classic Car Show, Grandparents Day, and Trunk or Treat. We have participated in the school’s annual fund and sports donation drives, and most recently signed the school up for our Spirit Debit Card and Score with Heartland programs.”

Heartland also recently donated a state-of-the-art scoreboard for the Yorkville Christian Canyon, which will get much use in the coming years leaving a lasting impression and legacy on the school! Thank you to Jennifer for taking the time to speak with us and for Heartland’s continued support of the Mustang mission!

PARADISE CAR WASH

Welcome to a Mustang Minute. Paradise Car Wash has been a staple in Yorkville since the early 2000s. Even with the busy season approaching, owner Chad Green took time out of his schedule to give us a look at the Paradise legacy, owning and operating a family-owned, family run business, and their ties to the Yorkville Christian High School mission.

The wash originally opened as Landmark Car Wash back in the 1980’s.  A rebrand and remodel was done in 2002 and the wash was renamed Paradise Car Wash.  “My family then purchased the wash in November of 2004 and we have been running it ever since,” Chad explained. “Before purchasing Paradise, we used to own gas stations.  Both locations had an automatic car wash on site, and we had looked into possible expansion into the full-service car wash market.  We attended several trade shows, scouted properties, and even hired a consulting firm, but it was not until the sale of the gas stations that we made the full commitment and purchased Paradise.”

Paradise has continued to grow in sales every year, with the exception of the first year of Covid, since the family took over.  Their average staff size went from 5 employees a day to 10 during the weekdays and even larger on the weekends.  As far as the day-to-day operations, the business structure has for the most part remained the same.  “We are a family business that is very much hands on,” Chad said. “My mother Robin, and I still work all aspects of the business from payroll, hiring, prepping, and drying, to equipment maintenance and cleaning the bathroom.  We are very much involved in all aspects of the business.”

While the technology in this field has changed a lot, Paradise has in large part not followed with the general direction that it is going.  “Most of the washes that are being redesigned and built are running on a model that allows for the owner to monitor everything off-site and takes a large percentage of the employees out of the equation.  They replace the hands-on, full-service features, and have the customer vacuum their own car, dry their own car, pay at an automated box, and have only 1 to 3 employees overseeing everything.  The owner can then adjust wash settings, monitor sales, view labor costs, and monitor customer purchases all through their phone without setting foot on the property,” Chad said.

“We always want to make sure that we provide a service that makes the customer happy.  They need to find a value in what they are paying for otherwise they will not continue to support the business.  I also feel that it is important to be hands on, as an owner, in this industry.  Selling a service versus a product is quite different.  The ability to put out a consistent service can be difficult when it comes to cars.  Some cars are full of dog hair.  Others have windows covered in smoke residue.  There are car owners that wash regularly and others that seldom do.  All these things play a part in putting out a good product.  I try to keep the mentality that every car that leaves here has my face associated with the job we did.   Therefore, I find it important to be here, be involved, talk to the customers, and get their feedback.” Perhaps this is one of the big reasons why Paradise enjoys such success and customer loyalty!

Chad was asked about the challenges and rewards of being a business owner. “When I am off work for the day, on vacation, even just sitting at home during closed hours at night, it is hard to turn off all the thoughts of what needs to be done at work.  Owning a business is a very personal thing and it at times has a very heavy impact on what should be my down time / family time.  Also, this is a very employee dependent business which makes it hard when there are 30 different personalities that all have their own lives.  People get sick, loved ones pass, employees quit, coworkers don’t always get along.  All these things pose a challenge in the workplace.” He then switched to the rewards and said, “I get to work with my mother, my kids, my family.  I get to set my schedule, implement change when I think it is needed.  I can work in the community that I live.  I have control over the creative direction that I want the company to take for the future.  The freedom of being able to guide your work life and see its success is rewarding.”

With his mom retiring in the next couple of years, he thinks the biggest change for Paradise will be “seeing if my kids decide if it is something that they want to do.  I am currently the third generation of my family to run a business in Yorkville.  It will be interesting to see if one of my kids decides to come on board as a future owner and become the fourth.”

Chad partnered with Yorkville Christian High School and art instructor John McDavitt to create a mural that would blanket the south side of Paradise Car Wash’s building. This was a great project for the students and gave Paradise a fresh new look! “I find it important to be involved with the community, schools, local groups, etc.  I grew up in Yorkville, my kids are growing up in Yorkville.  I feel that when businesses and the community that surrounds them can support each other, then it makes living in those areas that much nicer.  The mural that you guys painted was beautiful.  I am glad that the students painted it, and that they were showing off their school pride in doing so.  I hope that they are proud of what they did.  I get compliments all the time on it.”

Thank you to Chad Green and Paradise Car Wash for their time and support of Yorkville Christian High School and the Yorkville community as a whole!

FFA Week: Lunch

Yorkville Christian FFA Chapter had another successful National FFA Week. The week was filled with fun activities centered around agriculture education and awareness. As an amazing fundraiser the Yorkville Christian FFA Chapter served a cookout lunch Tuesday and Wednesday.  These lunches included your choice of a hotdog, hamburger, or cheeseburger; pop or water; chips; and a cookie. These lunches were prepared and served by our FFA Chapter. Every kid showed their hard work ethic and pitched in to help. We also had a huge turnout of kids buying these lunches to support us. We encourage you as families to join us next year for our FFA Cookout as we serve to-go orders too! Thank you to all the FFA members who assisted in serving these lunches!

National FFA Week- February 18-25

Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. It’s a time to share what FFA is and the impact it has on its members everyday.

What is FFA? FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth & career success through agricultural education. FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success!

How is FFA Unique?

  • FFA facilitates formative experiences altering the course of students’ lives for the better.
  • FFA is intracurricular and members must be enrolled in an agriculture education class.
  • FFA members develop the necessary skills to continue their education in college or to enter the workforce immediately.
  • FFA prepares members to be globally conscious of their community, their state, their country and their world.
  • FFA provides opportunities to demonstrate literacy, advocacy, and technical skills in agriculture, food & natural resources.

The Yorkville Christian FFA Officer Team planned many activities & dress up days to celebrate FFA Week. On Tuesday, students wore Blue & Gold attire. During lunch students were able to purchase a lunch made by Yorkville Christian FFA members. Wednesday, students wore either Country vs. Country Club attire. FFA Members Mason Bols, Payton Wallin & Dakota Bulson participated in the Drive Your Tractor to School Day! Thursday ended with the annual FFA Week Egg Toss with the entire school getting involved! FFA Officers Audrey Breen, Kloe Pottinger, & Ellie Stewart were interviewed by Chris Schwemlein from WSPY to bring awareness about FFA Week as well!

Thank you to all FFA members who worked hard to facilitate a fun week!

CLASSROOM CORNER

Geometry

Geometry students designed their own logos for their own unique company.  Students were studying symmetry and discovered how prominent line and point symmetry is in company logos.  This was a great lesson to reinforce these concepts to the students, while allowing students to use their creative talents.  Nice work, Mrs. Tickel.

Biblical Studies

Biblical Studies II and III classes, under the direction of Mrs. Liz Sovern, created Valentine’s Day cards for residents of local assisted living and long term care facilities.  Each student made their own personal card, and included Bible verses such as 1 John 4:19 – “We love because He first loved us” and Colossians 3:14 – “Above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”  The cards were delivered to the residents in time for Valentine’s Day, and were very special and meaningful blessings to the residents.  The lesson served as just another great opportunity for our students to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.

Biology

Biology students supported their understanding of cell metabolism (photosynthesis, aerobic respiration, and anaerobic respiration) by completing several activities including matching metabolism dominoes, experiencing aerobic respiration through clothespin finger exercises, and completing task card trivia questions.  The students enjoyed the activities Mrs. Schnyders put together, and they were great ways to reinforce the lesson by allowing the students to experience things firsthand.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt recently worked on a 3D shapes project.  Students had to highlight a light source, as well as reflective light, while showing the lightest, mid, and darkest shadow areas.

Introduction to Agriculture

Students in Mrs. Stewart’s Intro to Agriculture class recently completed a project where each student was asked to create a mini storage box.  The students were each given a piece of wood and were required to figure out the dimensions for each part of the box, measure the dimensions, cut the wood according to the proper dimensions, and then construct the box using a variety of tools including saws, hammers, nails, and clamps.  The students did a great job, and the project presented an excellent opportunity for students to use a variety of skills to create a finished product.

Biology

Biology students completed an Integumentary System Exhibition Lab as part of their Human Body Systems unit.  The lab strengthened student understanding of the amazing structure and function of the skin as well as how the body responds to damage and other skin problems.  Great job by Mrs. Schnyders and her students completing this lab.

Health

Health students recently completed stations in the six essential nutrients.  The activity, designed by Health teacher, Mrs. Schnyders, helped increase their understanding of carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water, and why they need to include all six of these nutrients in their diet.

Biblical Studies

On Friday, February 17, Biblical Studies instructors, Mrs. Sovern and Mr. Maxwell, arranged for a group of speakers from Cup of Cold Water Ministries to come speak to the Biblical Studies classes throughout the day.  The presentation was led by Mrs. Jennie Thompson, the Cup of Cold Water Ministries Next Generation Director.  Cup of Cold Water Ministries has operated out of Sheridan, IL since 1978.  The presentation started by the group sharing Jeremiah 1:7 with the students – “But the Lord said unto me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.”  The guests then gave each student an envelope and asked the students to pretend it was a letter from God and inside the envelope was a message from God telling each of them what He wanted him or her to do for the rest of their lives.  The speakers made the point that some Christians don’t even want to open the envelope, because they fear what God might want them to do.  The students opened the envelopes and read many examples of things that would completely take them out of their comfort zone such as serving in a war-torn country, taking the word of God across hostile borders, serving God in the military, and working at Aldi and having a family.  It was a powerful exercise to get the students thinking about answering the call of God for their lives.  The guests discussed the Great Commission with our students (Matthew 28: 16-20) and shared how even some of the disciples doubted at first and didn’t want to serve to spread the good news.  The guests shared with our students that there are currently 3 billion people in the world who haven’t had the opportunity to even hear about Jesus, and only 400,000 people going out and telling others about Jesus.  Also, only 2% of Christian’s money is going toward God’s work.  The guests made it very clear that our current students are missionaries even now!  The visit was a wonderful experience for our students and the Cup of Cold Water representatives shared some upcoming worship opportunities, service opportunities, and summer retreats with our students.

Trigonometry – Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Trigonometry used their creative skills to make polar snowflakes, while studying polar and trigonometric coordinates.

In December, Maddie McBride, a freshman at Yorkville Christian High School and a Minooka resident, was given the flyer and encouraged to apply for the program by her Hearing Itinerant, Sarah Spoerl. Spoerl has been McBride’s Deaf teacher for the last 3 years. “I am not in the least bit surprised she was accepted. I knew she would be an asset and a role model while continuing to build her natural leadership skills. I’m excited to see what God has in store for her!” said Spoerl.

In January, Procter and Gamble scheduled interviews with students from all over the country. McBride met with Procter and Gamble executive Scott Van Nice, Senior Manager at Procter & Gamble. Van Nice has a background in cybersecurity where he manages a global group of forensic analysts and serves as Procter & Gamble’s electronic discovery subject matter expert. McBride was thrilled to meet and talk with him about her experiences with cybersecurity at Argonne National Laboratory’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” last year.

On February 9th, McBride received an email from INTERalliance that said she had not been chosen for the tech training program, but that Procter & Gamble “felt you were ready for a full-time Summer INTERnship! Congratulations!”

As this is a selective, national program and Procter & Gamble is known for being a consumer goods giant, McBride kept her hopeful optimism in check, “I knew I was one of thousands of students applying and being a freshman that could have made me less likely to be chosen, but I knew that I couldn’t pass up this tremendous opportunity and prayed that I would be picked!”

The full-time Summer INTERnship will be June through August and is designed to give students experience in areas of IT, including software engineering, cybersecurity, project management, user experience, personal computing and data analytics.

Great job, Maddie!  Your Mustang family is very proud of you!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS AG SHADOW DAY

On Thursday, February 9, Yorkville Christian High School hosted an Ag Shadow Day.  Shadows from various schools came to experience a day in the life of a Mustang.  Shadow guests attended regular classes with their shadow hosts, but also attended various agriculture classes including Animal Science, Plant Biology, and Introduction to Ag.  Students also participated in a catered lunch with a question and answer session with Yorkville Christian’s FFA officers.  Shadow guests also attended chapel and completed a special project during our homeroom time.  The shadows were a part of various great lessons including a discussion of the various types of meat in Animal Science, where students learned about product development and created their own burger brand.  Students had to decide on what ingredients they were going to use in their burger, decide on a price point, and create an advertising campaign to market their new burger.  It was a very enjoyable lesson, which concluded with students enjoying a burger.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HOSTS MATH AND SCIENCE SHADOW DAY

Yorkville Christian High School hosted a Math and Science Shadow Day on Thursday, February 16.  The day consisted of several exciting activities including a Biology lesson where the students completed integumentary task cards to test their knowledge of their skin, as the students then dove deeper into their dermis layer by doing their own fingerprint analysis and analyzing its unique characteristics.  Shadows attended an Animal Science class where they learned all about the process and science behind “ear notching” of cows and pigs.  The shadows attended a chapel service and heard some very uplifting music from our Praise Band, as well as a great message from Pastor Steve Lombardo.  Following chapel, the shadows enjoyed a catered lunch and got to hear presentations from the Yorkville Christian math and science departments regarding class offerings and curriculum for our various math and science courses.  Shadows were given a period of time for a question and answer session with our math and science teachers as well.  The shadow guests spent the afternoon attending an Algebra class (learning some math concepts while enjoying some ice cream), visiting a few other classes, and then attended a Physical Science class and participated in a lab.  The day wrapped up with a special presentation from Dr. Hooper, physics teacher at Yorkville Christian and Lewis University, who spoke to the guests about the Honors Physics class.

Yorkville Christian Hosts Fine Arts Shadow Day

On Thursday, February 23, Yorkville Christian hosted a Fine Arts Shadow Day.  The date fell during the National FFA Week, so the shadows were treated to a delicious farm fresh breakfast upon their arrival.  After the wonderful breakfast, the students participated in a drawing class with our art teacher, Mr. John McDavitt.  The next stop for the shadows was a visit to Mr. Vester’s room for a lesson about film editing and podcast work.  The shadows were able to experiment with the actual equipment.  Shadow guests attended a guitar and piano class, and then went with their shadow hosts to a regular class followed by weekly chapel.  After chapel, the guests enjoyed a catered lunch, and a special question and answer time with all of our fine arts teachers, while hearing about the various music, art, and theater class that are offered at Yorkville Christian.  After lunch, the shadows attended a few classes with their hosts, and wrapped up the day with a special painting lesson, FFA spirit week festivities, and a “goodie bag.”  It was great to have our guests with us, and we look forward to them joining the Mustang family in the future.

We are going to offer a $250 discount per student to any family who enrolls in our middle school before January 31, 2023.

Here are the two steps to enroll:

1)  Complete the enrollment application which can be done using this link:

PLEASE share this exciting news and information with any families you know who might be interested, as we are definitely capping each class at 25 total students, so spots will fill up quickly.

Make Your Own Sunshine

As I write this article, outside it is one of those days that my dad would say, “make your own sunshine.”  January in Illinois is that kind of month on many days – cold, dreary, snowy, rainy, and football playoffs that are disappointing .  Along with my dad’s comment, he always added, “rain is needed, and God is our sunshine.”  Can you imagine as a kid…..I would roll my eyes and respond, “sure Dad.”  However, as I have matured (thankfully), “I get it.”

Whether cloudy or sunny, our lives are blessed.  Your students/grandchildren enjoy the freedom of being able to attend a Christian school where administration and staff provide a safe environment for your students to not only receive an education but also are encouraged to be catalysts for impacting God’s world as Christ-centered citizens.

Whether cloudy or sunny, Yorkville Christian High School is blessed.  We have dedicated, caring administration and staff that willingly work with your students to provide the tools and experiences necessary to empower them to be Christ-centered citizens.

Whether cloudy or sunny, Yorkville Christian High School is blessed and grateful.  We have dedicated, caring parents, grandparents, and friends who support us with prayers, attendance at events, and dollars.  An Annual Fund is year round, but the majority of donations appear in the fall/winter.  For 2022 we were blessed with positive response from our community who provided dollars for our Tuition Assistance Fund.  We are blessed with recurring and new donors whose lives have been empowered to be Christ-centered citizens, who wish to support with their dollars so that Christian education is available to Christian families who struggle financially.  Thank you!!!

Not had the opportunity to be a blessing?  How can I give?  Thanks to technology, there are several options available — online giving at yorkvillechristian.com, drop off at school, and US Postal Service are all available.

Whether cloudy or sunny, we can echo my dad’s words, “God is our sunshine.”  The January weather will flip flop between mild to cold, sunny to dreary, clear to snowy, but we all know that God is our sunshine.  He never changes, He is always present in our lives, He is forgiving, and He cares for each of us.

Thank you for supporting Yorkville Christian High School with your time, talents, and dollars.  It takes all of us – administration, staff, parents, grandparents, alumni, friends – working together and supporting one another to prepare our students for a life of Christian service.  We thank God for each of you.

National FFA Week will be February 21-24. The Yorkville Christian FFA Officer Team is busy planning the various activities such as dress-up days and the annual school-wide breakfast!

FFA members interested in competing at the Meat Evaluation CDE will begin practicing in the next few weeks. The contest will take place on March 1st. During this team event, students evaluate beef carcasses for quality and yield grade; identify various meat cuts and place carcasses; and identify wholesale and/or retail cuts.

FFA members interested in competing at the Public Speaking CDE will begin practicing the next few weeks. The contest will take place on March 11th. Students are able to choose from the following areas to compete in: Creed Speaking, Prepared, & Extemporaneous. Participants interested in Creed Speaking are expected to recite the FFA Creed from memory. They are then asked a series of questions to assess their understanding and knowledge of the Creed.  Participants interested in the Prepared Public Speaking will be involved in the selection of a topic, preparation of a written manuscript, delivery of a six- to eight minute oral presentation using a problem-solution style, and oral response to judges’ questions at the conclusion of the speech. The extemporaneous public speaking CDE format requires the participant to select a topic, prepare notes for a speech during a 20-minute period, give an oral presentation lasting a minimum of 3 minutes, and field questions from judges.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Geometry

Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry class used their knowledge of transformations to perform reflections, translations, and dilations using magazine pictures.  This was a fun and creative way to review these concepts.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students, under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt, recreated Monet’s Lily Pond painting to build color matching and composition skills.  The students did a great job with their work!

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students in Mr. McDavitt’s Introduction to Drawing and Painting completed their final semester projects.  Students were given an image that was a color breakdown of their final project as prep for matching color to reference.  Below are some photos of the students’ final projects.  The black and white hands are part of the final projects as well, as this part of the assessment focused on painting in values – shades (dark to light).  The students did an outstanding job!

Biology

Biology students, under the direction of Mrs. Schnyders, completed an “Egg Osmosis Lab” to gain a visual understanding of the selective permeability of a cell membrane.  After using a chemical reaction to dissolve the egg shell, students placed their eggs in various solutions (hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic), made predictions as to what would happen to the egg in each solution, and then documented their observations over the following days.  Students ended the lab by testing whether their shell-less eggs would “bounce” or “burst” when dropped.  It was a great learning activity for the students and provided an excellent visual learning tool.

Health and Wellness Class

Students in Mrs. Schnyder’s Health class learned their blood types through the use of the Eldon Blood Typing Kit.  This activity increased their personal health knowledge and was a final step toward their graduation from Health and Wellness class!

English 3

English 3 students, under the direction of Ms. Alyssa Taglia, practiced giving presentations by rotating around a horseshoe and giving their presentations one on one three different times in preparation for their final presentation of the semester.  It was a fun lesson and provided an excellent opportunity for each student to gain valuable experience in preparation for their class presentations.

We are going to offer a $250 discount per student to any family who enrolls in our middle school before January 31, 2023.

Here are the two steps to enroll:

1)  Complete the enrollment application which can be done using this link:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/enrollment/

2)  Families will need to make a $600 tuition down payment, which will be subtracted from the overall tuition cost of $8500 (or $8250 with the early discount).  The payment can be made securely using this link or a check can be dropped off at the school office (checks payable to Yorkville Christian High School).  Here is the link for tuition down payment:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/product/enrollment-fees/

PLEASE share this exciting news and information with any families you know who might be interested, as we are definitely capping each class at 25 total students, so spots will fill up quickly.

We are so excited God is moving us in this direction, and we cannot wait to see His plan moving forward with this middle school.  To God be the Glory!

Yorkville Christian Hosts Fine Arts Shadow Day

On Thursday, December 1, Yorkville Christian High School hosted a Fine Arts Shadow Day.  Twelve students from nine different middle schools joined us for an exciting day.  The shadows started their day with a drawing class led by Yorkville Christian High School art teacher, Mr. John McDavitt.  The shadow guests worked on drawing some basic objects and shading.  Shadow guests then attended a few classes with their shadow hosts, and also attended our piano and guitar classes.  Our guests were able to attend chapel and enjoyed a catered lunch where they were able to ask questions of our music, art, and theater teachers.  In the afternoon, the shadow guests attended a few other classes with their hosts, and finished the day with a painting lesson with Mr. McDavitt.  It was a day packed full of exciting and fun activities, and some great learning experiences.  Thank you to all the shadows who joined us and to our Fine Arts teachers for their help making the day special.

Yorkville Christian Hosts Agriculture Shadow Day

On Thursday, December 8, Yorkville Christian High School hosted an Agriculture Shadow Day.  Twelve shadow guests from eight different middle schools joined us for the event.  The day consisted of many exciting activities including attending core classes with their shadow hosts; attending an Intro to Agriculture class where the students made ice cream; attending chapel; a catered lunch with the Yorkville Christian FFA officers for a question-and-answer time regarding Ag classes and our FFA chapter; attending our Animal Science class where the students participated in various food testing exercises; and an Ag Entrepreneurship class where students learned about the business side of agriculture.  It was a fantastic day, and our guests really enjoyed their day, and we enjoyed hosting them.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Chemistry

The Yorkville Christian High School Chemistry 1 classes recently completed an experiment that tested the PH levels of eleven different household products including table salt, lemonade, baking soda, milk of magnesia, etc. to see if the products were acidic or base.  Students predicted what the acidic levels and base levels would be and then found out which products had the strongest acidic content and the which ones had the strongest base content.  The students also looked for common characteristics with the products.  It was a great hands-on learning experiment used by our Chemistry teacher, Mr. Greg Spears.

Biology

Biology students recently completed labs on macromolecules – carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and nucleus acids to further their understanding of each of these biomolecules and how essential they are to life.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students in Mr. John McDavitt’s Introduction to Drawing and Painting classes recently completed a Southwestern theme painting assignment.  The students were given a reference photo and then were asked to sketch the picture first and then paint the photo.  The students completed some amazing paintings, as some of the samples are shared below.  Great job students!

Honors Sports Management

On Thursday, December 8, the Yorkville Christian High School Honors Sports Management class under the direction of Mr. Aaron Sovern, experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity, as the entire class traveled to Milwaukee to spend time with Mr. Jon Horst, the General Manager of the NBA Milwaukee Bucks.  The was treated to a tour of the facility and a question-and-answer session with Mr. Horst.  It was an amazing trip for our students.  Special thanks to Mr. Sovern for arranging the trip, and to Mr. Horst for his extreme generosity with his time.

Piano Class

The Yorkville Christian High School Piano Class, under the instruction of Mrs. Christy Motley, has been learning a variety of Christmas songs to play during the Christmas holiday.   The students have made tremendous strides throughout the semester learning how to play the piano.

Health and Wellness

the Health and Wellness classes recently completed a unit on Cycling/Road Safety.  The Health classes at Yorkville Christian are taught by Mrs. Laura Schnyders and Mr. Earl Ashmore.  Mrs. Schnyders led a detailed discussion with the students about cycling and road safety.  This is an issue that is very close to her heart, as last year she lost her sister, a professional cyclist, who was struck and killed while riding her bike on a bike path by an impaired driver.  The students enjoyed learning about the many health advantages of cycling, and also the importance of road safety.

Honors Physics

Students in Dr. Hooper’s Honors Physics class gave presentations regarding their favorite person who impacted the world of physics.  Each student had to present on the background of their person; what impact he or she had on the world of physics; and what was something new they learned about them.   The students had to present for eight minutes or more, and then face a panel for additional questions.  The format was set up to simulate what it would be like to present at a conference.  The students did a great job!

Spanish 1

Spanish 1 classes, under the direction of Mrs. Bridget Aguado, recently completed a group project where students had to create a skit pretending they were in a restaurant ordering a meal.  The students had to create a menu; order a meal for everyone in their party; and then pretend something went wrong.  In addition, each group had to actually create one of the food items from their menu for the rest of the class to taste and sample.  The students did a great job, and it was a great real-life learning experience for the students.
