YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN TO OFFER MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FALL OF 2023

After years of prayer and discussion, the Yorkville Christian School Board in December approved the start of a 7th and 8th grade middle school at Yorkville Christian.  The middle school will start in the Fall of 2023.  The 7th grade class will be capped at 25 students, and the 8th grade class will be capped at 25 students.   Yorkville Christian Middle School will offer sports — girls volleyball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, soccer, and track for now.  The tuition will be $8500 a year per student, and because of the limited enrollment spots, we will not be offering tuition assistance for the middle school; however, there will be a multiple student discount of $2000, if a family has two students in the middle school or a student in the middle school and another in the high school.  The middle school students will be offered a full variety of classes including electives, and will have a special wing of the building, but will be switching classes, participating in chapel, and eating lunch in the school cafeteria, and participating in PE classes in our Canyon gymnasium. We will have a special staff of teachers we will be hiring to teach the middle school students.   We are going to offer a $250 discount per student to any family who enrolls in our middle school before January 31, 2023.

Here are the two steps to enroll:

1)  Complete the enrollment application which can be done using this link:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/enrollment/

2)  Families will need to make a $600 tuition down payment, which will be subtracted from the overall tuition cost of $8500 (or $8250 with the early discount).  The payment can be made securely using this link or a check can be dropped off at the school office (checks payable to Yorkville Christian High School).  Here is the link for tuition down payment:

https://yorkvillechristian.com/product/enrollment-fees/

PLEASE share this exciting news and information with any families you know who might be interested, as we are definitely capping each class at 25 total students, so spots will fill up quickly.

We are so excited God is moving us in this direction, and we cannot wait to see His plan moving forward with this middle school.  To God be the Glory!

Yorkville Christian Hosts Fine Arts Shadow Day

On Thursday, December 1, Yorkville Christian High School hosted a Fine Arts Shadow Day.  Twelve students from nine different middle schools joined us for an exciting day.  The shadows started their day with a drawing class led by Yorkville Christian High School art teacher, Mr. John McDavitt.  The shadow guests worked on drawing some basic objects and shading.  Shadow guests then attended a few classes with their shadow hosts, and also attended our piano and guitar classes.  Our guests were able to attend chapel and enjoyed a catered lunch where they were able to ask questions of our music, art, and theater teachers.  In the afternoon, the shadow guests attended a few other classes with their hosts, and finished the day with a painting lesson with Mr. McDavitt.  It was a day packed full of exciting and fun activities, and some great learning experiences.  Thank you to all the shadows who joined us and to our Fine Arts teachers for their help making the day special.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Chemistry

The Yorkville Christian High School Chemistry 1 classes recently completed an experiment that tested the PH levels of eleven different household products including table salt, lemonade, baking soda, milk of magnesia, etc. to see if the products were acidic or base.  Students predicted what the acidic levels and base levels would be and then found out which products had the strongest acidic content and the which ones had the strongest base content.  The students also looked for common characteristics with the products.  It was a great hands-on learning experiment used by our Chemistry teacher, Mr. Greg Spears.

Biology

Biology students recently completed labs on macromolecules – carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and nucleus acids to further their understanding of each of these biomolecules and how essential they are to life.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Students in Mr. John McDavitt’s Introduction to Drawing and Painting classes recently completed a Southwestern theme painting assignment.  The students were given a reference photo and then were asked to sketch the picture first and then paint the photo.  The students completed some amazing paintings, as some of the samples are shared below.  Great job students!

Honors Sports Management

On Thursday, December 8, the Yorkville Christian High School Honors Sports Management class under the direction of Mr. Aaron Sovern, experienced a once in a lifetime opportunity, as the entire class traveled to Milwaukee to spend time with Mr. Jon Horst, the General Manager of the NBA Milwaukee Bucks.  The was treated to a tour of the facility and a question-and-answer session with Mr. Horst.  It was an amazing trip for our students.  Special thanks to Mr. Sovern for arranging the trip, and to Mr. Horst for his extreme generosity with his time.

Piano Class

The Yorkville Christian High School Piano Class, under the instruction of Mrs. Christy Motley, has been learning a variety of Christmas songs to play during the Christmas holiday.   The students have made tremendous strides throughout the semester learning how to play the piano.

Health and Wellness

the Health and Wellness classes recently completed a unit on Cycling/Road Safety.  The Health classes at Yorkville Christian are taught by Mrs. Laura Schnyders and Mr. Earl Ashmore.  Mrs. Schnyders led a detailed discussion with the students about cycling and road safety.  This is an issue that is very close to her heart, as last year she lost her sister, a professional cyclist, who was struck and killed while riding her bike on a bike path by an impaired driver.  The students enjoyed learning about the many health advantages of cycling, and also the importance of road safety.

Honors Physics

Students in Dr. Hooper’s Honors Physics class gave presentations regarding their favorite person who impacted the world of physics.  Each student had to present on the background of their person; what impact he or she had on the world of physics; and what was something new they learned about them.   The students had to present for eight minutes or more, and then face a panel for additional questions.  The format was set up to simulate what it would be like to present at a conference.  The students did a great job!

Spanish 1

Spanish 1 classes, under the direction of Mrs. Bridget Aguado, recently completed a group project where students had to create a skit pretending they were in a restaurant ordering a meal.  The students had to create a menu; order a meal for everyone in their party; and then pretend something went wrong.  In addition, each group had to actually create one of the food items from their menu for the rest of the class to taste and sample.  The students did a great job, and it was a great real-life learning experience for the students.

Tomorrow Memories

“Today’s holidays are tomorrow memories.”  You most likely have heard this particular statement on television from Flo of Progressive Insurance.  Generally, I find ads annoying, and/or I do not even know what product is being showcased.  This particular ad I have obviously heard more than once; yet, last week when I heard it, I paused to think about the upcoming Christmas season, our family, and the memories being created.

As your family gathers this Christmas season, encourage your Yorkville Christian student/grandchild to share how his or her life is being impacted each and every school day.  Our all-encompassing mission statement is to energize, educate, and empower our students to impact their world for Christ.  How are we doing?

You, then in turn, share God’s blessings in your life.  This simple sharing of everyday school experiences and life experiences as well as our faith are priceless memories to be recalled for many years ahead.

We as a school thank you for sharing your student with us.  Our staff is delighted to witness the growth of each student, not only academically, but also in each student’s Christian life and service.

Thank you also for lifting up our Board, staff, and students in your prayers.  Thank you for your presence at events encouraging our students at every turn.  Thank you for your financial support through the Annual Fund.  If you have not yet participated in the Annual Fund, we encourage you to prayerfully consider a gift this yearend…all dollars, no matter the amount, are significant and appreciated as those dollars provide tuition assistance where needed.

Have a blessed Christmas and remember…this season consciously create life-long “tomorrow” memories for all to recall.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Health Class

the Yorkville Christian High School Health classes, under the direction of Mrs. Laura Schnyders and Mr. Earl Ashmore, recently invited Mr. Randy Roberts, Fire Inspector for the Bristol Kendall Fire Department, as a guest speaker to talk to the Health classes.  Mr. Roberts shared the Bristol Kendall Fire Department’s impactful “Stop the Bleed/CPR” program with the students.  The information shared with the students was excellent, and the students really enjoyed the life-saving presentation.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

Art students under the instruction of Mr. John McDavitt, recently completed a Drawing Grid project.  Students learned how to use a grid to accurately copy and shade a drawing based on a photo reference.  The students worked with a theme of eyes and another theme of elephants.  The students did a great job, and the final products were amazing.

Life Skills

Having already tackled the basics of personal finance (banking, saving, financing, and life after high school, to name a few), the LIFE SKILLS class, under the direction of Mr. Mike Vester, learned the basics of auto maintenance and auto emergencies. The class has also been working on calculating the costs for feeding themselves for a week to determine the shopping list, menu planning, cost per item needed, and rationing of items on hand. This is designed to help them recognize the growing costs in grocery stores and how to find ways to save.

The students also learned about investment planning and opened mock E-trading accounts that allowed them to research and buy and sell stocks, bonds, and commodities. Students also learned about employer sponsored and self-driven IRA/Mutual Fund accounts.   These opportunities provide GREAT life experiences for our students!

Speech Class

Students delivered speeches on their Persuasive Speeches tackling topics such as men and women wage gaps, the use of PEDs and drug testing in sports, the recognition of our high power, retail therapy, the dangers of oceans, and many more! Students will also be honing their skills to deliver brief “how to” speeches and will lead to the preparation of a 20 minute group presentation toward the end of the semester.  Our speech classes are also under the direction of Mr. Mike Vester.

Geometry

Geometry students reinforced the concepts of transversals and the angles they form with parallel lines by completing a “GeoTown” project.  Some of the towns students created included Thanksgiving Town, NFL Town, Candy Town, Musicals Town, and Hawaiian Town.  Students learned the relationships between alternate interior and exterior angles, corresponding angles, vertical angles, and same side interior and exterior angles.

Students in Intro to Drawing and Painting recently started the painting part of the course with a very fundamental activity focusing on primary and secondary colors.  Students were asked to paint triangles using a mix of primary and secondary colors.  The Intro to Drawing and Painting Class is taught by Mr. John McDavitt.

Media Writing Class

Students learned the basics of journalism and news article writing and have been writing non-stop over the past month. Writing assignments have included restaurant reviews, product comparisons for consumers, career interviewing, and general news coverage. Now students will be interviewing sponsors of the Yorkville Christian High School Canyon to do feature stories on the businesses who support us! This will involve research and background workups and the preparation of interview questions with subsequent interviews to gather content. Final projects in Media Writing have also begun. Students will cover 10 different writing “beats” and develop two articles for each beat that will be posted in a digital presentation repository that they can use as a project portfolio moving forward.  Special thanks to Mr. Mike Vester, who teaches our Media Writing class.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry students recently completed a research project on how Trigonometry, namely Sinusoidal Graphs are used in the real world.  Some of the topics included Rollercoasters, Tsunamis, Electrical Currents, Music, Ocean Tides, and Earthquakes.  The students did a great job and the visuals were outstanding.

English 1

English 1 students recently completed the reading of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” under the direction of Ms. Taglia.  Part of the process of reading the book included group readings, where students would read aloud in small groups.  This served as a great change of pace for students as they read the book.

Biology

Biology students recently completed two “Chemistry in Biology” labs to solidify their understanding of chemical bonds and chemical reactions:  The “Frixion Pen Lab” and the “Gummy Bear Bonds Lab”.  In the Frixion Pen Lab, students used a heat source to break the bonds of the Frixion Pen ink (making the ink disappear) and then reformed those bonds with a cold source (making the ink reappear).  In the Gummy Bear Lab, students built models of various elements and compounds using the correct number and placement of gummy bears (the “atoms”) and toothpicks (the “bonds”). The hardest part of the lab was waiting to eat the Gummy Bears until the lab was completed!  Special thanks to Biology teachers, Mrs. Laura Schnyders, for designing the great lessons.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND NATIONAL FFA CONVENTION

21 students from the Yorkville Christian FFA Chapter attended the FFA National Convention the week of October 25-28 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Over 65,000 members, advisors, and special guests were in attendance this year.  The first stop on the trip was an Agri-tour to learn about pressing apple cider and running a family farm business at Stuckey’s Family Farm in Sheridan, Indiana. Stuckey’s Family Farm is a working orchard and farm that welcomes guests. A guest can pick from 38 varieties of apples from 5,000 trees, take a wagon ride through the orchard, watch cider being pressed, and even enjoy a picnic. They also have a huge play area called “Adventure Acres” that includes a 60-foot slide. This stop was just the first of many adventures during the week for our Yorkville Christian High School FFA students.  At the convention, our students had the honor of listening to the keynote speaker, former WNBA star, Tamika Catchings; attended student leadership workshops; had the opportunity to network with FFA members from around the nation; and experienced a team bonding activity at Top Golf.

Mission Advancement News

“…You Hold the Pen”

Last month Yorkville Christian High School held another “first” – our students and staff hosted 91 grandparents at our first-ever Grandparents’ Day.  As a long time Christian educator and now a grandparent, I consider it one of the highlights of a school year.

The day, from start to finish, was centered around relationships, especially, between grandparents and grandchildren but also the school building a relationship with the grandparents.  This community building is all about creating a legacy.

Then, what is a legacy?  Many times, and rightfully so, it refers to our financial gifting through wills and estates.  However, one author’s definition of legacy is “a story about “you” to be written but “you” hold the pen.”

Grandparents’ Day was definitely a legacy “moment” and all about writing a story.   It provided grandchildren the opportunity to further experience the caring and love that grandparents have in their relationship with them.   Plus, an added bonus is that it planted a seed in their parents’ minds for future reference when they have grandchildren.

What is your story that you are writing?  What legacy are you “writing” that will be passed on to the next generation.    Does your story include:

  • Special time, events, dinners, etc., with your children/grandchildren?
  • Sharing your love of Christ?
  • Serving others?
  • Fiscal responsibility?
  • Well designed wills and/or estate plans?
  • Quiet moments of prayer?
  • Laughter in appreciating one another?

You do not have to wait until you are grandparent to create a legacy; it is an every day process….so start today.  The upcoming holiday season is a great time to “write your story” even in small ways creating memories for generations to come.  Remember….you “hold the pen.”

Thank you to all grandparents who joined us for the day; your grandchildren were thrilled.  Our staff was impressed with your caring and love.  A fun day for all.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Connie Brott

Director of Mission Advancement

Parent Ambassador Update

YCHS Parent Ambassadors are a group of parents who have hearts to serve the school, teachers and staff with their time, resources and/or talents. This vital group knows the importance of parent involvement at YCHS by lending an extra set of hands to our dedicated staff who give abundantly of their own time, funds and other resources. Parent Ambassadors compliment the mission of YCHS – Energize, Educate and Impact the World!

We would like to thank our Parent Ambassadors who served at our most recent events:

  • The MANY PAs who donated food items (and some gave financially) for the Grandparent’s Day Lunch and the MANY PAs who served that day for both breakfast and lunch, as well as helped with set-up and tear-down
  • Those PAs who shared about YCHS 1st Annual Trunk or Treat by word-of-mouth, flyers and on social media, and to those who hosted trunks at this very busy event
  • Those PAs who shared about our Open House by word-of-mouth, flyers and on social media, and to those who volunteered that day and helped prep materials for Mr. Tim Schnyders

To be a part of this servant group, aside from attending just a few meetings per year, parents are asked to participate in at least two of these:

  • Help promote the school in person, through flyers and social media, but most importantly, personal invitation (*all Parent Ambassadors are asked to help with this)
  • Volunteer time or resources at various events throughout the year
  • Help acquire gift cards or prizes for certain events

Again, parents aren’t asked to do it all, just to be aware of what’s in your toolbox and help in those ways.

Please contact Mrs. Janine McDavitt (Parent Ambassador Coordinator) by emailing her at jamcdavitt@yahoo.com to sign up to receive Parent Ambassador communications or assist with any events or YCHS needs.

Yorkville Christian Grandparents Day

On Thursday, October 13, Yorkville Christian High School hosted its first ever Grandparents Day.  91 grandparents joined us for this special day.  The day started with a breakfast for all of our guests in the chapel.  During breakfast, the grandparents were able to spend some time with their grandchildren before school started, and then once the students left to attend their first hour class, the grandparents listened to a short presentation from Yorkville Christian High School Director of Mission Advancement, Mrs. Connie Brott, about our Yorkville Christian High School Annual Fund.  The grandparents were also introduced to our school founder, Mrs. Michelle Stewart, and our administrative team including Mr. Fred Versluys and Mr. Aaron Sovern.

Following a wonderful breakfast (a special thanks to Heartland Bank for their generous donation of donuts for the event), the grandparents and our entire student body entered the chapel for a special chapel service led by Rev. Gerald Erffmeyer.  Rev. Erffmeyer is the the grandfather of a Yorkville Christian alum, Micah Schnyders, and the father of current Yorkville Christian High School teacher, Mrs. Laura Schnyders.  Rev. Erffmeyer emphasized to our guests and students how God has a special plan for each of our lives, and for all of our students to never underestimate the impact they can have on others with the path God leads them to later in their lives.

At the conclusion of our chapel time, our grandparents had the opportunity to attend second- and third-hour classes with their grandchildren.  This was a very special time, as grandparents were able to get a firsthand view of the classes the students attend on a daily basis, as well as meet their teachers.  Our teachers had some wonderful activities planned to allow our grandparents to interact with their grandchildren during the classes.

After spending some quality time in the classroom with their grandchildren, the grandparents and their students headed back to the chapel for a wonderful lunch provided by our Parent Ambassadors.  This was a great time of fun and fellowship, where the grandparents were able to eat with their grandchildren and catch up and share a few stories and laughs.  We also had a few contests and lucky winners of a few homemade pies.  One of the contests was to see whose grandparents had traveled the furthest distance to join us for Grandparents Day.  We had grandparents from Michigan, Indiana, Minnesota, and Oklahoma, but our winner was from Spokane, Washington!

Grandparents Day 2022 was an incredible experience for our entire Yorkville Christian High School community!  The teachers, students, parents, and grandparents were so touched by what a wonderful day God blessed us with at Yorkville Christian.  We would like to really thank all of the grandparents who joined us for this special day!  It will definitely be an annual event.  Also, special thanks to our Parent Ambassadors, who did so much work behind the scenes to prepare for the day and provide the wonderful lunch for our guests.  Also, a special thanks to our staff for all of their efforts to make the day special for our guests, and a special thank you to our student volunteers who helped with everything from parking to registration to make the day special.  A wonderful time was had by all, and we were once again reminded how faithful God is to all generations.  To God be the glory!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS FIRST EVER “TRUNK-OR-TREAT” EVENT

On Saturday, October 22, Yorkville Christian High School hosted its first ever “Trunk-or-Treat” event.  God blessed the event with wonderful weather, and an incredible turnout, as over 1,200 people joined us for the day.  The event featured over 70 “trunks” and a special “touch-a-truck” section which included a large crane truck hosted by Mr. Don Voitik; fire trucks, an ambulance, and police cars; a tow truck and semi just to name a few.  Shine.FM radio station also joined us for the day, and brought their tiger mascot with them.  The event also featured FREE Culvers custard (Culvers of Yorkville), Rosati’s pizza, Ayala food truck, and free popcorn from Heartland Bank.  Special thanks to all our trunks who joined us for the day, as well as our FFA and Student Leadership students who helped with our large petting zoo, selling refreshments, and directing parking (which was NOT an easy job with 1,200 people in attendance).  Thank you to our Yorkville Christian athletes who represented our various sports at the event.  We also want to thank all of the trick-or-treaters who came out to the event.  We are very excited to host the event again next year!

Yorkville Christian High School Hosts Open House

On Sunday, October 23, Yorkville Christian High School hosted its annual Open House for prospective families.  The Open House is an excellent opportunity for Yorkville Christian High School to share all the wonderful things God is doing in our school community.  Families were able to attend a variety of short sectionals covering such topics as spiritual growth, academics, technology, athletics, activities, student services, sports performance, tuition assistance, and much more.  There was also an Athletics and Activities Fair in The Canyon for all families interested in sports and clubs.  Refreshments were served, and prospective students had an opportunity to register for upcoming shadow day.  Yorkville Christian High School was extremely blessed to have 68 families participate in the day’s activities.  We will be praying for all of these families, as they make their high school decision.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

The Intro to Drawing and Painting Class, under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt, recently used shading techniques they learned earlier in the year to create 3-D shapes.  After completing the assignment, the students critiqued each student’s work as a class to give valuable feedback.  Here are some samples of the students’ work.  They did an amazing job.

ALGEBRA 1

Mrs. Tickel’s Algebra 1 class recently completed a class activity where the students went to the Canyon Gymnasium to become human matrices to practice their matrix addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication.  The students enjoyed the activity and it was a great way for them to visualize the concepts being taught.

Animal Science 2

Students in Animal Science 2 presented on various breeds of sheep and goats.  The students included information such as the history and origin of the breeds, conformation, color, and size of their specific breeds as well as the specific uses for their specific breeds.  The students did a great job, and their teacher, Mrs. Wiesbrook, provided them with a great learning experience.

Introduction to Agriculture

Intro to Ag students recently painted original works for display in our Agriculture Hall of Fame.  After researching American commodities and specialty crops, each student chose a favorite and made a creative painting to be displayed along with a description, some fun facts, and a bible verse connection.  Students also developed an educational children’s story book about their Commodity or Specialty Crop.  The books were a creative expression of the process of the crops getting from the farm fields to their family’s tables.  Introduction to Agriculture is taught by Mrs. Stewart.  Special thanks to her for providing such a wonderful learning experience for your students.

Trigonometry

Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Trigonometry class recently worked to memorize their unit circle.  They created their own creative unit circles showing identities of the circle and how the coordinates for each angle measure are derived from special right triangles.  The students did a great job, and the creations served as a great reminder for the students.  Great job class!

Health

The Health class under the direction of Mrs. Schnyders, recently dissected pig hearts as part of their unit on the circulatory system and heart health.  The activity was a wonderful hands-on learning activity for the students.

2ND ANNUAL YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL TRIVIA NIGHT

On Saturday, September 24, Yorkville Christian High School hosted the 2nd Annual Trivia Night in the school chapel.  25 teams registered for the event, and 170 people joined us for a great night of fun, fellowship, and food.  Congratulations to our teams that finished in the top 3 – 3rd place –“We Thought This Was Speed Dating”; 2nd place – “D Nasty”; and our champions, “Huh?” who walked away with the grand prize valued at $3,000!  Special thanks to all of the participants who joined us.  It was so great seeing current families, families from the community, staff members, alumni, and many others join us for this event.  A very special thank you to Mr. Fred Jacobeit and Mr. Bob Kauffman for running the event for us.   Mark your calendars for Trivia Night again next year in September!

Several Yorkville Christian High School athletes joined Director of Outreach and Enrollment, Mr. Schnyders, and School Administrator, Mr. Sovern, the week of October 17-21 for “High Five” appearances at local feeder schools.  Mr. Schnyders and Mr. Sovern brought a variety of athletes throughout the week to Bethany Lutheran School, St. Paul Lutheran School, Cross Lutheran School, and Trinity Christian School.  Yorkville Christian High School athletes gave students a high five on their way into the building, and Mr. Schnyders reminded families about our Yorkville Christian High School Open House and Trunk-or-Treat events that weekend.  It was a great experience for the feeder school students, but also for our athletes, and a great way for Yorkville Christian to continue to get out into the community.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION CEREMONY

On Monday, October 17, Yorkville Christian High School held its National Honor Society Induction Ceremony in the school chapel.  The National Honor Society is a national organization dedicated to students of strong excellence/scholarship, character, leadership and service.  When an application is completed, school administration looks closely at the student to see if they consistently exemplify these traits and live their lives in a way that exemplifies the principles of the National Honor Society.  All inductees must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher for the current year and uphold high character standards while recognizing themselves as servant-leaders in the school.  These requirements are reviewed by the Yorkville Christian High School faculty at the end of each semester.  This year, six new members were inducted into the Yorkville Christian High School National Honor Society.  The new inductees included Mason Bols, Kaelia Fox, Cody Hazzard, Mikayla Highland, Sofia Loffredi, and Riley Stuck.  Special thanks to the National Honor Society Director, Mr. Fred Versluys, and to the guest speaker for the event, Yorkville Christian High School teacher, Mr. Ramon Diaz.

Summer Happenings

Yorkville Christian High School was a VERY busy place this summer.  It seemed like every week there was some event taking place.  Here is a little recap of the exciting things that took place at Yorkville Christian High School.

During the week of June 6-10, Yorkville Christian High School hosted the “Monumental Vacation Bible School”.  This was a huge success as approximately 60 children attended.  It was a week packed full with guests (Pharaoh seemed to be everyone’s favorite), Bible stories to teach our students more about God, super fun activities, and even a petting zoo and snow cones!  Special thanks to all the volunteers who made the event possible, and a very special thanks to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook who planned and coordinated the entire week.  Great job!  We cannot wait to see everyone again next summer!

The Mustang Basketball Camp was held the week of June 13-16 at Yorkville Christian High School.  Over 80 boys and girls attended the camp and spent the week having a great deal of fun, while learning the fundamentals of the game.  Special thanks to Coach Sovern, as well as his current and some former players who helped run the camp.  It was a huge success, and we look forward to seeing everyone at camp again next summer!

Three Yorkville Christian High School students, Peyton Loomis, Halana Cejka, and Audrey Breen, attended the Illinois FFA Convention the week of June 13-16.  The girls had a fantastic time at this event, and learned a great deal that they will be able to share to help make our Yorkville Christian High School FFA Chapter even better than it already is.

Coach Dario Ayala and Coach Danette Bulson held their Mustang Soccer Camp the week of June 20-23 at Yorkville Christian High School.  Soccer is a newer sport at Yorkville Christian High School, so it was great to see so many new players come out and brave the extremely hot temperatures (the temperature was in the upper 90’s all week at camp) to learn more about the Mustang soccer program.  The coaches did a great job with the camp and the players really improved in the short amount of time at the camp.

Yorkville Christian High School installed some new school signage to the building over the summer.  One set of signs is visible for visitors entering from Ashley Drive, and the other set of signs is visible for guests entering from Whitekirk Lane.  The new signs turned out great and really help our continuing effort to market our school, and make guests feel welcome.  We also installed signs above our Canyon gymnasium entrances and our driveway.  Special thanks to Print Source Graphics for their great work with this project!

The Yorkville Christian High School Art Club, under the direction of Mr. John McDavitt, spent the second semester of the school year creating a mural for Paradise Car Wash in Yorkville.  After months of hard work, the mural was completed just before summer break and installed at the end of June at Paradise Car Wash.  Here are some photos of the finished project.  Special thanks to Mr. Chad Green, owner of Paradise Car Wash, for providing such an incredible opportunity for our students.  Also, a special thanks to Mr. McDavitt and the Art Club students for all their hard work on this project.  Great job Mustangs!

On Monday, July 4, a large contingent of Yorkville Christian High School staff members, students, and parents participated in the Yorkville 4th of July parade.  Yorkville Christian decorated a float, and distributed school informational flyers and some nice giveaways to the very large crowd who attended the event.  This parade is always one of the highlights of the summer, and a great public relations opportunity for our school.  Thank you to all those who attended the event to represent our school.  We appreciate your support!

Coach Sovern hosted his annual Hustle Basketball Camp from July 11-15. Over 100 campers attended the camp.  The camp was a great combination of basketball fundamentals and fun.  Several Mustang alumni helped work that camp, so it was nice to welcome back some former players.  The camp was a huge success again, and we look forward to hosting it again next year.

On Saturday, July 16, the Mustang Volleyball Clinic, under the direction of new varsity coach, Jordan Albarran, was held at Yorkville Christian High School.  Participants learned the fundamentals of the game, as they participated in a variety of drills covering several different facets of the game.  The participants really enjoyed the experience, and it was a great event.

The Yorkville Christian High School girls varsity volleyball team participated in the Joliet Junior College Summer Tournament the weekend of July 22-23.  The team played for the first time under the direction of new head coach, Jordan Albarran, and played extremely well.  In fact, the team went a perfect 7-0 over the weekend and didn’t lose a single set on their way to the championship!  Congratulations girls!

The Jason Otter Basketball Camp invaded “The Canyon” during the week of July 25-28.  Over 60 campers from around the country participated in the nine hour a day camp.  This week provides a great opportunity to share the mission of our school with not only local families, but families from around the country.  It is a great event and a very busy week of basketball!

Yorkville Christian High School alum, Maggie Stewart, placed in the top 5 in two rounds and finished third in the world in Breakaway Roping at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Wyoming at the end of July.  Congratulations Maggie!  Great job!

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling program hosted a wrestling camp for boys entering grades K-8 from July 28-30.  The camp offered an opportunity for our current Mustang wrestlers to help the next generation of wrestlers, as a majority of the current team and a few alumni helped work the camp.  The camp was a huge success, and Coach Vester and his staff loved working with the youth who attended the camp.

The Yorkville Christian High School staff attended the Global Leadership Summit on August 4-5 at Spirit Farms, which hosted the Summit as a satellite site.  The Summit was a tremendous experience for our staff members, as the staff was able to listen to incredible speakers from around the world, including such global leaders as Lynsi Snyder (CEO of In-N-Out Burger), Ron Howard (Academy Award Winning Actor and Producer), and Jon Acuff (New York Times Best Selling Author).  The Summit provided great insight for our staff members, and served as a wonderful motivational tool for our staff for the upcoming school year.

Yorkville Christian High School hosted the 2nd Annual Hoops 4 Hunger Basketball Camp on Saturday, August 6.  The camp was for boys and girls entering grades 6-12, and was run by former Mustang, Micah Schnyders.  The camp was once again a huge success as 89 campers attended and a tremendous amount of food items was collected for a local organization called “All God’s People.”  This organization feeds the homeless in Chicago every weekend, and the food items were desperately needed.  Special thanks to the coaches who volunteered their time to help make the camp a success, and to special guest, former Chicago Bulls star Craig Hodges, for making an appearance.  We cannot wait to run the camp again next year.

On August 16, Yorkville Christian High School FFA members Kloe Pottinger, Brant Tunnell, Halana Cejka, Kennedy Cargola, Emma Reinke, and Ali Gajewski attended Agriculture Day at the Illinois State Fair.  Some of the highlights of the day were the Illinois FFA petting zoo, the Illinois Department of Agriculture tent, the Swine Open Show, the Draft Horses Show and visiting Conservation World.  It was a great learning experience for our students.  Special thanks to Agriculture teacher, Mrs. Blair Wiesbrook, for taking the students to the event.

Parent Ambassadors compliment the mission of YCHS – Energize, Educate and Impact the World!

volunteer time or resources at various events throughout the year

help acquire gift cards or prizes for certain events

attend a few meetings per year

Again, parents aren’t asked to do it all, just to be aware of what’s in your toolbox and help in those ways.

Please contact Mrs. Janine McDavitt (Parent Ambassador Coordinator) by emailing her at

CLASSROOM CORNER

Things were already business as usual the first few days of school.  Here are just a few photos from some of the activities in our classes.

Intro to Agriculture – the students in Intro to Ag, under the direction of Mrs. Stewart, were treated to a guest visitor the first couple days of school – a silage harvester!  The students learned the various parts of the machine and how it works, along with it many uses.

Piano 101

The students in Piano 101 received their keyboards on the first day of school and were off and running under the instruction of Mrs. Motley.  Students were already working hard and sounding good!  Great job Mustangs!

Chapel Band

The Yorkville Christian High School Worship Team was hard at work the first few days of school already getting ready for our first chapel on September 8.  It was so great to hear God being praised by our amazing group of students.  To God be the glory!  Special thanks to Mrs. Motley for leading our students and helping them use their amazing talents to glorify God!

Drawing and Painting Class

Students in Mr. McDavitt’s Drawing and Painting class were hard at work week one already. Students were working on their Value Scales.  This particular project taught them how to differentiate shades from light to dark on a graduated spectrum.

1st Chapel of the School Year

On Thursday, September 8, Yorkville Christian High School held the first chapel of the school year.  The student body was treated to some amazing praise and worship songs led by Mrs. Motley and our Worship Team.  Our message for the chapel was provided by Yorkville Christian High School alum, Noah Lewis, who talked to the students about the most important question they will ever have to answer – Who is Jesus to you?  It was a great way to kick off the new school year.  To God be the glory!

Agricultural Entrepreneurship Class

The Agricultural Entrepreneurship Class, which is taught by Mrs Stewart, recently toured the premier agricultural tourism stop in Northern Illinois – Kuipers Family Farm. Kuipers Family Farm has an Apple Picking Orchard; Pumpkin Patch; Sunflower Experience; Country Market; Wedding and Events Venue; on-site restaurants; and so much more.  It was a tremendous opportunity for our students to examine how a farm family made a very successful business out of connecting people to agriculture and seeing how their food is grown firsthand.  Families and people of all backgrounds leave Kuipers Family Farm with experiences and memories as well as great tasting locally grown products to enjoy.  The Yorkville Christian students used the trip to gather many exciting ideas, as they endeavor to begin Yorkville Christian’s first annual farmers market this fall.

Introduction to Drawing and Painting

The Introduction to Drawing and Painting class, under the direction of Mr. McDavitt, recently completed a Values Squares project, which was an exercise teaching the values of grays in a black and white drawing.  The students did a great job!

Geometry

The Geometry classes, under the instruction of Mrs. Tickel, completed a lesson that reviewed plotting points on a coordinate plane by creating unique dot-dot sketches.  This was a fun way for students to review an Algebra 1 topic during the first week of class.

Students in Geometry class also used geometric nets to construct their own 3D figures including cones, pyramids, prisms, and cylinders.  Here are some samples of the students’ work.

Why versus What

Hmmmm?  Are you able to slow down often to contemplate why you are doing what?  In the world of education, sports, and mission advancement, it is critical for leaders, teachers, coaches, etc., to pause often to consider why versus what.

The why behind a concept becomes the foundation that ensures success.

The why gives shape to the what.

…Chris Orwig

Therefore, most likely…

– Teachers prepare lesson plans and tests to move students from A to Z in a given year with the result of students responding “aha, I got it; I understand; I have learned; I have mastered the subject.”

– Coaches plan practices, strengthening and team building activities, game plays in order to post a “win” not only for the “game,” but also for athletes who become productive citizens.  As I write this, the Final Four are playing for the NCAA championship.  Basketball is my favorite sport, and I always find it interesting to watch the coaches of the teams…how do they react to good plays, missed plays, fouls, poorly called fouls; all scenarios of which they most likely have prepared their players for; and, in turn, how do the players react?  If not the final “win,” do the athletes still reach the “aha” moment of team playing and winning or losing with a maturity?

– Mission Advancement (my area) prepares articles, letters, and events all to move parents/grandparents/friends from bystanders to engaged partners in the mission of the Christian organization.

Therefore, when Yorkville Christian High School presents a “request” for volunteers, for prayers, for donations of dollars, time, or service (all the what), the why is not only “help” is needed, but also, the Board, Administration, and staff wish to establish a partnership with each of you.

The next time you receive a request from Yorkville Christian whether for volunteering, prayers, and/or dollars, remember the “why” for the request.  Your response of support helps us reach the “aha” moments every year for your students….the end result wherein you are an important partner in that goal.

PS….the Why versus What is true in our parenting/grandparenting, our employment, our relationships.  So….take time to give thought to your whys.

And, thank you to all who have joined with us in this elite partnership.  You are awesome!  Have a blessed summer; more this fall.

Connie Brott

CLASSROOM CORNER

Chemistry – Yorkville Christian High School Chemistry classes, under the direction of Mr Fred Versluys, recently completed a specific heat lab.  Using the process of calorimetry, students were determining the heat capacity and specific heat of various metals.  Percentage error from actual data would also be determined as would determining how these terms integrate into the “real world.”  It was another wonderful example of hands-on learning for students!

Honors Physics – The Yorkville Christian High School Honors Physics class, under the instruction of Dr. Ryan Hooper, recently completed a rotational motion lab in class.  The students were asked to find out if the rotational acceleration of a system is constant, and they were asked to measure the torque created by the rotational sensor’s bearings.  The Honors Physics class at Yorkville Christian is taught by Dr. Ryan Hooper, who is a Professor of Physics at Lewis University. Yorkville Christian students can earn college credit by completing the Honors Physics course in high school.  We thank Dr. Hooper for all of his efforts with our students, and for providing this amazing opportunity for our students through Lewis University.

Geometry – Geometry students were asked to research and construct their own unique kite.  Students were studying various polygons including the kite.  Students were given a couple days to construct their kites and then the class went outside and flew the kites.  Students were graded on the construction of the kite and received additional points for whether or not it stayed airborne.  It was a fun activity and a great way for students to learn about polygons.  Special thanks to Mrs. Tickel for her creativity with the lesson.

Honors Introduction to CoachingOn April 19, Jack Fitzgerald, an NBA scout for the Miami Heat, came to Yorkville Christian High School to talk to Mr. Sovern’s Honors Introduction to Coaching class.  Coach Fitzgerald spoke to the students about what his job as an NBA scout entailed, and spoke to the students about coach/player relationships, as Coach Fitzgerald spoke about his relationship with NBA Hall of Famer, Dwyane Wade, who Coach Fitzgerald coached in high school. It was a great experience for our students.  Special thanks to Coach Fitzgerald for sharing his wealth of knowledge with our students.

Animal Science 2 – The Yorkville Christian High School Animal Science 2 class recently spent the day at the Brookfield Zoo observing animal habitats and investigating careers in veterinary and zoology.  This long-awaited trip was a culmination of units studied including Animal Classification and Body Systems, Zoology, Illinois Wildlife, Animal and Habitat Conservation, Human Wildlife Conflict and all of the unique characteristics and confirmations of God’s amazing creation that we discuss in class on a daily basis.  Special thanks to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook for arranging this amazing trip.

Introduction to Agriculture – On Wednesday, April 27, the Yorkville Christian Introduction to Ag classes visited Fair Oaks Farm.  The students were able to experience the Dairy and Pig Adventure, where they learned about how modern dairy and pig farms operate.  It was a great hands-on learning experience for our students.  Thank you to Mrs. Wiesbrook and Mrs. Stewart for planning the trip, and special thanks to the parents who helped chaperone the trip.

Animal Science – Animal Science students recently learned how to give animals injections by practicing subcutaneous and intramuscular injections on oranges and chicken breasts.  The activity was a great hands-on learning tool to help students understand the process.  Special thanks to Mr. Wiesbrook for the creative lesson plan.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS TAKE SENIOR TRIP

On Monday, March 28, 21 members of the senior class departed Yorkville Christian High School for an amazing senior trip.  The group traveled to Mason, Ohio the first day and spent the afternoon and evening at the Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio.  The students enjoyed the water park, and a wonderful pasta bar for dinner.

Tuesday morning, the students were able to enjoy the water park again and a taco buffet for lunch, and then at noon the group departed for the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.  The visit to the Creation Museum started with a viewing of “The Created Cosmos” Planetarium Show at the Creation Museum, and then students had several hours to enjoy the various indoor and outdoor exhibits of the Creation Museum with their classmates.  The group departed the Creation Museum at 7 pm and spent Tuesday night at the Comfort Suites in Dry Ridge, Kentucky.  The students ate dinner together and then enjoyed various games and activities after dinner.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, the group departed the hotel on Wednesday morning and headed for the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky.  The students spent seven hours at the Ark Encounter and Zoo, and also enjoyed a lunch buffet at the Ark.  The students had a wonderful day and were amazed at all the fantastic exhibits and activities.  After the day at the Ark, the group departed for the hotel and enjoyed a great dinner and then participated in various activities including swimming and bowling.  It was a very busy but rewarding day!

Thursday morning started with the group enjoying a breakfast at the Hotel Convention Center and then departing for Yorkville Christian High School.  The group stopped at Cracker Barrel for lunch and enjoyed ice cream at Fair Oaks Farm on the trip back to school.  Special thanks to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook who not only planned the entire trip, but also chaperoned the group.  We thank the Lord for their dedication to our students and willingness to provide incredible experiences such as these.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN PRINCIPAL, MR. AARON SOVERN, RECOGNIZED BY JUDSON COLLEGE

Aaron Sovern, from Aurora Ill., graduated from Judson in the spring of 2000. He aligned his studies and activities at Judson with his lifelong dream of becoming a teacher and a coach.

Aaron joined the Judson Men’s Basketball team and was surprised to find only a few others on the team who also lived in his state during freshman year. “It was a great experience meeting teammates/friends from such diverse backgrounds,” he remarks.Fourteen years after his graduation, Aaron made a big decision.

“In 2014, my family and I took a leap of faith as I left a comfortable/secure job in Indian Prairie School District 204 to follow God’s call and assist in starting a Christian high school,” he explains.
Aaron is currently working and serving in three positions for the @YorkvilleChristianSchool that he helped develop in Illinois. “We are just beginning our eighth year as a school and it has been awesome to see God at work from the beginning. I serve as the Principal, Athletic Director, and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.”

Starting Yorkville Christian high school was a challenging process, but Aaron had faith in God’s plan and ended up with a career that involves several of his passions. He reflects, “There have been many difficulties and roadblocks along the way, but through it all God’s glory has been on display.”

That glory was certainly on display when Yorkville Boys Basketball team won the State Championship for Class 1A. Congratulations to this alumnus who listened to God’s call, worked hard and inspired his team to play hard. Certainly, all things came together for God’s glory.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PLAYS FIRST GAME IN SCHOOL HISTORY

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling team made history during the weekend of February 25-26.  The team won the first state championship in Yorkville Christian High School history by winning the 1A Wrestling State Championship Meet at the Grossinger Motors Center in Bloomington, IL.

The road to the championship started on Friday, February 25, with a 7 pm dual meet against Colfax (Ridgeview).  The Mustangs won in a very decisive manner with a 63-12 victory.  Aiden Larsen (106), Noah Dial (132), Braulio Flores (138), Drew Torza (152), Tyler Martinez (160), Jack Gillen (170), Jackson Mehochko (182), and Mike Esquivel (285) all recorded pins.  Isaac Bourge (120), Grason Johnson (126), and Chris Durbin (195) all recorded decision wins, and Jeremy Loomis (145) won by forfeit.  It was a great start to the weekend for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs were next in action on Saturday morning at 11 am against a very formidable opponent in Tolono Unity.  Once again, the Mustangs were laser focused and took care of business with a dominant 51-30 win.  The action started with the 138-pound match, and Braulio Flores responded with a pin to get the team off to a great start.  Drew Torza won a 5-1 decision in the 152 match.  After that, pins were recorded by Tyler Martinez (160), Jack Gillen (170), Mike Esquivel (285), Aiden Larsen (106), Isaac Bourge (120), Grason Johnson (126), and Noah Dial (132).  It was a great team effort, and the Mustangs were on to the championship match at 7 pm!

The Mustangs faced Tremont High School in the championship match.  Jeremy Loomis got the Mustangs off to a huge start with a pin in the 145-pound match.  Drew Torza followed with a pin of his own, and Tyler Martinez recorded a 7-2 decision win to get the Mustangs off and running.  Mike Esquivel recorded a forfeit win at 285, and Aiden Larsen also recorded a forfeit win at 106.  Issac Bourge kept the momentum going by recording a pin in the 120-pound match, and Grason Johnson (126) earned a decisive 11-0 win and Noah Dial followed it up with a 20-2 technical fall, and the Mustangs were STATE CHAMPIONS by a score of 48-24!

A special thanks to head coach, Mike Vester, for all of his years of hard work and dedication to bring this amazing accomplishment to fruition.  Also special thanks to his assistant coaches – Brody Vester, Travis Martinez, Mike Esquivel, and Nick Loomis for all of their hard work behind the scenes with the team.  Coach Vester would also like to thank Mr. Sovern and Mr. and Mrs. Stewart for all of their support of the team and the program over the years.

Finally, Yorkville Christian High School and the wrestling team would like to thank God for the amazing things He continues to do at Yorkville Christian High School, and this was just another example of God at work.  God is so good, and all glory to Him!!  Proverbs 21:31 – “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory belongs to the Lord!”

Here are some photos of the incredible experience.

On Sunday, March 6, a special parade and rally was held for the wrestling team to celebrate the amazing accomplishment of winning a state title.  The event started with a parade that kicked off at 2 pm from the high school parking lot and proceeded through the Ashley Pointe subdivision to Yorkville Middle School and back.  The parade consisted of a few fire trucks, a huge tractor and wagon for the wrestlers to ride, a few horses, and a police escort.  It was a great parade.  After the parade, a very nice crowd gathered in the school chapel for a pep rally.  Coach Vester introduced his coaching staff and spoke a little about each wrestler.  It was a very fitting way to conclude such an outstanding season!  We cannot wait until next year and the REPEAT!  GO MUSTANGS!

BOYS BASKETBALL WINS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP – THE JOURNEY

MUSTANG BASKETBALL WINS 3RD STRAIGHT REGIONAL CROWN

On Friday, February 25, the Yorkville Christian High School boys basketball team won the Serena Regional Championship with a 72-32 victory over Ottawa Marquette.  The Mustangs were led by Jaden Schutt with 17 points, and DJ Douglas with 14 points.  The Regional Championship marked the third straight regional crown for the Yorkville Christian High School basketball program. Congratulations to KJ Vasser and David Douglas Jr. who advanced in the 3 point shooting contest.

BASKETBALL WINS SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN CONVINCING FASHION

The Yorkville Christian High School boys’ basketball team competed in the Woodlands (Streator) Sectional the week of March 1-4.  The team opened up sectional play with a semi final game against Chicago Ellison on Tuesday, March 2.  The game was never in doubt, as the Mustangs overwhelmed Ellison with pressure and forced them into 34 turnovers leading to an 83-39 victory.  Jaden Schutt led the Mustangs with 24 points, and DJ Douglas, Jr. added 16.  The win advanced the Mustangs into the championship game on Friday, March 4, where they faced Putnam County High School.  Once again, the Mustangs were just too much for the overmatched opponent and won the sectional title by a final score of 81-47.  The Mustangs were led by Jaden Schutt’s 21 points. DJ Douglas Jr. again had a huge game with 19 points, while KJ Vasser (18 points), and Tyler Burrows (13 points) also had good games. With the victory, the Mustangs headed to the Illinois State University Super Sectional on Monday, March 7, against the Lexington Minutemen.  Special congratulations to DJ Douglas, Jr. and KJ Vasser who also advanced to the state finals in the three-point contest.  GREAT JOB MUSTANGS!

SUPER SECTIONAL OPPONENT IS NO MATCH FOR BASKETBALL TEAM

On Monday, March 7, the Yorkville Christian High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Illinois State University to play Lexington High School in the super sectional game.  A fan bus of Mustang students accompanied the team to the big game.  The Mustangs jumped on the Minutemen early, and never looked back, cruising to a 71-33 victory.  The Mustangs were led by Jaden Schutt with 22 points.  KJ Vasser and Brayden Long each contributed 13 points, and Tyler Burrows finished with 11.  The Mustangs advanced to the state finals for the first time in school history.  All Glory to God!

“MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” MUSTANGS WIN STATE!

On Wednesday, March 9, the Yorkville Christian High School boys’ basketball team departed for Champaign, IL to compete in the basketball state finals.  The team arrived and participated in a short practice, and then enjoyed a team dinner together and watched film.  After that, it was lights out in anticipation for the semi-final game Thursday morning against Steelville.  The Mustangs got out to a great start behind Jaden Schutt, and actually led by a score of 21-2 after the first quarter and cruised to a 70-27 victory.  The Mustangs were led by Brayden Long with 23 points, Jaden Schutt recorded 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists.  Every member of the team saw playing time in the victory.

The Mustangs returned to action on Saturday morning for the state championship game.  The opponent for the championship was Liberty High School.  Unlike the semi-final game, this one was a battle throughout.  The Mustangs actually trailed throughout the first half, but a 17-2 second half run sealed the win and the championship for the team!  The team finished with a record of 25-13.  It was definitely a special ride full of ups and downs, but throughout the season God was in control, and the team found strength in His plan.  To God be the glory!

Biology – Knowing that certain minerals are essential to bone health, Biology students, under the direction of Mrs. Schnyders, compared normal bones with bones that had been stripped of calcium, observing how weakened the bones without calcium had become.  The lesson served as a great visual for students to better understand bone health.

Geometry – Students in Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry class recently went around the school measuring the diameter and finding the area and circumference of various circles.  Students were able to walk around the school and pick any circles they wanted to use as examples.

Media Writing and Production — Mr. Vester’s Media Writing and Production class is working on a full semester project that will serve as the class practicum/portfolio project that is not only teaching the students every aspect of film production, but at the same time really helping the future of the school.  The students are creating a “virtual tour” that will be placed on the school’s website.  The students in the class were divided into production teams, and each group was given a series of areas to cover.  The assignments included interviewing faculty and coaches from every discipline, sport, and club at Yorkville Christian High School in order to put together a virtual tour for prospective families.  Each video segment is about 60-90 seconds in length and describes in detail the class, sport, or club assigned.  The students were responsible for setting up an assignment board with a schedule of the areas that needed to be filmed and when production for each assignment would take place.  Students were responsible for filming the segment, including providing proper lighting and sound, and for the final editing of the video.  It was an unbelievable, real-life project for the students.  Special thanks to Mr. Mike Vester for all of his hard work behind the scenes with this class.  Great job to Mr. Vester and the students!

Mission Advancement Update

The Ladder

Too often we climb the ladder of success only to get to the top and realize that ladder is leaning against the wrong tree…or worse, it isn’t leaning against anything at all.  …the fight is about living life to the fullest degree.  And the best way to achieve this goal isn’t simply fighting harder, but fighting in the right way.  Too often we climb the ladder without looking up.  It’s not just the effort we expend but the work itself that makes the journey worthwhile.  As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”  Th challenge is to discover what the work is.

The Creative Fight, Chris Orwig

A fellow educator and friend gifted me with this book.  Now, one needs to understand my friend is “right brained (creative),” and I am “left brained (logical/analytical).”  I just simply laughed when the gift was presented.  However, it has become an extremely interesting book to read and work through.  But, now you ask, how does that apply to Yorkville Christian High School (YCHS) and to the position as Director of Mission Advancement.  Well………

What parents normally expect from a student’s education is the mastery of the three Rs (reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic).  However, in today’s education world a need for a greater educational platform has been recognized.  At YCHS, my observations have recognized there is more than the three Rs being offered.  There is a desire to educate your student to be energized and empowered to make a difference for God in His world.  At the same time, opportunities are provided to challenge students to discover what career paths may lead them to make the “journey worthwhile.”

That paragraph alone provides the impetus for pursuing the involvement of not only parents, but also grandparents, friends, and businesses in this creative education being offered.  With this education comes the need for all to be actively involved whether through attendance at events, volunteering, praying for, and/or providing funds above and beyond the tuition payments.

As you know from past articles, there is always the opportunity to provide a monetary gift even though fall is when most activity takes place.  How about applying creative ways to provide a gift this spring…possibly forgoing a cup of specialty coffee once a week, placing all of your loose change in a jar…let your creative juices flow and provide a donation no matter the size before the end of the year.

Is this not a way to also fulfill that “far and away the best prize that life has to offer” in helping to provide that creative education for your student?

I, personally, have a l..o..n..g way to go to become “right brained,” but thanks to my friend I can begin to embrace more creativity.  You can too!  Believe in yourself.

Connie J. Brott

Director of Mission Advancement

CLASSROOM CORNER

Geometry – Geometry students recently created their own logos as a way to reinforce the concepts they learned about symmetry.  The students could design a logo that pertained to a particular personal interest for each of them.  It was a great project to reinforce symmetry, and the students were extremely creative!  Kudos to Mrs. Tickel and her students for the great work!

Honors Introduction to Coaching – Mr. Sovern’s Honors Introduction to Coaching class recently had each student teach a technical skill.  The skills taught could be anything that was of interest to each student, and included such things as the proper way to field a ground ball in baseball, proper mechanics for pitching a baseball, proper technique for shooting a free throw, how to properly kick a soccer ball, and how to perform a wrestling move just to name a few.  It was a great exercise to teach students how to take a skill that they understand and be able to coach someone else to carry out the skill properly.  The students did a great job!

Chemistry – The Chemistry students, under the direction of Mr. Fred Versluys, recently completed a Precipitate Lab.  Students combined seven different chemical solutions to determine which ones formed a precipitate.  Students then determined by mass how much precipitate formed from previous learning.  Here are some photos of the students at work.

Biology – Biology students are diving into the various systems of the body, and are currently studying the Integumentary System (the skin).  Students viewed various tissue types under the microscope and began creating an “owner’s manual for the skin” in which they will include the structure and function of the skin as well as how to properly care for one’s skin.  Mrs. Schnyders was very happy with the work of the students during this unit, and the assessments the students completed at the end of the unit.

Algebra 2  — Algebra 2 classes used their knowledge of analyzing polynomials to design their own creative roller coaster.  They named them and then analyzed the domain, range, intervals of increasing and decreasing, intervals of positive and negatives, and maximums and minimums of their graphs.  The students enjoyed incorporating their knowledge of the subject with their creative talents.  Thank you to Mrs. Tickel for a great lesson and activity!

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

LADY MUSTANGS ENJOY SENIOR NIGHT

On Monday, January 31, the Lady Mustangs basketball team took on Schaumburg Christian at home.  The night was a special night for the program, as for the first time in program history, the team honored the lone senior on the team, Felicity Allgood.  Felicity has been the leading scorer for the team this year, and was named to the All-Tournament teams at the Reed-Custer Thanksgiving tournament and the Earlville Christmas Classic.  She has averaged just over 13 points per game for the Lady Mustangs.  The game did not disappoint, other than the final score, as the Lady Mustangs battled all night, before losing in overtime 71-67.  Felicity recorded a double/double on Senior Night, with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Also contributing were Danielle Bulson, with 26 points and 7 assists, and Grace Allgood with 11 points.  Hailey Fallon led the Lady Mustangs with 12 rebounds.  As much as the girls wanted to get the win on Senior Night, it still was a great night, as the future of the program looks very bright.  Special thanks to the Pink Elite Basketball Club, as many of their players came out to support the Lady Mustangs.  Best of luck to Felicity, as she attends Waubonsee Community College next year with plans to major in Nursing and play softball.  May God continue to mark out His plan for her life.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM CAPTURES REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Yorkville Christian Mustang wrestling team won the Class 1A Seneca Regional on Saturday, February 5, knocking off perennial powerhouse, Coal City, to capture the title.  The Mustangs sent seven wrestlers to the finals and four to the 3rd place match to determine who would qualify for the Coal City sectional.  The top three at regionals advance.  Yorkville Christian went a perfect 7 for 7 in the finals matches to crown seven weight class champions, and they won two of the four 3rd place matches to send a total of nine wrestlers to sectionals.

The Mustangs had champions in Aiden Larsen (106), Isaac Bourge (120), Grason Johnson (126), Noah Dial (132), Tyler Martinez (160), Jackson Gillen (170), and Michael Esquivel (285).  Braulio Flores and Drew Torza snagged third places to move on to the sectional and a chance at a trip to the IHSA state!  A 2-day sectional was held in Coal City the week of February 7 to determine who makes it to the IHSA Individual Championships in Champaign.  The regional win for the team sets the stage for the Mustangs to wrestle in the team sectional for a chance to qualify for team state and make a run at a team state championship as well.  GREAT JOB MUSTANGS and a special thanks to our head coach, Mike Vester, and his assistant coaches for all of their hard work and dedication to the team.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN STUDENTS PLAY BINGO WITH OPEN DOOR POLICY RESIDENTS

Some of the members of the Yorkville Christian High School senior class have been working as pen pals with residents at Open Door Rehab Center in Sandwich throughout the year.  The students have been writing letters back and forth with the residents for several months.  Our Yorkville Christian High School students really wanted to get the opportunity to meet with their pen pals from Open Door in person, but do to COVID restrictions, that was not possible.  However, on Friday, February 11, teacher, Mrs. Liz Sovern, found a way, as she arranged a “virtual party”.  Our Yorkville Christian seniors played several rounds of virtual bingo with the residents via Zoom, and were able to meet their pen pals and introduce themselves to the people they have been corresponding with via their letters.  It was a great time of fellowship, and a very rewarding experience for all those involved!

CBS CHANNEL 2 SPORTS STOPS BY YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN FOR A STORY

CBS Channel 2 sports reporter, Matt Zahn, recently visited Yorkville Christian High School to do a story on the basketball team and their upcoming run in the state playoffs.  It was a great experience for our players, as several were interviewed for the story.  The story itself has since aired before the publication of this newsletter.  The Mustangs began their state playoff run on Saturday, February 19, with a home game against Morgan Park Academy.  The Mustangs won the game handedly by a score of 108-48.  A special thanks to Mr. Zahn for his interest in Yorkville Christian High School and our basketball program.

Mission Advancement Update

Resolutions????

How are those New Year resolutions fairing after one month of 2022?  If you are like most of us, the new year starts out with resolutions whether for enthusiastic changes for careers, family, health, exercise, etc.  Yet, just a few weeks in and day-to-day “life” catches us up again, but do not lament over “best laid plans” as you join the ranks of many others.  How about another way to look at the new year?

This Christmas, we received many Christmas letters.  However, one from a dear long-time friend who shared not only a beautiful Christmas letter with pictures but also a great way to start the new year.  Instead of resolutions, her letter began:

As we begin a New Year, we reflect on 2021 and are GRATEFUL!

Her letter continued with all for which she and her husband are grateful, mostly centering around health, jobs, grandchildren….all under the auspices of God’s hand.

At Yorkville Christian High School, there is also much to be grateful for from students to families to staff to curriculum to sports to volunteers to spectators to donors!   Each an important component of the YCHS family.

Though an Annual Fund is year round, the majority of the gifts arrive near yearend.  As we review 2021, we are grateful for the dollars received; we are grateful for the new donors that joined our family this year; we are grateful for the donors who continued with us.  Donor dollars allow us to fulfill our mission of providing Christian education to our families.

It is never too late to send your gift for the Annual Fund…..February, March, April, and on gifts are welcomed and appreciated.  Remember, a gift of any size makes a difference in the lives of our families.  Not sure about that statement; recall the Widow’s mite story in Scripture!

How can I give?  Thanks to technology, there are several options available — online giving at yorkvillechristian.com, drop off at school, and US Postal Service are all available.

Now take a few moments to “let go” of those resolutions that may be haunting your mind. Instead take time at the dinner table this evening and have each member share what he/she is grateful for as the new year proceeds.  And, then add a special prayer thanking God for Yorkville Christian High School and its mission to empower and energize students to make an impact on God’s World.

Thank you for partnering with us in this mission.  Happy 2022!

Connie J. Brott

Director of Mission Advancement

CLASSROOM CORNER

Biology – Mrs. Schnyders’ Biology classes used the day before Christmas vacation to combine a biology experiment with a little holiday cheer.  The students completed a Christmas cookie activity to reinforce the structure and function of a cell.  Students created “Cell Christmas Cookies” by decorating their “cell” cookie with cytoplasm (frosting), a plasma membrane (licorice rope), and other candies that represented the various important organelles in a cell.  The activity was very enjoyable and tasty for the students, while providing an excellent way for the students to understand the various parts of a cell.

Chemistry – Chemistry students were recently given a flask of “sludge” and had to determine the liquids and solids in the flask along with their properties.  Students were responsible for separating and finding the density, moles, and % composition by mass for each of the substances in the “sludge”.  This lab served as a great review for the students’ semester exam.  Kudos to Mr. Versluys for a great experiment!

Biology – Biology students, under the direction of Mrs. Schnyders, completed an “Egg Osmosis” lab by first removing the egg shells through a chemical reaction with vinegar.   Students then placed the “naked eggs” into hypotonic and hypertonic solutions and documented their observations as osmosis took place.

Geometry – Students in Geometry class with Mrs. Tickel created “geometry boxes”.  Students needed to represent each chapter and the key ideas/vocabulary words/topics that were covered in those chapters with definitions or pictures.  Each face of the box represented a chapter.  The assignment was a great review and creative way for students to celebrate their first semester geometry learning.

Senior Seminar – Each senior at Yorkville Christian High School spends a semester researching a topic of their choice in preparation for “Senior Seminars”.  Each student puts together research about their topic over an entire semester, and then gives a major presentation before a panel consisting of faculty members, school board members, and other distinguished members of the community.  The students are graded based on a variety of different skills including research skills, oral presentation skills, and the overall effectiveness of their argument of the topic they chose. Students dress professionally for the presentations, and are given 30 minutes to make their presentation. It is a great way to prepare them for college and life after high school.  There were a variety of topics this semester including “Capitalism and Well-Being”; “Traumatic Brain Injuries in Athletes”; “The Overtraining of Young Athletes”; “Deforestation of the Amazon”; “The Benefits of Legal Immigration”; and “Capitalism vs. Socialism.”  The students did an excellent job!  Special thanks to Mrs. Kim Long for all of her work with the students.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN STANDARDIZED TESTING

As a school, it is our desire to strive towards continuous academic excellence.  We are blessed to have faculty and staff who are committed to this taking place daily in their classrooms.  In addition to this, we believe that collecting academic data is an important step in this process.  Data collected from school-wide assessments provide us as a faculty and staff with baseline information that is useful in both our academic programming, school improvement goals and instructional excellence.

In order to start this process, Yorkville Christian High School students spent the morning of Tuesday, January 18, participating in various standardized tests.  Students in grades 8-11 took the PreACT Assessment.  This is research driven assessment that is also beneficial for students in their preparations for taking the ACT during their high school experience.  It assessed our students in four main content areas:  English, Math, Reading, and Science.  We look forward to receiving the results of these assessments, so we can continue to improve the educational experiences our students receive, as we prepare them for God’s plan for their lives.

Physical Education – Mr. Veliz presented a “Flickerball” unit to his physical education classes during the month of January.  Flickerball is an exciting game that challenges students to use several different motor skills.  Tires are used for goals and each tire is under a basketball hoop.  Students played with a football and advanced the ball vertically up the basketball court, and then tried to throw the football through the goal (tire).  If a student threw the ball through the tire inside the 3-point line of the basketball court, it counted as one point.  If a student threw the football through the tire from beyond the 3-point line, it counted as two points.  Pictured below are the winners from each class period.

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT BODY ENJOYS CHRISTMAS MOVIE

On Friday, December 17, the last day before Christmas vacation, the entire student body of Yorkville Christian High School gathered in The Canyon during homeroom and lunch to watch the movie “Home Alone” together.  The Yorkville Christian High School Student Council planned the event, which also included free popcorn for the entire student body.  It was a great way to wrap up the 2021 school year, and allow the students to enjoy an activity together before the break.  Special thanks to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook, the Student Council sponsors, for organizing the event.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN BASKETBALL PROGRAM HOSTS ALUMNI NIGHT

On Wednesday, December 22, the Yorkville Christian High School Mustangs hosted Earlville High School for a basketball game.  In addition to the game, the boys basketball program hosted a “Mustang Alumni Basketball Night”.  All former Mustang basketball players were invited back to enjoy the night’s festivities.  The evening consisted of each alum receiving an alumni basketball t-shirt; being a part of the pregame activities; taking part in the team introductions; a special halftime ceremony where a capsule of each alum’s accomplishments in a Mustang uniform was read; and a pizza party following the game for all alumni, current players, and coaches.  It was a fantastic evening, and definitely something Coach Sovern and the program plans on continuing each year.  The evening ended on a high note with a Mustang victory!

COACH SOVERN ACHIEVES MILESTONE WIN

On Wednesday, December 22, Yorkville Christian High School basketball coach, Aaron Sovern, achieved a milestone win against Earlville in “The Canyon”.  The win marked the 100th win of Coach Sovern’s career at Yorkville Christian.  The accomplishment was a remarkable one for such a young program.  Coach Sovern has literally built the Mustang program from the ground up. The Mustangs were not even an IHSA program until the 2016-2017 season.  In a very short time, Coach Sovern has built the program into a state powerhouse.  The program already has an Elite 8 appearance, two Regional Championships, and a sectional championship, along with several tournament championships.  The team finished the 2020-2021 campaign ranked as the #1 team in the state of IL for Class 1A, and this year’s team is also ranked as the #1 team in the state.  Coach Sovern has achieved this success, while playing one of the toughest schedules in the state.  He has consistently played larger, quality schools on the state level, but also the national level, traveling around the country to participate in top notch shootouts and tournaments.  In addition to all the success on the court, Coach Sovern has had a tremendous impact on so many lives off the court.  He is an excellent Christian mentor to his players, and pushes them on and off the court to carry out the plan God has for each of his players after their time at Yorkville Christian High School.  It was such an honor for many of his alumni players to be able to attend the game where Coach Sovern picked up his 100th win, so they could share the impact he has had on each of their lives.  Congratulations Coach Sovern!  May God continue to bless your coaching career and mission work for years to come!

Special thanks to the JV coaches, Doc Schutt and Coach Carter for coaching the team.  Great job Mustangs!

MUSTANG WRESTLING PROGRAM PARTICIPATES IN THE FLAVIN INVITATIONAL

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling team had quite a Christmas vacation! After a strong showing in the Washington Invitational, the team competed in the Flavin Invitational the last week of December. This tournament consisted of 2A and 3A schools (two of the schools, DeKalb and Lockport, were nationally ranked). There was also a national power from TN, and a couple strong teams from WI. Yorkville Christian was the only 1A team in the tournament! The Mustangs went 4-2 overall during the 2-day event. Here were the results from the two days:

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM CELEBRATES SENIOR NIGHT

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling team hosted Newman Catholic High School on Tuesday, January 18.  The night was a special night, because the program honored the three seniors on the team as part of Senior Night.  The three seniors are Braulio Flores, Isaac Bourge, and Michael Esquivel. It is hard to put into words what these young men have meant to the wrestling program. They are a huge reason for the success the program has had, and this was on display again on this particular night, as Braulio Flores and Michael Esquivel both recorded 1st round pins, and Isaac Bourge provided a 3-2 victory over the #2 ranked wrestler in state at 120 pounds. Other victories included Aiden Larsen (113 pounds), Noah Dial (132 pounds), Drew Torza (152 pounds), Tyler Martinez (160 pounds), Jackson Gillen (170 pounds) and Jackson Mehochko (182 pounds). All of this led to a convincing win over Newman Catholic High School by a score of 65-6. The JV wrestlers also went undefeated as Tristan Gleason, Ty Lombardo, and Xander Oliver recorded wins. Great job Mustangs and may God continue to bless these seniors, as they carry out the next phase of God’s plan for their lives. #AlwaysaMustang

VARSITY BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM CONTINUES TO BATTLE THROUGH GRUELING SCHEDULE AND SCHUTT RECORDS 2000TH POINT

After competing in the Plano Christmas Classic, the boys’ basketball team started the new year with more of the same – games against some of the top teams in the country and the state.  In early January, the team traveled to the prestigious Highland Basketball Shootout and played Chaminade out of Missouri.  After suffering a tough loss at this shootout, the team responded well with a big win over the #1 team in 2A, Chicago Orr by a score of 81-72.  There was no rest for the weary, as the boys then played Glenbrook South, the #3 team in 4A, and lost a very competitive game by a score of 63-58. Despite a couple of tough losses, the team was ranked #22 in the Chicago Sun-Times Super 25 based on the quality of wins they had and the extremely tough schedule they played.  On January 19, the team played Glenbrook North High School at home.  Yorkville Christian hosted a few special guests as Duke University coaches, Coach Scheyer and Coach Jefferson, attended the game to watch Yorkville Christian guard, Jaden Schutt, play in person.  It was a tight game, but unfortunately, the Mustangs lost by a score of 85-73.  The Mustangs continued their busy schedule with a 94-20 victory on Friday, January 21, over Urban Prep.  There again was no rest for the Mustangs, as they played in the “When Sides Collide” shootout on Saturday, January 22, against state ranked New Trier.  Again, the Mustangs battled but lost by a score of 71-55.  There was some good news during that game, as Jaden Schutt eclipsed the 2,000 points scored mark for his career.  This was an incredible accomplishment.  The Mustangs continue their very difficult schedule with upcoming games against state ranked Kenwood in the Orr Shootout, and games against Peoria Notre Dame and St. Ignatius, as both teams are also ranked.  The Mustangs continue to battle and are preparing for the state tournament and a run at a state championship!  Good luck to the team, as they prepare for the stretch run!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL ENJOYS NEW STUDENT LOUNGE AREA

Yorkville Christian High School recently received a wonderful donation of some student lounge furniture, and a student lounge area was created in the atrium of the school.  It is a beautiful space where students can enjoy some social time before or after school.  A special thanks to the anonymous donor who donated the furniture items to the school.  It is an area that our students will be able to enjoy for years to come.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN MUSTANGS DEFEAT 4A POWERHOUSE AT ORR SHOOTOUT

On Saturday, January 29, the Yorkville Christian Mustangs basketball team played 4A powerhouse, Kenwood Academy, at the Orr Shootout at Orr High School on the West side of Chicago.  It was a great game, and the Mustangs defeated Orr by a score of 75-68.  The Mustangs were led in scoring by Jaden Schutt, who finished with 30 points.  This was a tremendous win for the basketball program!  Great job Mustangs!

Mission Advancement Update

What is Your ID?

Recently, our Pastor’s sermon title was, “May I See Some ID?”  Of course, anyone of us could list numerous times and places where we are required to show our ID.  He alluded to the frustration that can cause.  He then broadened that to include the “ups and downs” of COVID, masks on or off, restaurants full or limited capacity, vaccinations and booster decisions, jubilation and grief, new life and death.  Nevertheless, amidst it all, the past 12 months have brought us to the end of 2021.  And, our ID is first being God’s child.

As Christians, we learn daily to trust God and His plan.  Not sure about that statement?  My response is I may not see God at work when in the midst of any of the above, but my understanding of the events is 20-20 vision in retrospect.  Thus, comes the trusting of God through it all as I am His child.

As we review 2021 in retrospect, Yorkville Christian High School has been blessed the entire year– our students and staff have been safe; quality education continues; our sports teams and athletes are at the top of their performance; friends have been made; service projects have happened; parents and friends are supporting us with their attendance at events, with prayers, and with their dollars for the Annual Fund.

Thanks to all who join with us whether with prayers, volunteerism, attendance at events, or with dollars.  Thanks to those who have financially supported us to date and to those who participated on Giving Tuesday.  Through the end of the year is a traditional time to support your favorite not-for-profit (and we hope Yorkville Christian High School is one of your favorites) know that your gifts are welcomed year round and would be designated for the Annual Fund.  Your support provides ongoing education for all our students as the dollars received are used for tuition assistance given to those families who need a helping hand.  Your support provides the ID reminder that each student is a child of God.

The next time you need to show your ID – pause – and remember that your first ID is “child of God,” and He is with you every step of your life.  New Year’s Eve is a great time to “look back” and marvel at God’s right timing every time in every situation during 2021.  If I could personally visit with each person reading this, I am sure they would acknowledge that they experienced 20-20 vision in that review.  Blessed 2022!

CLASSROOM CORNER

Biology

Biology students in Mrs. Schnyders’ Biology classes recently completed a lab where students assessed nutrition labels on a variety of food items as part of their unit on biological macromolecules.  Students were learning why these macromolecules are vital for their health and survival, along with learning which ones their bodies can make and which ones they must get from their diet.  Students learned that some of the items obtained from their diet are better for them than others.  The students evaluated the food items for saturated versus unsaturated fats, protein, and carbohydrates – including how much of the carbs were from added sugars.

Life Skills

As part of their “Investing and Retirement” unit, Life Skills 101 students had the privilege of gaining wisdom from Thrivent Financial of Oswego guest speakers.  Thrivent Financial shared current best practices and rules for investing and provided answers to student questions about investing and preparing for their futures.   The students thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and learned a great deal about investing and retirement planning.

Media Writing and Production Class

Mr. Vester’s class completed an awesome project in Media Writing and Production.  Students created segments for a 10-minute podcast learning how to throw segments to fellow reporters and contributors.  The students learned the importance of keeping a good flow, and the value of dead air time.  The students completed hands on work with a portable audio mixer and recorder as well as learning the difference in microphones (shotgun, lavalier/lapel, condenser, boundary and dynamic microphones) and how to choose the right microphone for the right situation.  The students also gained valuable experience setting up 3-point lighting in a roundtable discussion.  Students also learned about recording and scriptwriting.  The students recorded a 10-minute podcast with the topic being “10 Days to Happiness.”  Their “Happy Cast” revealed many ways to happiness including more time with loved ones, getting closer to God, not focusing on superficial things, and spending less time on their phones and social media.  GREAT JOB MUSTANGS!

Animal Science II

Animal Science II students recently learned about Illinois Wildlife & Habitats and Animal Rescues & Sanctuaries. This 2-part project consisted of conducting research on a native Illinois Wildlife animal and creating a diorama of that animal’s habitat out of a shoebox. The second part consisted of researching animal sanctuaries and rescues in Illinois. Part of the assignment consisted of a research paper and conducting a phone interview with one of their chosen animal sanctuaries or animal rescues.  It was an excellent learning tool for the students!

Introduction to Coaching

This quarter students in Mr. Sovern’s Honors Introduction to Coaching class read a biography on a coach of their choice. They wrote a book review and then created and presented a slide show to the class. Family background, career highlights, coaching & communication style, and legacy were topics discussed.

Chemistry

Chemistry students, under the direction of Mr. Versluys, recently completed a lab that measured the polarity of water compared to the polarity of isopropyl alcohol.  Students actually took part in 6 mini-labs.  The conclusion was that due to the polarity of water and strong hydrogen bonds, the high surface area of water was demonstrated.

Life Skills

A surge of warm December weather allowed the Life Skills classes to complete their unit on automotive care.  Mrs. Schnyder’s classes learned how to change a flat tire and also received valuable tips about storing and caring for spare tires and jacks.  It was another very valuable lesson for students.  A special thanks to Mr. Long for assisting with the lesson.

Speech and Communications

Mr. Vester’s classes were given the assignment to present a group speech that was about 15 minutes or more in length about a topic of interest to the group. The students presented on a wide variety of topics, and included several outstanding visual aids as well. Topics covered everything from “Demonic Messages in Music” to “The History of McDonalds” to “How to Create a Great Podcast”. The students did an outstanding job, and the experience of them presenting in front of audiences will definitely prepare them for life after high school.

Horticulture Class

Students in Horticulture Class, under the direction of Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook, recently created Christmas wreaths as a class project.  Christy’s Flower Farm came to Yorkville Christian High School and taught the students how to create wreaths using fresh greenery from their farm.  The students really enjoyed the lesson, and the end results were fantastic.

Animal Science

Students in Animal Science class spent time dissecting owl pellets.  Students dissected the pellets and had to identify such items as bones, skulls, teeth, etc., while trying to identify what animal was in the pellet.  Some of the skeletons students found in the pellets belonged to mice, rats, voles, shrew, and birds.  It was a great learning experience for the students.

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SERVE AT SAMARITAN’S PURSE

During the month of December, Yorkville Christian High School students completed four days of mission work at Samaritan’s Purse.  Samaritan’s Purse is a nondenominational Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.  Our students were part of the Operation Christmas Child project.  The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a meaningful way to children in need around the world by filling shoeboxes with gifts for children in need.  Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has provided shoeboxes to 188 million children in more than 170 countries.  Yorkville Christian High School set a goal to fill 300 shoeboxes for hurting children this year.  Our families did a great job of taking shoeboxes and filling them for this great cause, and our students did an outstanding job packing the boxes at the Samaritan’s Purse facility.  It was a great reminder during this Christmas season of the love our Savior demonstrated for us, and how He wants us to show that same love to others.

THE BATTLE OF #1’S COMES TO YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN
On Friday, December 10, the Yorkville Christian High School varsity boys’ basketball team hosted the #1 ranked team in the state of IL in the 4A class, Glenbard West. Yorkville Christian is the #1 ranked team in the state of IL in the 1A class. The game also marked only the fifth time in state history where the #1 ranked player in the state of Illinois, Jaden Schutt from Yorkville Christian (Duke commit), battled against the #2 ranked player in the state of Illinois, Braden Huff from Glenbard West (Gonzaga commit), in the same game. Although the outcome was not what the Mustangs hoped for, it was an incredible night with a college type atmosphere, as over 1,000 fans visited The Canyon! The night was also a great reminder of how faithful God has been to Yorkville Christian High School for our basketball program, which hasn’t even been in existence for 10 years yet, to be able to host a game with this much attention. It is a true testament to all of the hard work Coach Sovern and Coach Long have put into building the program from the ground floor! God is good!

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN WRESTLING TEAM WINS REAPER INVITATIONAL

The Yorkville Christian High School wrestling team continues to have an extremely successful season.  The team competed in the Plano High School “Reaper Invitational” the weekend of December 10-11, and ended up winning the championship.  Five Mustang wrestlers, Mike Esquivel, Aiden Larson, Jack Gillen, Isaac Bourge, and Tyler Martinez were crowned individual champions in their respective weight classes.  It was a tremendous accomplishment for the team.  Good luck to the wrestlers as they continue their season!

As a result of this tournament, Yorkville Christian High School wrestlers, Tyler Martinez and Jack Gillen, were named “Athlete of the Week” in two local newspapers.  Tyler was named the Athlete of the Week for the Beacon News, and Jack was named Athlete of Week for the Kendall County Now newspaper.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL PLAYER SIGNS TO PLAY IN COLLEGE
Yorkville Christian High School senior volleyball player, Zoe Schuberth, recently signed a letter of intent to play college volleyball at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina. Zoe was a key component to the Mustang’s 28-6 record this year, and was named to several All-Tournament teams and All-Area teams. Congratulations to Zoe as she carries out the next chapter of God’s plan for her life.

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN LADY MUSTANGS HOST FIRST HOME GAME IN PROGRAM HISTORY

On Thursday, December 16, the Yorkville Christian High School girls’ basketball program hosted their first home game in program history against IFS.  It was another milestone in what has already been an exciting inaugural season for the team.  The Lady Mustangs came out very aggressively and pulled out to a big lead early and never looked back on their way to a 58-6 victory over IFS.  Every member of the team scored in the victory, as it was a total team effort.  Great job ladies!

Meet Our New Staff

Mrs. Laura Schnyders
Biology, Life Skills, and Health
I am so excited to be a part of the Mustang family again! My name is Laura Schnyders and I serve as the Biology, Life Skills, and Health teacher at Yorkville Christian High School. While I am new to Yorkville Christian High School in my role as a teacher, Yorkville Christian certainly isn’t new to me. Yorkville Christian High School holds a special place in my heart and my family’s heart, and I am so honored to be working here. My son, Micah, graduated from Yorkville Christian in May of 2020, and while he only attended Yorkville Christian for his senior year, the staff at Yorkville Christian had a profound impact on his life during his year at Yorkville Christian. He truly enjoyed every moment of his time at Yorkville Christian from the caring staff to the great friends and teammates to the dedicated coaches who worked with him. He definitely felt like he was part of a family. After Micah’s graduation, my husband, Tim, started a new role at Yorkville Christian as Director of Outreach and Enrollment, and he absolutely loves his work and being a part of the Mustang family! First as a Yorkville Christian parent and now as a staff member, Yorkville Christian has been and continues to be a tremendous experience and blessing to me. I started my career in the education field taking Biology and education classes at Olivet Nazarene University and pursuing my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education at Lewis University. I anticipated a lifelong career in education, but had a unique opportunity to gain field experience working as a lab tech at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL, which furthered my love for the sciences and provided applicable experiences to bring back to the classroom. My husband Tim and I are blessed with twins, Micah and Morgan, who are now 20 years old.
As mentioned above, Micah is a 2020 graduate of Yorkville Christian and is now pursuing a career in Public Relations and playing basketball at Eastern Illinois University. Our daughter Morgan was diagnosed with autism at 26 months old and continues her education in a specialized autism program at Elim Christian School in Crestwood, IL. In addition to my previous lab experience, I also had the opportunity to serve at Morgan’s school for the past ten years and gained unique experience providing support services for the special education teachers, therapists, and over 450 students and adults with special needs. I enjoyed my time at Elim very much, but my passion for teaching and Biology continued to linger within. When the science position opened this past summer at Yorkville Christian High School, I felt the Lord calling me to explore this opportunity, and was so blessed to be hired to fulfill this role at the school. It is an honor to explore the world of Biology with Yorkville Christian’s students. I love diving into the beauty and detail with which God created our world, along with the way living things interact with each other and with their environment. We also have the opportunity to note how elements of Biology permeate every aspect of our world – from health and medicine, to the environment and politics, to business and ethics, and more. I challenge the students to be lifelong learners as they pursue their own careers and fields of study. In addition to Biology, the Life Skills 101 course is an essential course of study for all students. In this course we journey through post-high school realities like personal finances, investing and preparing for retirement, buying a home, home/car/medical insurance, job applications and interviews, car and home maintenance and repairs, and more. Students that complete this course are equipped with the confidence and skill sets needed to successfully navigate the “real world” upon graduation.
This spring I will also have the opportunity to teach Health, which will explore all areas of health including physical, emotional, and spiritual health. This course is a beautiful marriage of scientific and life skills elements that will give students the wisdom and structure they need to value who they are as children of God and embrace opportunities for self-care that will further equip them to be all God has created them to be. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Mustang family and for the students I am so honored to serve. Praying for each of them as they continue to learn and grow at Yorkville Christian!

Mission Advancement Update

Family and Blessings

As I write this, Thanksgiving is just a blink away. Being a relational person, it is one of my favorite times of year. God and family are always at the top of my priority list which you most likely can relate to.
However, during this Thanksgiving and Christmas season, the two just naturally come together. It is not just about the “turkey and trimmings” shared at the dinner table, but it is also about recalling with one another the blessings God provided throughout the year. When one takes the time to gather and ask each other what blessings have been received, it is amazing to realize the breadth and scope of God’s provisions day in and day out. Whether you, personally, are a relational person or not, you have another “intentional” family of which you are a vital part but who will not join you at the table for a meal 🙂 the Yorkville Christian High School family. What could be better than to have an intentional family where a Christian environment provides a quality education, competitive sports, social interaction, healthy friend relationships, and caring support for one another? And…the Yorkville Christian family has many amazing blessings that can be shared with one another. As we all know, with family and blessings come responsibilities – praying for one another, attending and celebrating achievements/events, empathizing and sympathizing when worlds turn upside down, and providing dollars within our ability when needed.

As a member of this intentional family, we always ask for your prayers which provide support not only for our students but also for our staff and Board. Students excel when parents, relatives, and friends
attend events. Financial support of our Annual Fund is needed and appreciated – your dollars, no matter the size of the gift, make a difference in providing quality education for students to impact the world for Christ. To provide Annual Fund financial support, visit our website at: YorkvilleChristian.com; click on “Donate” and complete the information. Or, mail or deliver your donation to:

Yorkville Christian High School
Attention Mission Advancement

Whether you are alumni, parent, grandparent, friend, or business, we are excited that you are part of our family. Your prayers, attendance at events, and financial gifts make a difference at Yorkville Christian High School day in and day out.

“My student is so excited about coming to school each day.  He has said that he really feels like the teachers care about him much more than he’s experienced in the public schools…”

YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS MATH AND SCIENCE SHADOW DAY

On Thursday, November 4, Yorkville Christian High School hosted a Math and Science Shadow Day.  The day consisted of several exciting events including a special science lesson on the density of various liquids and the use of microscopes to look at various items; a math lesson that included a special project focusing on factoring skills working with trinomials and binomials; students attended chapel; a pizza lunch with a question and answer session with our Math and Science departments; made fresh salsa in Ag class; and the opportunity to attend other classes with a shadow host.  The shadow students and the hosts had a great time, and it was a privilege to be able to have guests come and visit Yorkville Christian High School.

MUSTANGS HOST “STEP UP DAY”

Yorkville Christian High School hosted a 7th and 8th Grade “Step Up Day” on Thursday, November 11.  The purpose of the day was to help show middle school students some of the main differences between middle school and high school to help facilitate a smooth transition to high school.  Guests attended classes; experienced chapel; participated in mixer games with members of the Yorkville Christian High School Student Council; enjoyed a pizza lunch with current students who shared their experiences about transitioning from middle school to high school; participated in Sports Performance Hour, and much more.  It was great having guests from many different schools join us for the day.

CLASSROOM CORNER

Geometry

Mrs. Tickel’s Geometry students recently completed a “GeoTowns Project”.  The project covers the concepts of parallel lines and transversals creating new angles.  The students learn the relationships between these angles by creating their own town equipped with 12 landmarks based on their creative themes.  The students really show their creativity in creating their GeoTowns, and it is a great project to help reinforce the geometrical concepts.

Physical Education

The Yorkville Christian High School Physical Education classes, under the direction of Mr. JR Veliz, recently completed a three-week volleyball unit.  After spending time teaching the fundamentals of the game, rules, and proper techniques, the unit culminated with a tournament, and each period had a class champion.  The champions of each class period are below.  Great job Mustangs!

Algebra 2

Mrs. Tickel’s Algebra 2 students recently completed a lesson where each student was required to make an original piece of art using the skills they learned in writing equations for lines in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal form using y=Mx+b slope intercept form.  The students really enjoyed the lesson and were very creative with their pieces of art.

Algebra 2

Students in Algebra 2 practiced their factoring of 7 types of quadratic and 3rd degree polynomials with a fun matching game.  This hands on activity serves as a great review tool for the students’ upcoming quiz.

Introduction to Agriculture

Introduction to Agriculture students recently completed a class project where each student was asked to create his/her own signature salsa that appealed to younger families, teenagers, and college students.  The students had to create their own salsa using fresh ingredients and design a marketing plan for the product including a creative name.  The students really enjoyed the activity!  Thank you to our Ag teachers, Mrs. Wiesbrook and Mrs. Stewart, for designing the great learning tool.

Foreign Language

Foreign Language students recently completed a lesson entitled “Restaurants Around the World”.  The students had to pick a country and then design and start their own restaurant in that country.  The restaurant’s food had to fit the culture of that country.  Students had to design their own menu and create a branding/marketing strategy for the restaurant.  They even had to design the attire the restaurant staff would wear.  It was a great learning experience for the students to learn more about foreign countries and the culture and food in various parts of the world.

Life Skills

On Tuesday, November 16, Ms. Amber Holup, a realtor with Home Smart Realty, visited the Life Skills classes at Yorkville Christian High School.  Ms. Holup spoke to the classes about every aspect of renting and buying a property, including interest rates, 15- and 30-year mortgages, what to look for when purchasing a home, her experiences with flipping homes, and much more.  It was an outstanding lesson for our students, and we really appreciate her taking time out of her busy schedule to share her knowledge with our students.  A special thanks to Mrs. Schnyders for organizing this opportunity for her students.

Film Analysis

Mr. Vester’s Film Analysis class recently had the privilege of having Mr. John McDavitt visit the class and share his experience and knowledge regarding mechanical/optical special FX.  Mr. McDavitt, a professional artist, spent time with some of the top Hollywood makeup artists on films such as “Halloween” and “The Thing” and he shared his expertise with our students over the course of two days actually breaking down the scenes in the films and answering questions.  It was such a great experience for our students.

Biology

Biology students in Mrs. Schnyders’ Biology classes recently studied “Chemistry in Biology”.  In order to help the students put the knowledge into action, students built molecules out of gum drops, marshmallows, and toothpicks.  Students then broke down those molecules and rebuilt them into the products that would be formed following a chemical reaction.  Learning how things function at the molecular level helped the students understand how cells function.  It was a great hands-on learning activity.

Biology

Biology students, under the instruction of Mrs. Schnyders, recently performed an experiment to help them understand covalent bonds.  Students used a friction pen to draw pictures of things for which they were thankful, as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday.  Once students finished their pictures, they used the heat from a hair dryer to break the covalent bonds in the ink, and the heat made their pictures (ink) disappear.  The students then used the cold air from a keyboard cleaner spray to spray over their papers, and their pictures reappeared.  It was a great lesson to help students understand how covalent bonds work.

MUSTANGS IN THE COMMUNITY

SENIOR CLASS SERVES AT FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN

On Wednesday, November 3, the Yorkville Christian High School senior class volunteered at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora.  Feed My Starving Children is an organization that serves meals to those in need around the world.  In fact, one of the facts shared during the visit was that Feed My Starving Children has shipped 9,004,608 meals around the world during this fiscal year.  God is really at work at Feed My Starving Children, and it was a privilege to help them in a small way.  This is one of the major missions of Yorkville Christian High School – to have our students take the Christ-centered learning that is presented to them at our school, and use it to energize each and every one of them to go out and be a bright light for Christ and impact His world!  We are so thankful for opportunities to serve at organizations like Feed My Starving Children.

FORMER MUSTANG BASKETBALL PLAYERS OPENS COLLEGE SEASON AGAINST BIG 10 OPPONENT

On Tuesday, November 9, former Mustang basketball player, Micah Schnyders, opened up his college season playing for Eastern Illinois University against the Northwestern Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena.  It was great to see college basketball fans in the stands again, and it was a great atmosphere.  Coach Sovern, Micah’s high school coach, was able to see the game in person along with his family and friends.  Even though the outcome wasn’t what Eastern Illinois hoped for, it was a great experience and great to see a former Mustang play in a Big 10 arena.  Best of luck to Micah, as he continues to use his God-given talents to glorify God.  #AlwaysAMustang!

MUSTANG HOOPS STAR SIGNS WITH DUKE UNIVERSITY

On Wednesday, November 10, Yorkville Christian High School senior basketball player, Jaden Schutt, signed his national letter of intent to play basketball at Duke University next year.  Jaden is currently ranked as the number one player in the state of Illinois.  The event was covered by several media outlets including the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicagoland Prep Hoops, and the Kendall County Now.  The event consisted of an opening speech by Jaden thanking all of those who helped him achieve his dream; the actual signing of his letter of intent; and a time of photos with family, friends, coaches, and teammates.  Yorkville Christian High School is so proud of Jaden, and we cannot wait to see what God has in store for his future.  Congratulations to Jaden and the Schutt family!

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES CONTINUE TO VISIT YORKVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL

Yorkville Christian High School continues to welcome college and university representatives to visit and speak with our students.  We strongly encourage our students even from freshman year to spend time with these representatives to get a blueprint for what they need on their college resumes.  During the month of November, representatives from several college and universities will visit and spend time with our students.  We thank these fine institutions for their time and effort with our students.  Pictured below are some of our students meeting with a representative from Olivet Nazarene University.

The Yorkville Christian High School boys’ basketball team, under the direction of Coach Aaron Sovern and Coach Eric Long, topped many of the preseason boys’ basketball polls as the #1 team in the state in Class 1A.  The team also made several Top 25 Preseason polls for the entire state and across all classes (including the Chicago Sun-Times Top 25).  The players and coaches are very excited for the upcoming season, and look forward to the opportunity to play more of a normal season this year, and glorify God with their actions on and off the court.  GO MUSTANGS!

GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM BEGINS INAUGURAL SEASON

After over a year of anticipation and Covid delays, the Yorkville Christian High School girls’ basketball team is ready for their inaugural season to begin.  The team, led by head coach, Tierney Burdett, and assistant coach, Danette Bulson, competed in the Reed Custer High School Thanksgiving tournament.  After a couple tough losses in the tournament, the team won their final game of the tournament in convincing fashion by defeating Gardner South Wilmington High School 68-20.  Senior, Felicity Allgood, was named to the All-Tournament Team.  The team has a nice mix of experience and youth and has been working very hard to get ready for the upcoming season.  The Yorkville Christian community is very excited to welcome Coach Burdett and ready to cheer on this team!  GO MUSTANGS and good luck the rest of the season!

WRESTLING PREPARES FOR AN EXCITING SEASON

The Mustangs were able to win 13 out of 16 dual meets last season (in just year three of the program) even with giving up 30-36 points per dual in forfeits.  The team will continue to test itself against the best in the state with a very tough schedule that includes tournaments and duals against some of the best 3A, 2A, and 1A competition.  The team will also take a trip north for the Cheeseland Invitational in January.

The Mustangs return five qualifiers from last year’s IWCOA state tournament (Isaac Bourge, Drew Torza, Tyler Martinez, Mike Esquivel, and Tyler Edwards).  Edwards was injured in preseason preparing for Super 32’s and will miss the 2021-22 season.  Martinez comes off a 3rd place IWCOA state finish and All-American achievement in Fargo during the summer, so big things are expected from Tyler.  Heavyweight Michael Esquivel captured 5th at state last year and returns for his senior year poised to climb the podium once again.  Isaac Bourge is a two-time state qualifier and will look to land on the podium in his senior campaign.  Drew Torza returns at the same weight he qualified for state at last season, so he should be a strong 152.  Jack Gillen and Noah Dial carried undefeated records into sectionals last season but missed making it to state, so they will have plenty of motivation and fire power to get to Champaign having spent the offseason training for the coming season.  Braulio Flores, a senior and previous IHSA qualifier in 2019-20 (1 match from medaling) returns to the mats after sitting his junior season and should make a deep run in the state tournament.

The lineup will be full most meets, which will help the team continue to be successful in head-to-head competitions.  Look for very good things from incoming freshman Aiden Larsen at 106.  Also, making their returns to the Mustang lineup from injuries a year ago, are juniors Jeremy Loomis and Chris Durbin (both sectional qualifiers as Freshman).  Both have been waiting patiently for a chance to get back to the grind and make a run toward state.  It should be a VERY exciting season!  GOOD LUCK MUSTANGS!

Wrestling Update

The wrestling team had a very successful first week of the season!  The team finished week one of the season with an overall dual record of 7-1.  The team defeated Willowbrook by a score of 48-28.  The team defeated Westmont (60-21) and St. Bede (74-6).  The team also wrestled in the DeRousse Invitational and won against the following teams — Providence Catholic (52-19), Lakes HS (70-12), Waukegan (72-12), Geneseo (54-21), and Deerfield (39-28).  Geneseo and Deerfield were ranked 2A teams, so those were big wins!  The team finished 4 out of 18 teams and had champions in the gold bracket in Tyler Martinez at 160 pounds and Michael Esquivel at 285 pounds.  Jack Gillen (170) and Aiden Larsen (106) placed 2nd in the gold bracket and Noah Dial (132) finished 4th.  Also qualifying for and placing in the gold bracket for the Mustangs was Tristan Gleason (126), Braulio Flores (138), Jeremy Loomis (145), and Drew Torza (152).  GREAT START MUSTANGS!

STUDENT COUNCIL HOSTS BONFIRE EVENT

On Wednesday, November 17, the Yorkville Christian High School, under the direction of Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook, hosted a bonfire event at the school.  The night featured great food, a DJ, games including bean bags, smores for dessert, and a great bonfire!  The students really enjoyed the event and had a great deal of fun.  Thank you to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook for all the hard work planning the event, but also the many parents who helped plan and organize the event, especially Mrs. Debbie Kraulidis, who served as the chairperson for the entire event.  Great job and thank you!

STUDENT COUNCIL HOSTS “SNOWCOMING” DANCE

The Yorkville Christian High School Student Council hosted a “Snowcoming” Dance on Friday, November 19.  Over 100 tickets were sold for the dance, and the night was a great success, as students danced the night away.  Special thanks to Mrs. Stewart and Mrs. Wiesbrook and the Student Council members for planning the event and making it happen.  Also, a special thanks to the many parent volunteers who spent many hours decorating the school to make the event a special night for our students.  Thank you!

BOYS BASKETBALL PROGRAM HOSTS “MEET THE MUSTANGS” NIGHT

The Yorkville Christian High School Boys Basketball program hosted “Meet the Mustangs” Night on Saturday. November 20.  The event started with a wonderful meal provided by Culvers of Yorkville.  Guests enjoyed cheeseburgers and chicken tenders.  After dinner, guests entered the Canyon to watch a series of scrimmages with the freshman, sophomore, and varsity teams.  It was a great opportunity for fans to meet all the members of each team and get a preview of how the teams look, as they prepare to start the season.  There were also contests such as a half court shot with the winner getting a year’s supply of Culvers custard, and a 3-point contest where each varsity basketball player was able to pick a fan to shoot with them.  There was also a silent auction for an autographed Derrick Rose jersey, and an autographed Khris Middleton jersey.  The night was a huge success with several hundred fans coming out to support the Mustangs!  It should be a fantastic season!
